‘Should be illegal' – Man Utd and Spurs fans face staying in £2000 Squid Game-like hostel for Europa League final

The Sun16-05-2025

A BILBAO hostel has been slammed for charging football fans over £2,000 - to stay in beds reminiscent of Netflix show Squid Game.
Manchester United and Tottenham fans are desperate for accommodation in the Spanish city ahead of the Europa League final.

The Prem sides are set to do battle at the Estadio de San Mamés next Wednesday.
But the Bilbao Metropolitan Hostel - just a nine-minute drive from the ground - has been accused of cashing in.
Disgruntled supporters have likened the bedroom set-up to the dorms in Squid Game, which became a global phenomenon in 2021.
Contestants are forced to sleep in a warehouse full of bunk beds in the South Korean show.
And fans were outraged to learn the price for a three-night stay in similar digs at the Bossh Hotels hostel.
Four adults would need to fork out a whopping £2,338 if they wanted to stay from Tuesday, May 20 to Friday, May 23, as reported by NeedToKnow.
Fans flocked to social media to complain about the hostel raising prices so dramatically ahead of Wednesday's showpiece.
One fan wrote in response: "Sleeping in Squid Game for £2,000."
Another joked: "You could win 45 billion Korean Won."
While a third added: "Should be illegal to take advantage like they are."
Bruno Fernandes matches Cristiano Ronaldo record as he wins Man Utd award - but admits he DOESN'T want it
And a fourth countered: 'Surely no one's paying £2,000 for a hostel. I wouldn't even pay £200. Would rather sleep in the airport."
Bossh Hotels has been approached for a comment.
Last week, it was revealed United are not going to be giving staff free tickets to the final.
Man Utd ratings vs West Ham as Ugarte awful and Mainoo invisible in latest horror show
MANCHESTER UNITED dropped to 16th in the Premier League after suffering an embarrassing 2-0 defeat to West Ham at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim named a strong team for United's return to domestic duty, but not even Amad Diallo could save the day.
United gave fans a lively start, but reverted back to factory settings after the visitors took the lead inside 27 minutes.
West Ham picked off United against the run of play, before former Man Utd star Aaron Wan-Bissaka came back to haunt his old club.
The full-back fed a clever ball through to Mohammed Kudus, who thrashed a low cross into the six yard box for Tomas Soucek to tap home.
United got caught cold again and were the masters of their own undoing, after Kudus pounced on Manuel Ugarte's mess up to set up Jarrod Bowen, who doubled West Ham's lead in the 58th minute.
Apart from some bright moments from Amad, this was another awful performance from the home side, as West Ham became the SIXTH team to the double over United this season.
The Red Devils haven't haven't won a Prem game since their 3-0 win at Leicester on March 16, which incidentally was the last team West Ham beat in February.
Both clubs have been allocated around 15,000 seats each by Uefa.
It's been reported that Spurs are offering all full-time employees a complimentary ticket for the match - a stance that United are not following.
The Mail claim that United are instead holding a ballot with a small number of tickets available for their staff, but will see the majority of workers go without the opportunity to watch the club in Spain.

Michael Owen reveals he didn't know what Ballon d'Or was when he won it and had to ask manager about it

MICHAEL OWEN has admitted he had no idea what the Ballon d'Or was - even after winning it. The former Liverpool striker won the prestigious gong in 2001, beating Real Madrid icon Raul into second place. 2 2 Owen played 297 times for the Reds over an eight-year stint, scoring 158 goals. He later moved to Real Madrid and Manchester United, as well as earning 89 caps for England. The 45-year-old's electric pace and lethal finishing made him one of the world's most feared strikers. Owen bagged 24 goals in 46 Premier League games in 2001, catching the eye of the Ballon d'Or panel. The award is handed out annually to Europe's best player. But after beating greats including David Beckham, Luis Figo and Thierry Henry to the award, Owen had absolutely no clue what it was. Owen told talkSPORT: "When Gerard Houllier phoned me and said 'You've won the Ballon d'Or', I'm like 'What's that gaffer'? "I didn't know what the award was. I never did because I never even knew what it was. "Back in those days it was never in our press." Owen was just the fourth English player to win the Ballon d'Or, following Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton and Kevin Keegan. But it wasn't until he became a Galactico with Madrid in 2004 that he truly understood its significance. Owen continued: "When I played for Real Madrid, it's like an MBE, it follows you. "Whenever they mention your name it's Ballon d'Or winner. "Abroad it is so big and it's only just cottoned on here for the last five or ten years. "It's so much bigger in other countries, in foreign countries. "It quickly sunk in how big it was."

Police respond after fan falls from stand and dies during Nations League final

Portugal won the Nations League final against Spain on penalties, but the game has been overshadowed by the tragic death of a supporter, who had fallen from a stand just before both the shootout began A fan died during the Nations League final between Spain and Portugal after falling from the second tier of a stand, it has been confirmed. Portugal won the showpiece in Munich on penalties on Sunday night but it emerged there had been a tragedy as the game moved into extra time. Medics and stewards cordoned off the area as they attended to the stricken supporter, who could not be revived. ‌ A statement from UEFA read: "There was a medical emergency at the Munich arena, and despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away at 00:06 (CET). Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time." ‌ Spain boss Luis de la Fuente made a point of sending condolences to the fan's family as he arrived for his post-match press conference. "Before we begin with the questions, I would like to express my condolences because a fan died in the stands today. My condolences to the family. That has made us realise what is important in life." Meanwhile, Portugal star Nuno Mendes also made a tribute to the fan after the game and said the passing made their triumph bittersweet. "I would like to express my condolences to the family of the fan that died," he said. "It casts a pall on our victory today." The game saw Arsenal target Martin Zubimendi open the scoring before Mendes equalised. Mikel Oyarzabal then put Spain back in front until Cristiano Ronaldo netted a equaliser - with the game going to extra time and penalties. ‌ After Portugal won the shootout 5-3, Ronaldo was reduced to tears after winning yet another trophy in his storied career - having been forced to watch extra time from the bench following an injury. The Al-Nassr forward said after the game: "I had been feeling [the injury] for some time, but for the national team, if I had to break my leg, I would have broken it. It's for a trophy, I had to play and I gave it my all. "Winning for Portugal is always special. I have many titles with clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal. It's tears. It's duty done and a lot of joy. When you talk about Portugal it is always a special feeling. Winning a title is always the pinnacle in a national team." Portugal boss Roberto Martines said: "We don't just have a team; we have 16-17 players on the same level, and, as a coach, I have many options and can change concepts. It's a different team to when I started; we have more character and confidence." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. James Argent's ex Nicoline Artursson returns to social media after 800 word statement slamming Towie star

NICOLINE Artursson has returned to social media with a heartfelt tribute to her father days after breaking her silence on ex-boyfriend James Argent's brutal assault. The post comes shortly after Nicoline released a bombshell statement revealing shocking details about Argent's attack on her. 3 3 The former Miss Sweden shared a photo of her parents who have been supporting her since the attack. She celebrated dad Stephan's birthday with a sweet tribute, thanking her mum and dad for being her "role models". Stephan beamed in the photo, wearing a crisp white suit with a printed shirt underneath, as her mum Pernille looked glamorous in a multi-coloured dress. The couple each held a glass of wine and flashed bright smiles, looking every bit the picture of love. Nicoline appeared to make a dig at Argent, 37, as she showered praise on her dad, saying he has been an incredible partner to her mum. Nicoline wrote over the photo: "My biggest role models. Married for 28 years. "Not only are you a heck of a businessman, a 9-times Iron Man, World Tour Swim-Runner, an incredible husband to mom etc etc… Yes the list goes on. "You are truly the best dad anyone could ever dream of and we are so blessed to have you, our Super-Hero! "Happy Birthday daddy cool, we love you." The warm tribute to her father comes after the emotional turmoil Nicoline revealed days earlier. James Argent Receives Suspended Sentence After Assault on Girlfriend in Spain Former Towie star Argent turned on model Nicoline, 32, while they were at their home in Spain last month. He was arrested and spent several hours in police cells before admitting a charge of domestic violence in court. Now Nicoline has spoken out in a statement - confessing: 'My fractures on my body have finally healed but I'm wounded inside.' Recalling the traumatic experience, she said: 'I was brutally thrown out of our new home in the middle of the night wearing only my pyjamas. My clothes and belongings were being thrown out from the balcony down on me. I was injured.' Nicoline also placed the blame for Argent's violence with constant clashes over his ex-girlfriend Lydia Bright. Shortly before the attack, she posted a story questioning whether it was acceptable for someone to remain close to their ex while in a new relationship. And Nicoline claimed she and Argent often clashed over Lydia's involvement in their romance. She said: "I felt there were too many people in our relationship: me, my boyfriend and his ex. 'Three's a crowd', they say. "I asked so many times if we could be just the two of us, but the answer was a strong NO. "I experienced what I can only describe as targeted emotional distress which he allowed to continue.' Nicoline continued: "After being together for one year my boyfriend finally promised me that he would have boundaries. "He would put a stop to all that had been going on for months. "But he didn't. Instead he broke the promise and her controlling behaviour continued. The rest is history." Nicoline went on to thank the people who came to her aid and added: " have tried to understand why. "I have cried so many tears thinking about the way he chose to hurt me. He said he loved me and I believed him and here we are. "There is now a legal record of what happened. Violence has no excuse - no matter how much love preceded it." Argent was handed a six month suspended sentence and a two-year restraining order banning him from contacting Nicoline. He has only spoken once since The Sun revealed the attack on Nicoline and said: "I haven't relapsed. "I am still three years and four months clean and sober. "I am devastated by what's happened." Nicoline Artursson's statement in full It's now been a month. I still can't believe it. My fractures on my body have finally healed but I'm wounded inside. I've been quiet long enough. Silence protects no one - and it almost destroyed me. What started as a love story sadly turned into something else. Behind the pictures, promises and the plans for a life together - the beautiful days - changed into something into sadness with emotional manipulation and eventually physical harm. I loved deeply, believed in our future and stood by someone I thought would protect me and instead I was left alone and harmed in ways I never imagined. I was not only failed by him but deeply affected by the presence of unresolved ties to his past. Yes I posted an Instagram story with a simple yes or no question about if your ex should be a part of your present relationship. I felt there were too many people in our relationship: me, my boyfriend and his ex. 'Three's a crowd', they say. I asked so many times if we could be just the two of us, but the answer was a strong NO. I experienced what I can only describe as targeted emotional distress which he allowed to continue. The ex and her family put us through so much misery and false accusations, I won't go into details. They had no reason whatsoever to do what they did to us, but for some reason they wouldn't let go and let us enjoy our love. Everybody knows that real friends support you and want to see you happy. So I posted a story on Instagram. After being together for one year my boyfriend finally promised me that he would have boundaries. He would put a stop to all that had been going on for months. But he didn't. Instead he broke the promise and her controlling behaviour continued. The rest is history. I was brutally thrown out of our new home in the middle of the night wearing only my pyjamas. I opened the door to let him in and only minutes after I found myself laying down on the stairs outside our house. My clothes and belongings were being thrown out from the balcony down on me. I was injured. Thanks to incredible neighbours who heard and saw what happened and acted, I got help. They called police, brought me to safety and ensured the incident was taken seriously. A gentleman does not abuse you and end up in jail and call you the love of his life. A gentleman does not blame you for his actions. A gentleman will confide in his partner, family and close circle of friends, keeping them close and safe. A gentleman chooses you always and leaves the past in the past - including exes. Life is to be lived together and not to please people who want to take advantage of you. At the end of the day, fame can only do so much - it's all about being strong and growing together. Life is simply not a reality TV show, life is real. I have tried to understand why. I have cried so many tears thinking about the way he chose to hurt me. He said he loved me and I believed him and here we are. There is now a legal record of what happened. Violence has no excuse - no matter how much love preceded it. To those who questioned me for staying as long as I did: I stayed because I believed in love. I believed he and we could grow, could heal, could choose peace. But love doesn't survive in chaos. And it cannot survive where violence lives. To every woman reading this: if you've ever questioned your worth, your safety or your sanity in a relationship - this is your sign. You deserved to be loved with care and integrity. And you are not alone. To the men: real strength is protection. Real love is safe. Be the kind of man who lifts women up - not one who breaks them down, neither by violence or silence. To the future: never say never. I will get the little family I've always dreamed of and have my dream wedding to symbolise and celebrate true love in front of my dear family and friends. I'm healing now. Slowly, bravely and unapologetically. I will rise and I will use my voice - not for vengeance but for truth. For every woman who's been silenced by someone who said 'I love you' and then proved otherwise. This is not just my story. It's a reminder: abuse - whether emotional, psychological or physical - has no place in love.
