Google Unveils Android XR Platform and Smart Glasses Powered by Gemini AI

Google has revealed the next phase of its AI evolution with the introduction of Android XR, a platform designed to power a new wave of immersive devices including headsets and smart glasses. Built for the Gemini era, Android XR integrates Google's AI assistant directly into wearable technology, allowing users to interact hands-free with devices that understand their surroundings and respond in real time.
Android XR aims to redefine how users interact with technology by offering a perspective-aware AI assistant. With Gemini at its core, the assistant can see and hear through the devices, enabling contextually intelligent responses and proactive help. This innovation promises seamless integration of virtual and real-world experiences, starting with headsets like Samsung's upcoming Project Moohan, which delivers immersive content on an infinite screen. Gemini enhances these experiences by interpreting what the user sees and offering relevant actions.
During the Google I/O keynote, the company also showcased Android XR smart glasses. Equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers, the glasses sync with a user's phone to provide access to apps and real-time information. An optional in-lens display delivers private updates and notifications. Demonstrations included live messaging, photo capture, appointment scheduling, and live language translation—effectively turning real-world conversations into subtitled experiences.
To make smart glasses more appealing for daily wear, Google announced collaborations with fashion-forward eyewear brands like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, with more partners like Kering Eyewear expected in the future. In parallel, Google is expanding its partnership with Samsung to create a full-stack platform for Android XR glasses, including software and reference hardware. Developers will be able to start building for this ecosystem later this year, as Google pushes the boundaries of contextual AI and wearable technology.

Google Deepmind CEO says global AI cooperation 'difficult'

3 June 2025 17:53 LONDON (AFP)Artificial intelligence pioneer and head of Google's Deepmind, Demis Hassabis on Monday said that greater international cooperation around AI regulation was needed but "difficult" to achieve "in today's geopolitical context".At a time when AI is being integrated across all industries, its uses have raised major ethical questions, from the spread of misinformation to its impact on employment, or the loss of technological London's South by Southwest (SXSW) festival on Monday, Hassabis, who has won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on AI, also addressed the challenges that artificial general intelligence (AGI) -- a technology that could match and even surpass human capability -- would bring. "The most important thing is it's got to be some form of international cooperation because the technology is across all borders. It's going to get applied to all countries," Hassabis said. "Many, many countries are involved in researching or building data centres or hosting these technologies. So I think for anything to be meaningful, there has to be some sort of international cooperation or collaboration and unfortunately that's looking quite difficult in today's geopolitical context," he Paris's AI summit in February, 58 countries -- including China, France, India, the European Union and the African Union Commission -- called for enhanced coordination on AI the US warned against "excessive regulation", with US Vice President JD Vance saying it could "kill a transformative sector".Alongside the US, the UK refused to sign the summit's appeal for an "open", "inclusive" and "ethical" AI. Hassabis on Monday advocated for the implementation of "smart, adaptable regulation" because "it needs to kind of adapt to where the technology ends up going and what the problems end up being".

NotebookLM Audio Overviews now available in Arabic

Google is launching Audio Overviews on NotebookLM in more than 50 languages including Arabic, starting this week. Audio Overviews , which turn uploaded sources into engaging, podcast-like conversations, were launched late last year in English. With Gemini's native audio support, people can now use Audio Overviews in their preferred language, and more updates will come to the feature based on users' feedback. Audio Overviews are generated in the preferred language of the user's account. This update also introduces a new 'Output Language' option in NotebookLM's settings. People can change the language at any time, making it easy to create multilingual content or study materials as needed. For example, a teacher preparing a lesson on – climate change in the region can share resources in various languages — like an Arabic documentary, an English research paper and Spanish study reports — with students. The students can upload these and can generate an Audio Overview of key insights in their preferred language. This capability breaks down language barriers and makes the information more accessible to everyone.
