US charges Americans over role in botched Congo coup

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Justice has charged four Americans for their role in an attempted coup in the Democratic Republic of Congo after three of the men were returned to U.S. custody this week, according to a criminal complaint unsealed on Wednesday.
Marcel Malanga, Tyler Thompson and Benjamin Zalman-Polun were convicted in the DRC over the botched May 2024 coup, in which armed men targeted the homes of top officials and briefly occupied the office of the presidency in the capital Kinshasa.
They were released on Tuesday in a deal finalized during a visit to Kinshasa by President Donald Trump's senior Africa adviser, Massad Boulos.
A fourth man, Joseph Peter Moesser, 67, an alleged bombmaker, was arrested in the U.S. state of Utah, the Department of Justice said in a press release.
The four face charges including conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction and bomb government facilities and conspiracy to kill or kidnap persons in a foreign country, the press release said.
"The defendants planned, scouted out targets, and identified victims for the Armed Coup Attack, with the purpose and intent to murder other persons, including high-level DRC government officials," it said. "They recruited others to join in the Armed Coup Attack as personnel for the rebel army and, in some cases, recruited personnel in exchange for money."
Malanga, Thompson and Zalman-Polun were among 37 people found guilty of criminal conspiracy, terrorism and other charges by a Congolese military court in September and sentenced to death over the coup attempt.
The deal for the three men's release comes as Washington is negotiating with Congo's president, Felix Tshisekedi, over potential minerals investments.
The three men denied any wrongdoing and unsuccessfully appealed against the verdict, before Tshisekedi last week commuted their sentences to life in prison before handing them over to U.S. authorities.

Trump's family has a new business venture: a gold-colored $499 smartphone

The Trump family is getting into the mobile phone business. On the 10th anniversary of President Donald Trump 's formal unveiling of his 2016 presidential campaign, his eldest sons made another announcement in Trump Tower: a Trump-branded mobile phone service, including a gold-colored smartphone that is set to be available later this fall. "We've partnered with some of the greatest people in the industry to make sure real Americans can get true value from their mobile carriers," Donald Trump Jr. said Monday morning at the press conference. The new venture is the latest example of how Trump and his family are finding new ways to cash in while Trump serves his second term. The Trump Organization touted Monday's unveiling as a "major announcement." Like many of the Trump-related business ventures, Trump Mobile has a licensing agreement that allows it to use the president's name. According to its website, Trump Mobile will offer a "47 plan," which includes unlimited talk, texting, and data for $47.45 a month. The first 20GB of data will be at high speed. Trump, of course, is the 47th president and also served as the 45th. Most interestingly, Donald Trump Jr. said that the company would manufacture its smartphone in the United States. Apple and other major tech companies have manufactured their phones outside the US due to labor costs. Trump and the White House have threatened to impose tariffs on those companies if they don't bring back more manufacturing to the US. The T1 Phone, according to the site, will cost $499. Interested consumers can preorder the phone now. The website shows that the phone is gold colored throughout and has "T1" and an American stamp on the back. The promotional image says, "Make America Great Again," Trump's trademarked political slogan.

Speaker Mike Johnson postpones Israel visit to address parliament amid Iran conflict

Washington — House Speaker Mike Johnson is postponing his trip to Israel, where he had planned to address Israel's parliament in Jerusalem later this month, amid open warfare between Israel and Iran. "Due to the complex situation currently unfolding in Iran and Israel, Speaker Ohana and I have made the decision to postpone the special session of the Knesset," Johnson said in a statement Monday. "We look forward to rescheduling the address in the near future and send our prayers to the people of Israel and the Middle East." Johnson announced last week that he would make the trip on June 22. It would have been one of a small number of trips he's taken since becoming speaker. Johnson's speakership began weeks later, after the ouster of his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy addressed the Israeli parliament, known as the Knesset, during his speakership in May 2023. Johnson met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington in February. The speaker said when he announced plans for his trip last week that "Israel must know that when America said, 'Never Again,' we meant it," calling it "our moral imperative to stand by our sister democracy." The U.S. State Department on Monday raised its travel advisory for Israel to the highest level, Level 4, and warned Americans not to travel there due to "armed conflict, terrorism and civil unrest." "The security situation in Israel, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem is unpredictable, and U.S. citizens are reminded to remain vigilant and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness as security incidents, including mortar and rocket fire and armed UAV intrusions and missiles, can take place without warning," the State Department said.
