Three nights in hospital and a ligament tear. But don't tell these Blues they'll miss Origin decider
Jarome Luai spent three nights in hospital last week to treat a staph infection, and Brian To'o suffered a grade-two lateral ligament tear in his left knee last Thursday night, but the Blues are confident both will play in the State of Origin series decider in Sydney on July 9.
To'o's injury will prevent him from stretching out fully with NSW until the weekend at the earliest.
Prop Payne Haas also remained in Brisbane to undergo regular treatment on his lower back and did not arrive in camp until Monday night, while Nathan Cleary confirmed his groin is fine, but he is unlikely to kick goals at Accor Stadium next week.
Luai missed Wests Tigers' Friday night clash because of an infection, and revealed how a planned short hospital stay turned into three nights.
'I had a staph infection,' Luai said. 'I didn't think much of it at the time, and thought I'd be right for Friday's game [against Manly], but I woke up the morning of the captain's run, something wasn't right, and I ended up in hospital.
'Where the wound was, it was pretty red, and it didn't feel right. It was on the chest, but then it spread.
'We play injured, we play sick, but once the doctors tell you it's worse than what you think, I had to put my ego and pride aside and look after my body. Our health is our wealth.
'I could have got out Saturday, but to make sure it was fully gone, I stayed an extra night.

The Wests Tigers have been heavily criticised for their inability to retain talented young players following the departure of back-up hooker Tallyn Da Silva to Parramatta. Da Silva had been contracted at the Tigers until the end of 2026, but like Lachlan Galvin, the 20-year-old has left the Tigers with 18 months left on his deal. On Monday the Eels confirmed they had signed Da Silva effective immediately until the end of the 2029 season in a coup for coach Jason Ryles as he rebuilds Parramatta's roster. Da Silva's departure is the latest blow for the Tigers, who sit 14th on the NRL ladder and are desperate to avoid a fourth wooden spoon in a row. On NRL 360, veteran reporter Phil Rothfield said the list of promising young players to leave the Tigers was a damning indictment on the club. 'I'll name some players,' Rothfield said. 'Galvin, Da Silva, (Stefano) Utoikamanu, Shawn Blore, there was a schoolboy there — Onitoni Large. 'He broke his contract to get out of that club. Why have five outstanding young players in the last 12 months, all wanted out of the Wests Tigers? Five outstanding young footballers have walked out of their club. 'Have they given up on this season? What happens if Api gets hurt? Their two best youngsters have left that club. 'I have spoken to a lot of very good judges in the game who rate him very highly. 'They were assured by Tallyn Da Silva and his parents that Tallyn wanted to stay at the club, but if Api re-signed, he would leave. 'He's happy prepared to buy into that system. 'How many hookers do the Broncos have? Are any of them lining up to get out now? Read hit back: 'Corey Paix doesn't have a contract for next year, so some of them are going.' Why one week makes all the difference to history's most successful halves combo
Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai will treasure an extra week training together in NSW Origin camp ahead of next Wednesday's series decider – and use it to ensure they don't fall into old Penrith habits. Luai's call-up to replace the injured Mitchell Moses for Origin II reunited the most successful halves pairing in modern rugby league history for the Blues, but Cleary's pre-game groin injury hampered their dynamic as Queensland held on for a famous win. Luai has also been dealing with a medical problem, spending three nights in hospital last week as he recovered from an infection, but he expects to take part in NSW's four scheduled training sessions before Origin III. Former Blues coach Brad Fittler noted in commentary for Channel Nine that Luai's 'frantic play' had impacted NSW's structure in a first half riddled with errors and penalties as the Blues slumped to a 26-6 half-time deficit. Luai was one of the Blues' best as he recovered from multiple first-half mistakes to set up two tries in their comeback. The Tigers skipper revealed he had become mindful of not trying to replicate the Panthers game plan when playing for NSW. 'It's definitely different now I'm not at Penrith, and we do lean on that connection of playing together for so long,' Luai said on Monday. 'But you have to strip away the titles and all those games we've played together to focus on what we're here to do, beat Queensland. We've had a lot of success together, but it doesn't really mean anything now come game time and in the past I've probably tried to rely on the club combination too much. 'But you can't do that; you're playing against the best players in the world, so you have to make the most of every single day preparing in this camp. You can't leave anything to chance.'
