'Hes a big match player': Keshav Maharaj hails Aiden Markrams knock in WTC final against Australia

London [UK], June 14 (ANI): South Africa's left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj called opener Aiden Markram a "big-match player" as the latter scored a century during his outing in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 against Australia at the Home of Cricket, Lord's in London on Friday.
Markram (102* runs off 159 balls) scripted history by becoming the first Proteas batter to score a hundred in an ICC tournament final.
He also became the fourth batter after Jacques Kallis (113* against Sri Lanka in the 1998 ICC Knockout semifinal against SL), Herschelle Gibbs (116* against India in CT 2002 semifinals), and David Miller (101 against Australia in the World Cup 2023 semifinal) to hit a century for SA in ICC knockout matches.
Speaking at ICC Digital after Day 3, Maharaj said, "I saw a different sort of desire and focus in Aiden's eyes today when he came off the field (prior to batting) as I think he wanted to rectify the mistake that he made in the first innings."
"Kudos to him to put that into place. He's a big match player and big players rise up to the moment and rectify their mistakes very quickly. There's no better fitting moment for him to get a Test hundred here at Lord's in a final against probably a team that I don't think they've ever lost a final," the Proteas cricketer added.
Maharaj also paid tribute to captain Temba Bavuma (65* runs from 121 balls), after his captain showed enormous determination to battle a hamstring injury and played a vital role in the unbeaten stand of 143 that has South Africa close to victory.
"He had a little bit of a niggle, but the warrior and fighter that he is was there with Aidan to support it. It was amazing to hear how they complemented each other when they came off at the tea break, just hearing about how they're going to go about their business and understanding that obviously Temba can't run at full tilt, but Aiden embraced that," the 35-year-old player concluded. FIH Hockey Pro League: Australia bounce back to win 3-2 against India
Antwerp [Belgium], June 14 (ANI): Australia staged a strong comeback from a two-goal deficit to defeat India 3-2 in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 match held in Antwerp on Saturday, delivering another heartbreaking result for the Indian side. Following four successive narrow losses in the European leg, the Indian men's hockey team, sans their captain Harmanpreet Singh, had a dream start against Australia until they floundered with a lead in the final quarter, allowing their opponents to come back. It was goals by Nathan Ephraums (42'), Joel Rintala (56') and Tom Craig (60') that put Australia ahead, while Abhishek (8', 35') scored a double for India, as per a Hockey India press release. It was an entertaining opening quarter with India taking the lead as early as the 8th minute of the game. The initial few minutes saw both teams trade chances in the circles until a perfect pass from the midfield by Manpreet Singh, who is on 399 international caps, to Abhishek positioned at the top of the circle fetched India a crucial 1-0 lead. Abhishek did well in beating the defender to find the net. Only two minutes later, Australia threatened to equalise when James Collins won Australia's first penalty corner with some clever work in the circle, finding the Indian defender's foot. But Suraj Karkera has shown great promise in this tournament, standing firm in the post, and made a brilliant stop with his foot. He was kept busy in the following minutes as the Australian attack raided the circle with multiple chances, but the Mumbai lad was up to the task. India was cautious in the second quarter. It did well to defend the 1-0 lead and also came close to doubling it when experienced Mandeep Singh set up Manpreet at the goalmouth with a quick-fire cross pass, but Manpreet couldn't quite get the right deflection. Though Australia turned the tables on India in the third quarter, pushing for that elusive first goal, India doubled the lead in the 35th minute, thanks to the handy work of Sukhjeet Singh, who made a clever assist to Abhishek. Adding a double to his name in this match, Abhishek made no mistake in pumping it past the Australian goalie Ashleigh Thomas. Australia eventually did find an opportunity to score through Nathan Ephraums with a fine assist by Tom Craig. The final quarter was nervy for Indian hockey fans with Australia mustering back-to-back PCs, but Suraj Karkera was on top of his game to keep Australia at bay. With a little over five minutes left for the final hooter, Australia won another PC and this time, they equalised with Joel Rintala's conversion. They extended the lead in the 60th minute with another PC well-struck by Tom Craig, handing India another heartbreaking loss on the trot. (ANI)

"It's important for all of us to get this game time": Prasidh Krishna on playing intra-squad game
Beckenham [UK], June 14 (ANI): Ahead of India's Test series against England, right-arm seamer Prasidh Krishna featured in the intra-squad game between India and India A and explained the importance of the game for the players. Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill and KL Rahul were among the runs while Shardul Thakur delivered a solid performance with the ball on Day 1 of the intra-squad match between the Indian senior side and India A at Beckenham on Friday. Speaking about the intra-squad game between India and India A in a video posted by BCCI, Prasidh Krishna said, 'I think it's really important for all of us to get this game time, because some of them are coming from the A game. Getting some time on feet is really important. That's what's going about today as well. Looks like a good, nice hard pitch. 'Bowlers have been in the game all throughout, have been bowling some really good spells. Batters are also showing some character. So it's always good when you're competing against each other as well. All of us are excited and enjoying what's happening. All of us are getting together after a while. So a lot of memories, a lot of cricket,' the fast bowler added. KL Rahul had also slammed scores of 116 and 51 during the second unofficial Test against England Lions at Northampton. Gill, who has a poor average of 14.66 in England and has scored just 88 runs in six innings across three matches here with a best score of 28, will take plenty of confidence from his knock. Thakur, who scored knocks of 27 (in first unofficial Test) and 19 and 34 (in the second unofficial Test) against England Lions and also took two wickets against them, also got some valuable game time as he battles a young Nitish Kumar Reddy for the spot of a pace-bowling all-rounder in the team. India's first Test against England at Leeds from June 20 will mark the start of a new era under newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill, as he aims to lead a new-look team to glory following the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Tests and Ravichandran Ashwin from international cricket. The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester.
