Veteran actor Mumtaz, SRK's first crush, says no to playing his mother in films

India Today02-05-2025

Veteran actor Mumtaz has declined the idea of playing Shah Rukh Khan's mother on screen, stating her strict criteria for accepting roles. The actor, who ruled the silver screen in the 60s and '70s, shared her thoughts on age-appropriate roles and her current approach to selecting scripts.Speaking to journalist Vickey Lalwani, Mumtaz said, 'I will only play a mother to an actor who is 20 years younger than me, and only if I look good on screen." Married at a young age and now selective about her roles, Mumtaz added that appearance remains one of the main factor in any project she considers.advertisementInterestingly, Shah Rukh Khan, has previously confessed to having a major crush on Mumtaz. At a press event in 2011, he revealed, 'My first two crushes have been Mumtaz ji and Saira ji. Now I address them with a 'ji'. I always felt that they were the most beautiful ladies in the world.'
When reminded of SRK's comment, Mumtaz acknowledged it warmly, though she believed he may have said it 'in a playful manner.' Still, when asked if she would ever consider playing his mother in a film, her response was clear: 'No.'Pressed further about veteran actors like Jaya Bachchan having already played maternal roles with leading stars, Mumtaz replied firmly, 'That's Jaya's decision.'She added, "Tell Shah Rukh I'll work with him if I can look like I actually do. But he'll say no. Why should I have grey hair? He's very intelligent, very smart, and a lovely person. Just because he likes me doesn't mean he'd cast me if I don't look the part."advertisementThe actor also shared her interest in Hollywood icon Jane Fonda's role in Monster-in-Law, noting how Fonda's character retained her style and agency. "Her character didn't want to accept a girl who was 'gareeb' (poor). She had the freedom to look and dress the way she wanted. That's something I'd like too," she added.Mumtaz was last seen in the film 'Aandhiyan' in 1990. The film also starred Shatrughan Sinha, Prosenjit Chatterjee and Madhushree. Must Watch

Is Shah Rukh Khan's Swades Based On '90s Serial Yule Love Story? Read On

New Delhi: Shah Rukh Khan's 2004 film Swades received widespread critical acclaim for its nuanced performances and thought-provoking plot. But do you know that the Ashutosh Gowarikar directorial is based on a '90s serial titled Yule Love Stories? Yule Love Stories was an anthology series where new episodes were shown every day. In one such episode called Vapasi, Ashutosh Gowariker himself played the role of Mohan, the name of Shah Rukh Khan's character in Swades. Much like in Swades, Vapasai centered around Mohan, an NRI, who returned to India for his beloved Kaveri amma. There, he fell in love with a woman named Geeta. A X user has now shared a clip of that episode, where the similarities between Swades and Vapasi are hard to miss. The caption read, "Hardly anyone knows SRK lowkey lifted Swades from a '90s Zee TV episode. Bro really made a movie outta a TV serial and you all out here calling it a masterpiece. Aamir told Zoom, 'I found it very boring! I had said this to Ashu when he narrated the whole story to me. In fact, I'll tell you; Ashu narrated the story to me when we were making Lagaan. It was titled Kaveri Amma then. That's what he told me.' He added, 'It was a three-hour-long narration. When he asked me how I liked it, I said I want to tell you my first reaction first. I said, 'I got bored. It's important for you to hear this reaction.' Meanwhile, Aamir Khan will be next seen in Sitaare Zameer Par. The film also marks Genelia D'Souza's Bollywood comeback.
