US envoy says France can ‘carve' Palestinian state out of Riviera

JERUSALEM : The US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has lashed out at France's advocacy for recognition of a Palestinian state, saying that if it supported such an outcome it could 'carve out a piece of the French Riviera' and create one.
France is co-chairing with Saudi Arabia this month an international conference at the United Nations aimed at resurrecting the idea of a two-state solution, which the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes.
Paris has also said it could recognise a Palestinian state itself this year.
In an interview with Fox News published on Saturday, Huckabee called the initiative at the UN 'incredibly inappropriate when Israel is in the midst of a war'.
'Oct 7 changed a lot of things,' he said, referring to the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza.
'If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I've got a suggestion for them – carve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state. They are welcome to do that, but they are not welcome to impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation.'
Israel on Friday accused French President Emmanuel Macron of undertaking a 'crusade against the Jewish state' after he called for European countries to harden their stance on Israel if the humanitarian situation in Gaza did not improve.
The day before, Israel announced the creation of 22 new settlements in the West Bank, with defence minister Israel Katz later vowing to build a 'Jewish Israeli state' in the occupied territory.
The settlements are regularly condemned by the United Nations as illegal under international law, and are seen as a major obstacle to the two-state solution.
But Huckabee, a staunch advocate for Israel, has said there is 'no such thing as an occupation' when it comes to the Palestinian territories.

With her husband, French tennis player Gael Monfils, watching from the stands, Svitolina ignited hope among the crowd when she moved 5-4 up in the second set. Three unforced forehand errors in the next game, however, proved too many and Swiatek raced through the next three games to seal victory, firing three aces in the final game including one on match point.

Cop to go on trial for murder of Nahel M

(AFP pic) PARIS : A French police officer charged with murder in the deadly shooting of a teenager in 2023 that sparked violent protests across the country will go on trial next year, the Nanterre prosecutor's office said on Tuesday. In March, prosecutors requested that one of two officers investigated over the June 27 shooting of 17-year-old Nahel M in the Paris suburb of Nanterre be put on trial. A charge of complicity in murder against the other officer was dropped. Investigating judges on Tuesday decided the trial of the officer, identified as Florian M, should take place in the Assize Court of the Hauts-de-Seine. Depending on whether there are appeals, the trial could take place in the second or the third quarter 2026, the statement from the Nanterre prosecutor's office said. Neither the policeman's lawyer, nor the lawyer for Nahel's family could be immediately reached for comment. The police officer fired at Nahel after the latter failed to comply with an order to stop his car. The boy, of North African descent, later died from his wounds. A video shared on social media, verified by Reuters, showed two police officers beside the car, a Mercedes-AMG, with one firing his weapon as the driver pulled away. Nahel's death and the video were shared on social media, drawing widespread anger and provoking several nights of unrest in Nanterre and other cities across France.

Top seed Sabalenka battles past Zheng to reach French Open semis

(AP pic) PARIS : World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka ended Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen's winning streak on the Paris clay with a straight-sets victory today to seal herself a spot in the French Open semi-finals. The top seed from Belarus won through 7-6(7/3), 6-3 against the Chinese eighth seed in just under two hours on Court Philippe Chatrier. She next plays either three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland or Ukraine's Elina Svitolina for a place in the final. The 27-year-old fought back after struggling in the first set against Zheng, who had beaten her in the last eight on clay in Rome last month, extending her record against the Chinese player to 7-1. 'The last tournament I was pretty exhausted,' said Sabalenka. 'Today I was more fresh I was ready to battle, to fight and give everything. 'Honestly, I was actually glad that I lost that match because I needed a little break before Roland Garros.' Today, Sabalenka once again got the upper hand over Zheng, who had been on a winning streak of 10 matches on the Paris clay after her run to Olympic gold last year. Zheng broke and led 4-2 in the first set. But numerous unforced errors – 31 in total – allowed the Belarusian to come back. The second set was also tight before Sabalenka broke back to lead 4-3, taking advantage of her opponent's errors. 'True battle' Sabalenka converted her first match point on a poorly-controlled drop-shot from Zheng to reach her seventh semi-final of the season. 'That was a true battle.
