Elon Musk Once Again Admits Most Teslas Physically Can't 'Self Drive' Without Another Hardware Upgrade

Elon Musk famously thought that automating the entirety of driving would be a pretty easy job, and he's been steadily and continually surprised when it turns out to actually be difficult. This trend carries over to the tech installed in Tesla's cars, which has required update after update, each time accompanied by Musk saying that this one, totally, is the one that'll solve autonomy. Now, we're seeing it again: Tesla's now-outdated HW3 hardware can't handle autonomy, and only the new HW4 cars can.
If this story sounds familiar, it's because the same thing happened back when Tesla introduced the HW3 kit. The company had sold its 'Full Self-Driving' software to owners with older HW2.5 cars, then had to upgrade them to HW3 at dealers. According to The Verge, that's the plan this time too:
'The truth is that we're gonna have to upgrade people's Hardware 3 computer for those who have bought Full Self Driving, and that is the honest answer,' Musk said during yesterday's earnings call, adding that it will be 'absolutely painful and difficult.'

Although millions of Tesla vehicles on the road have HW3 installed, only FSD purchasers will get whatever upgrade Musk is now promising. 'I'm kind of glad that not that many people bought the FSD package,' Musk quipped. It remains unclear if Tesla will now engineer a new retrofit upgrade. (Musk previously said they wouldn't.)
This means that if you purchased the FSD package on a HW2.5 car — back when Tesla promised you that doing so would allow your car to drive itself — your dealer upgrade still isn't enough, and you'll have to go through the whole rigamarole again. This time, though, things may be far tougher than upgrading to HW3. The HW4 computer's form factor is different from HW3, meaning there's no simple plug and play upgrade. And don't forget that FSD in its current form is just a Level 2 hands-free system that still requires the driver to pay attention and be in control — it's not actually 'self driving.'
It should be clear by now that Musk and Tesla continually promise features that simply aren't possible, reap the stock benefits, then quietly shuffle things around later to keep sycophant customers happy. This time, though, the hardware will totally work out just like the company says. Right?

Tesla faces robotaxi hurdles while Waymo keeps expanding

Tesla's (TSLA) robotaxi launch hit some early roadblocks with speed and traffic violations reported during tests in Texas, while Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Waymo expands its service to Atlanta. The start of Tesla's robotaxi tests apparently didn't go as smoothly perhaps as the company touted. Yal Finanz Prize Submarine is here with that story, Prize. Yeah, we're just showing that the Hollywood set where they did the actual presentation last October didn't go exactly as planned. We saw a lot of the Tesla stands excited about taking their robotaxis right. But there were some hiccups, right? We saw some of the videos that they were taking some of the vehicles were speeding above post speed limits. And then most egregiously, there was an incident where a car, you see right here, attempted to turn left, didn't actually do that, and went straight through a left hand turn only lane, and then crossed a double yellow, as you see here, which is also a traffic violation, a major one actually in Texas. So Nizza says that they're aware of these incidents, and they're monitoring them, and that they'll take necessary actions to protect road safety. So Nizza is kind of possibly getting involved here. Meanwhile, Waymo entering Atlanta, like they said they're officially up open for business with partnering with Uber as their sort of platform partner. So you know, Waymo's with Uber in Atlanta, and also Austin, where Tesla's tests is taking place. And then also they're in LA, San Francisco, um, and places like that. Do you think, Prize, you you hear about something like this, does it in any way, could it in any way slow down, disrupt the expansion of this service across the country? You mean these little hiccups here? Yeah. I, it kind of brings a little bit of the enthusiasm down, but it's not ready for prime time, right? They have the safety drivers, riders sitting in the passenger seat, you have teleoperators who are remotely watching the car. You know, a lot of Tesla investors are excited about the fact that this test actually started, it's happening. But they have a long way to go to catch up to Waymo, which is doing 250,000 completed robotaxi trips a week without sort of these incidents that we're seeing right now in Tesla. All right, let's bring in our ensemble now for more on the ride shares today. Tesla, got a Google, Uber, Lyft, they're all in focus. Julie, you know, I, Tesla did slip a bit today, of course they had a nice pop yesterday. Though, as Prize rightfully points out, as Musk begins this journey here, he's got some big competition, including Waymo. Yeah, I mean, and if if there are these hiccups, I mean, as we know, federal regulators have sort of left it up to states and municipalities, whether they're even going to allow these things to go forward. You see it going forward on a city by city basis, right? So even though Tesla is still proceeding with its tests in Austin, if it continues to see, I mean, like, we're calling it a hiccup, but, you know, it could have been a lot worse, right? So the question is, how is Tesla addressing these issues? And then the next question is, when Tesla goes to apply for its next approval in its next city, is this going to inform that? Is this going to then cause some friction with letting that move forward? Now, we always know if we're on an Elon Musk timeline, you can't necessarily expect things to happen as he thinks or says that they will. Um, but this is just one more thing to consider when we're talking about that sort of speed to market, and then capturing that market share. Chris, I want to bring you here as well, as the one person on the panel who actually has a portfolio to run here. What do you make of this big fight? I got Tesla, Waymo, got Amazon in there, Uber, Lyft. Yeah, it's kind of a crowded space. Uh, you know, and it's kind of an emerging market. Uh, I, I think that this is going to be proven out over time. I think that the interesting way to play it from a, you know, differentiated way is, maybe we don't focus necessarily on, uh, you know, what Google is doing or Tesla is doing, but what does this mean for Uber? What does this mean for Lyft when we think about the removal of a key cost for them, right? ‘Big Balls' No Longer Works for the US Government

Photograph:Edward 'Big Balls' Coristine, one of the first technologists hired as part of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is no longer working for the federal government, according to multiple sources. 'Edward Coristine resigned yesterday,' a White House official tells WIRED. Coristine received full-time employment status at the GSA late last month, as reported by WIRED. As of Tuesday afternoon, his Google Suite account with the General Services Administration (GSA) was no longer active, according to a source with direct knowledge. His name also no longer appears on a White House contact list of current DOGE employees on the federal payroll maintained by a senior administration official, the official says. In May, Coristine appeared to be attending regular meetings with departments and agencies, including a May 5 meeting with the Commerce Department to discuss Trump's golden Visa, a May 15 meeting to discuss implementing the DOGE agenda at the military, and a May 22 meeting with the Treasury Department. He was listed on a report regarding the GSA workforce on June 10. That report comes out once a month. Previously, Coristine was one of a handful of DOGE-affiliated staffers who were occasionally seen at GSA headquarters in Washington DC. He worked from the sixth floor of the office, which was cordoned off for employees affiliated with DOGE and the agency's leadership team. The GSA and Coristine did not immediately respond to requests for comment from WIRED. When Musk exited government in an official capacity last month, DOGE's future was uncertain. Musk's top lieutenant, Steve Davis, president of the Boring Company, another Musk venture, also announced he would leave DOGE with Musk. Sahil Lavingia, a former DOGE member who WIRED first identified at the Department of Veterans' Affairs says, 'I have heard since Elon and Steve have supposedly departed, they've terminated a lot of those that got hired. They're all still probationary, right? There's that two-year probationary period. So there's a good chance that a lot of those people end up getting fired anyway.' Coristine, according to Lavingia, was one of a small group of technologists who were highly trusted within DOGE and deployed across multiple federal agencies, and given multiple federal laptops. 'The core group of pre-inauguration engineers joked about how many laptops they had. It was almost like a competition in the sense to have seven, eight different laptops that they would run around with,' says Lavingia. During his time in government—a period in which DOGE sought to dismantle large parts of the federal bureaucracy, obtained direct access to sensitive federal payment systems, and worked to join siloed systems together to enable surveillance of people in the US—Coristine appeared at the GSA, Office of Personnel Management, the US Agency for International Development, the Department of Education, and the Small Business Administration. Coristine, who has gone by the handle 'Big Balls' online, is a 19-year-old high school graduate who worked at Neuralink for several months and founded a company called LLC in 2021. The company owns several domains including two registered in Russia, one of which is an AI Discord bot. He also briefly worked for a company founded by reformed black hat hackers called the Path Network, and a Telegram handle associated with Coristine appears to have solicited a distributed denial of service attack.
