Firefighters urged to practise caution on social media
LABUAN: Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) personnel have been reminded to exercise prudence and professionalism when using social media, as digital platforms now hold considerable influence over public opinion and the reputation of institutions.
Its director-general, Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube could serve as powerful tools to promote the department's image when used responsibly.
He stressed, however, that the management of public perception on social media must be approached with caution.
'Misuse of these platforms, particularly through emotional or misleading criticism could jeopardise the credibility of the department.
'Our personnel must remain neutral and refrain from making unfounded comments or disseminating inaccurate information that could discredit any party or provoke public sensitivity,' he said at the Fire Service Medal Award Ceremony, 2024 Excellent Service Award, 30-Year Service Certificate, and Commendable Service Certificate at a leading hotel here today.
Nor Hisham reminded fire and rescue personnel that they are bound by the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993, Official Secrets Act 1972, and the department's social media guidelines.
'Upholding these regulations is crucial to maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of the department,' he said.
Nor Hisham also outlined several strategic areas of focus for the Labuan JBPM this year, among them is the continued commitment to the Labuan Emergency Mutual Aid (LEMA) framework, which is vital in managing risks associated with the island's oil and gas sector.
He noted the need to review the LEMA manual, as the current version refers to the now-defunct MKN Directive No. 20, which has been replaced by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) Directive No. 1.
Nor Hisham highlighted the department's role in promoting water safety awareness in line with the government's CHASE (Clean, Healthy, Advanced, Safe and Eco-Friendly) City vision.
CHASE City vision particularly follows the RM39 million allocation for the Victoria Harbour Beach waterfront development.
'JBPM will be responsible for advising on and enforcing water safety standards as part of its duties under the Majlis Keselamatan Aktiviti Air (MKAA),' he said.
He further announced that the federal government has approved the construction of 72 new quarters for the staff of the Labuan JBPM, at a total cost of RM70 million, with RM300,000 allocated for 2025.
He called on local officers to ensure that the project would be carried out according to the schedule.
Nor Hisham also reiterated JBPM's support for the 'One Billion Readiness Initiatives', which aims to train 4.5 million people in fire and emergency response from 2025 to 2027.
'This includes delivering 12,000 community education programmes to increase public preparedness,' he said.
Commending Labuan JBPM's outstanding achievements in physical fitness and competency, he noted their perfect 100 per cent pass rate in the Firefighter Fitness Test and remarkable success in the Wellness Hub programme, which surpassed its target with a 162 per cent completion rate. The department also performed well in tactical and individual competency assessments,' he added.

Fire Dept conducts Mount Kinabalu evacuation drill, marks quake anniversary

RANAU (June 6): The Sabah State Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) successfully conducted a three-day Mount Kinabalu Evacuation Simulation Exercise from June 3 to 5. Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Mohd Pisar Aziz said that the exercise not only commemorates the tragic earthquake incident that occurred on June 5, 2015, but also serves as a platform for disaster preparedness in high-risk locations such as Mount Kinabalu. 'The exercises starts from Panalaban to the Low's Peak summit of Mount Kinabalu involving 49 participants in the mountainous area and 20 participants at the foot of the mountain. 'Overall, the exercise simulation was a success,' he said during the closing ceremony of the Mount Kinabalu Evacuation Simulation Exercise and in conjunction with the 2025 Mount Kinabalu Earthquake Commemoration Ceremony. Mohd Pisar also expressed his appreciation to all agencies and parties involved directly and indirectly in making the exercise a success, including Sabah Parks, Sabah National Security Council, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Royal Malaysian Police, KEPSAS, APM, Mountain Malim Gunung Association, Porter Association, Sutera Sanctuary Lodge, KOKTAS, Mountain Torq and Sabapak Eco Berhad. Mohd Pisar said the commitment and efficiency shown by all participants served as an example for the implementation of such exercises in the future. He said the 2015 earthquake that claimed 18 lives including climbers and mountain guides, and injuring many climbers had triggered a major change in the safety approach in the Mount Kinabalu area. 'Such exercises like this will test the coordination, communication and emergency response systems between agencies, in addition to educating the local community including tourism operators, mountain guides, porters and residents to be better prepared. 'I hope these exercises can be continued periodically so that the level of preparedness of all parties remains at an optimal level. 'We cannot be complacent or forgetful because disasters know no time and place. Soil depression detected at Jalan Batu Kawan in Penang, authorities close off affected section, begin urgent repairs, says state exco
BATU KAWAN, June 6 — A soil depression was detected yesterday at P149 Jalan Batu Kawan, specifically at the junction connecting the road to a newly completed bridge, according to Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari. He said the exact cause of the incident is still under investigation by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and the project contractor. However, immediate remedial measures were taken by PDC upon receiving public complaints. 'PDC promptly carried out premix patching to raise the road level and installed warning signs to prevent any untoward incidents involving road users,' he told Bernama when contacted. He said the contractor will proceed with excavation work to determine the root cause of the soil depression before implementing permanent repair measures, which will involve the use of additional materials such as geotextile, basal reinforcement, and other necessary strengthening methods. 'These actions are essential to ensure long-term road stability and to prevent future soil depression. All repair costs would be borne by the contractor because the project is still within the defects liability period (DLP,' he said. Meanwhile, Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in Penang, John Sagun Francis, said a team of seven members from the Batu Kawan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was sent to the location after the department received a call regarding the soil depression. On arrival, the team found that a soil depression had occurred, but there were no victims involved. Immediate action was taken to close off the affected area and ensure no vehicles were allowed on the compromised section of the road,' he said. The incident gained public attention yesterday after a social media post went viral, showing images of the soil depression along the main road near the Batu Kawan bridge. The post also highlighted visible cracks on the concrete structure dividing the road.
