Malaysian carriers reroute flights, cancel services amid India-Pakistan tensions
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian carriers have rerouted and suspended several international flights following the temporary closure of Pakistani airspace, triggered by escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) said two Europe-bound flights operated by Malaysia Airlines – MH2 to London Heathrow and MH22 to Paris Charles de Gaulle – were rerouted on May 6 to avoid Pakistani airspace.
"Both flights completed a brief refuelling stop in Doha and have since departed to continue their respective journeys," MAG said in a response to Business Times' query.
The group also announced a temporary suspension of Malaysia Airlines flights to and from Amritsar, India until May 9, in line with the closure of Amritsar Airport from May 7-9 due to ongoing security and operational concerns in the region.
"The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority. We are monitoring the situation closely and will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure safe and reliable operations," the group said.
A spokesperson added that MAG will continue to evaluate the situation before deciding whether to resume flights through Pakistani airspace, even after its reopening.
Pakistan closed its airspace for 48 hours starting May 7, amid increased military and geopolitical friction with India.
Batik Air Malaysia has also taken precautionary measures, suspending services between Kuala Lumpur and Lahore, Pakistan and Amritsar on May 7 and 8.
The affected flights include OD131 and OD132 to and from Lahore, as well as OD271 and OD272 to and from Amritsar.
"The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority. Batik Air is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with relevant authorities and will provide timely updates as new information becomes available," the airline said in a statement.
AirAsia Malaysia has also suspended services to Amritsar, stating that all flights to and from the Indian city will be temporarily halted until May 9 due to the closure of the airport.
The carrier's long-haul affiliate, AirAsia X Bhd said it is continuing operations with slight adjustments, including rerouting certain routes to avoid the affected airspace.
"AirAsia X is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to follow all necessary safety procedures, as the safety of our guests and crew remains our utmost priority," the airline said.
Checks by Business Times on FlightRadar24 on May 7 showed Pakistani airspace devoid of commercial aircraft movements.

Intuit launches e-invoicing solution via QuickBooks platform
KUALA LUMPUR: Global financial technology firm Intuit Inc has launched a new e-invoicing solution in Malaysia via its QuickBooks platform to help businesses comply with government regulations and enhance operational efficiency. Launched on June 12, the solution is designed to support businesses in meeting the government's e-invoicing requirements while reducing the complexity, cost and risks associated with manual processes. Intuit vice-president for Asia Pacific Lars Leber said the initiative aligns with the government's broader digital economy agenda, especially as Malaysia prepares to assume the Asean chairmanship. "Our e-invoicing solution not only helps Malaysian businesses meet compliance requirements, it also contributes to the broader goal of improving tax transparency and digital efficiency," he said in a statement today. He said automation would help businesses minimise errors, improve cash flow visibility, and shorten payment turnaround times. "We're helping businesses operate more efficiently while ensuring data accuracy for regulators. It's a win-win that strengthens the overall business ecosystem," he added. Leber said Intuit remained committed to supporting Malaysia's growth, with the e-invoicing tool marking the first of many planned innovations. "We're invested in driving the success of our customers in Malaysia, and e-invoicing is just the beginning. More innovation is on the way as we continue to strengthen our position as an AI leader, building a platform where everything is in one place to run and grow your business, from lead to cash, with a virtual team of AI-enabled agents and human experts." The solution enables users to generate and send invoices with just a few clicks, track payment statuses in real time, and connect directly with the Inland Revenue Board (IRB). It also offers full transparency throughout the invoicing process and reduces the risk of business disruptions, revenue loss, or supply chain issues associated with non-compliance. With rising demand for digitalisation across Southeast Asia, Intuit said its tools are designed to help businesses keep pace with evolving regulations while remaining competitive in a rapidly changing economic landscape.

Google rejects app store age verification for online content
Google's Play Store is part of the Android operating system, by far the most widely used around the globe. (Reuters pic) PARIS : American tech heavyweight Google today reiterated its opposition to verifying the age of a device's user through the app stores built into operating systems, calling a proposal from Facebook and Instagram parent Meta 'ineffective'. Limiting access to age-restricted content online is a live issue in Europe, with France battling pornography sites over its newly introduced requirement that they check users' ages. Paris is also one of several capitals pressing Brussels to introduce Europe-wide regulations cutting off access to social networks for under-15s over concerns including addiction, cyberbullying and hate speech. Basing age verification on details from a device's app store 'would require the sharing of granular age band data with millions of developers… who don't need it', such as producers of uncontroversial apps like flashlights, Google wrote in a blog post. 'We have strong concerns about the risks this 'solution' would pose to children,' it added. The search giant's Play Store is a part of the Android operating system, by far the most widely used around the globe. Google said that using app store data to verify ages would also leave major ways people access content online unprotected for the underage, such as desktop computers or shared family devices. Apple – whose own App Store is loaded on every device running its iOS operating system, such as iPhones and iPads – has also pushed back against Meta's proposal. 'The right place to address the dangers of age-restricted content online is the limited set of websites and apps that host that content,' the iPhone maker said in a February document. 'Implementing age verification at the operating system or app store level will help ensure that we create an ecosystem that's safe for teens,' the Facebook owner's safety chief Antigone Davis told Euronews in February. Meta has since launched a campaign for European regulation to require the measure. Europe's Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into force last year, says it is up to platforms like Meta's to verify the age of their users – not providers of operating systems or app stores. Google said that changing to the latter system – which has also been pushed by Pornhub parent company Aylo – would mean 'reengineering the protocols that have defined the decentralised web in ways that are hard to fully predict'.
