
Team develops esophageal cancer prediction method using the inside of the cheek
A team of Kyoto University and other researchers has developed a method of predicting with high accuracy the risk of someone developing esophageal cancer by analyzing cells collected from inside the person's cheeks.
If brought into practical use, the method could facilitate early cancer detection and cancer prevention through lifestyle improvements.
The team's findings were published in an online international medical journal in April.
Its study covered 222 people age 40-94, all with a history of smoking and drinking who either had esophageal cancer or did not.
The team swabbed the inside of their cheeks to extract cheek mucosa cells and analyzed any genetic mutations.
Participants with a lower tolerance for alcohol had more genetic mutations in their extracted cells when their alcoholic intake increased. On the other hand, those whose bodies were capable of processing alcohol well did not display such an increase.
The team also found that esophageal cancer patients had more genetic mutations than those who did not, even if their cancer was discovered at an early stage.
The team managed to make cancer probability predictions with an accuracy of over 70% by analyzing various genetic mutation data together.
The team found "what is believed to be a biomarker that indicates (cancer) risks more objectively and accurately than with the conventional method of interviewing (patients) on their lifestyle habits and predispositions," said team member Akira Yokoyama, lecturer at Kyoto University Hospital.

Emboldened by roaring online success in the U.S., South Korea's cosmetic startups are expanding their bricks-and-mortar presence in the world's biggest consumer market, confident their mass appeal will offset the hit from tariffs. Brands like Tirtir, d'Alba, Torriden and Beauty of Joseon are in talks with major retailers to stock their U.S. shelves, company executives have said. Korean beauty or "K-beauty" products are able to compete globally on quality, price and snappy marketing and have benefited greatly from the success of the Asian export giant's other consumer hits, namely its music, film and television. "K-culture — things like PSY in the past, BTS, and then Korean dramas and films like 'Parasite' — those really paved the way," Tirtir CEO An Byung-Jun said. "In the U.S. market, there was already growing interest in South Korea. Then Korean cosmetics entered the scene. Tirtir's An said the baseline 10% tariff that the U.S. has already imposed is "endurable," although the planned 25% tariff on South Korean products due in July may force the company to raise prices "a little bit." There are already signs of growth plateauing for some companies, such as startup COSRX, now part of Korean cosmetics giant AmorePacific, as competition heats up and cheaper alternatives emerge, analysts said. Many missing dementia patients in Japan who died found in river areas
The largest number of people with dementia or suspected dementia who were discovered dead after going missing in Japan were found in river areas. The National Police Agency said in 2024 police nationwide received 18,121 reports of people with dementia or suspected dementia going missing after wandering away. The figure was 918 less than the previous year. Of the people reported missing nationwide, 16,877 -- or 93 percent -- were later confirmed to be alive, while 491 were found dead. An NPA analysis of the locations where the deceased were found shows that 382 people -- or more than 77 percent -- died within 5 kilometers of where they went missing. Among the 491 dead, the largest number of bodies -- 115 -- were found in locations such as rivers and dry riverbeds. A total of 79 were discovered in irrigation canals and gutters, while 71 were found in mountains and forests. It is believed that causes of death included drowning as well as slipping and falling. Osaka Prefecture in western Japan recorded the largest number of missing people at 2,086. That was followed by the eastern Japan prefectures of Kanagawa with 1,907 and Saitama with 1,812. Aichi Prefecture in central Japan recorded 1,476 while Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan followed with 1,454. There were 111 cases in which missing people were reportedly located with the help of GPS devices attached to items such as clothing and shoes. The NPA is therefore urging police throughout the country to find missing people as quickly as possible by using technology such as GPS and drones.
