Phillies Trade Idea Lands Pirates' Oneil Cruz as Max Kepler's Replacement
Phillies Trade Idea Lands Pirates' Oneil Cruz as Max Kepler's Replacement originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Max Kepler made a ridiculous comment regarding his playing time after the Philadelphia Phillies' disastrous performance against the Houston Astros. Despite his struggles this season, he had complained that the Phillies misled him and that he deserves the starting role in left field.

Kepler is disgruntled, and the Phillies could be looking for his replacement. One solution for Jim Riley of Ballcap Sports could be found in a trade idea with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Riley presented a trade idea to send Pirates outfielder Oneil Cruz to the Phillies in exchange for Mick Abel, Aroon Escobar, and Dylan Campbell. While landing Cruz would be a nice addition, especially since he's under control through 2028, the players given up would be a lot.
Abel is the Phillies' fifth-ranked prospect and has been solid in the Major Leagues since his call-up. His 3.47 ERA in five starts is a solid start to his MLB career, which, a year ago, looked like it was going up in smoke.

Campbell is the Phillies' 30th-ranked prospect and an outfielder with a .702 OPS between High-A and Double-A this season. The real prospect going to the Pirates is Escobar.
While the team's 13th-ranked prospect, he's been raking in the Minors this year. In 2025, his .832 OPS is a solid mark, and he's been a riser in the Phillies system this year. Losing him would sting, but the player the Phillies are getting back is no slouch.

Cruz is one of the game's more exciting players. His speed and power are incredibly appealing, as he can score at any moment in any game. While he's been lazy defensively at times, moving to a postseason contender might help him get into the games more than languishing in Pittsburgh.

Despite Cruz not playing at his best this year, he still has decent numbers. In 74 games, Cruz has a .210 batting average, 15 home runs, and an NL-leading 27 stolen bases. Cruz also has a 104 OPS+, showing he's an above-average batter this year.
With their major outfield issues, the Phillies could benefit greatly from landing Cruz. While the package Riley presented would be a lot, for 3.5 years of Cruz, the Phillies would have a fun outfield option for the foreseeable future.
In a season where the Phillies are looking to win the World Series, this trade idea would help bolster a struggling offense and provide a spark to the team in one of the most electrifying players in baseball.

Angels Fans React to Mike Trout Post on Monday
Angels Fans React to Mike Trout Post on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is playing in his fifteenth major-league season since being selected 25th overall in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft. Advertisement Widely regarded as the best player of his generation, Trout won American League Rookie of the Year in 2012, has captured three AL MVP Awards, and is an 11-time All-Star. In 2019, he signed a 12-year, $426.5 million extension that keeps him in Anaheim through 2030 and includes a full no-trade clause. Despite his personal accolades, Trout has yet to experience postseason success with the Angels, who have not won a playoff game during his career. At age 33, he's batting just .230 with a .788 OPS—well below his career averages of .297 and .984—signaling his best days may be behind him. Los Angeles Angels right fielder Mike Trout (27)© Rich Storry-Imagn Images On Monday, the Angels posted a photo of Trout in an attempt to get him more votes for the All-Star Game in Atlanta. Advertisement The team wrote, '#VoteTrout daily, now until Wednesday (7/2) at 9am PT, to help him get to Atlanta!' Fans reacted to the Angels post on X. "Let's hope he has a good series in Atlanta," a fan said. Another added, "Nope. He's not deserving." One fan wrote, "If Trout crushes in ATL, he'll def be an All-Star." "Vote for the best," said a fan. "And vote only Trout for AL OF!" said another. Trout secured two All-Star Game MVP Awards in 2016 and 2019, rising to the occasion with baseball's biggest stars. The Angels have surged in June, improving to 41–42 and sitting only two games back of a wild-card spot. With October contention within reach, a rebound for Trout is critical—both to boost Anaheim's lineup and to earn him a spot on the All-Star roster. Phillies Send Message to Aaron Nola After Major News
Phillies Send Message to Aaron Nola After Major News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Philadelphia Phillies right-handed starter Aaron Nola is playing in his age-32 MLB season after making his debut with the team in 2015. Advertisement Drafted seventh overall by Philadelphia in the 2014 MLB Draft, he's built a solid career thus far over eleven major-league seasons as an important piece of the Phillies rotation, which has featured aces and veterans alike. Nola earned his first All-Star selection in 2018 and has finished among the top ten in Cy Young Award voting three times, underscoring his consistent efficiency. In 2019, he signed a seven-year, $172 million extension to remain with the Phillies, a deal that carries him through the 2030 season and reflects the club's long-term commitment to its homegrown ace. Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola (27)Bill Streicher-Imagn Images Currently on the 60-day injured list with a right-ribcage stress fracture—a setback on the heels of an earlier ankle sprain—Nola is expected to miss time through the All-Star break, with a targeted return in the season's second half. Advertisement Upon officially reaching ten full years of MLB service time, the Phillies took to X to honor him writing, 'Think we can safely speak for everyone in the organization when we say it's been an absolute pleasure to have you around all these years, Nols. Congratulations, and here's to many, many more!' This season, even in healthy outings, Nola has struggled to a 1–7 record with a 6.16 ERA over nine starts—numbers well below his career norms. He remains best known for October excellence, however: in ten postseason starts he's recorded 58 strikeouts and delivered clutch performances, most memorably during Philadelphia's 2022 World Series run. Advertisement As the Phillies eye another playoff push, they'll look for Nola to return to form in the second half to help guide them to another postseason trip.
