Outlander's Sam Heughan to star as Macbeth in theatre debut

Scottish acting star Sam Heughan, famed for his role as Outlander's Jamie Fraser, says his 'dreams have come true' as he will make his debut with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Outlander star Sam Heughan is set to return to the stage for his theatre debut as Macbeth, at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). It comes as they announced their line-up of events for the year ahead, and into 2026. Among a stellar line-up of plays to take place, Heughan was delighted to announce he will star in a leading role of RSC's latest version of Macbeth at William Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon. ‌ The Scots actor, famed for portraying Jamie Fraser in hit historical romance programme Outlander, admitted his dreams have come true as he landed the role. He will feature alongside The Day Of The Jackal actress Lia Williams, starring as Lady Macbeth. ‌ Discussing his new role, Sam,45, said: "At age 18, standing on the main stage of the Royal Lyceum Edinburgh, playing 'spear-carrier number 2' (essentially a glorified extra) in a production of Macbeth, I could only dream of one day playing the infamous title character. 'It feels full circle to be returning to the stage, after over a decade working primarily in television and film. 'Not only is Macbeth my favourite Shakespeare play: intense, immediate and unsettling, it also happens to be famously Scottish. 'The RSC has always been at the pinnacle of my ambition and I feel deeply honoured and thankful to be working alongside some enormously talented and creative people. 'The Other Place is the perfect space to create an intense, intimate production and, like Lady M, we will be calling upon the spirits of the RSC's highly acclaimed past productions for their blessing.' ‌ David Tennant, Sir Ian McKellen, and Ralph Fiennes are among the actors who have played the famous character previously. The new production will be shown at The Other Place theatre from October 9 to December 6. Before fame, Sam was looking fresh-faced and almost unrecognisable on stage in the award-winning production of David Greig's Outlying Islands when it premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival back in 2002. ‌ The Traverse Theatre Company shared a promotional poster featuring Sam as he made an uncanny resemblance to a character from the Twilight vampire series, sporting pale skin, red lips and bright blue eyes. The actor was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Performer for his role in the stage show, reports Hello!, with it coming two years before Sam appeared in his first professional television role in the miniseries Island at War. Meanwhile, Outlander fans are preparing to mark the end of an era as they await the eighth and final season of the globally celebrated franchise, based on Diana Gabaldon's best-selling books.

What do we know about HBO's new Harry Potter series?

Harry Potter will return to the screen as part of a new HBO television series, with a young Scottish actor cast to play Harry. The streaming giant announced on Tuesday that Dominic McLaughlin will play the protagonist Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will be Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will portray Ron Weasley. It comes after major actors such as John Lithgow and Nick Frost were cast for the show which begins production this summer. Potterheads will get to see a new side of the wizarding world with the show to focus on adapting the books of author and executive producer JK Rowling. The Harry Potter franchise has already been made into eight blockbuster movies, with the final film hitting the big screen in 2011. Since then, spinoff movies under the Fantastic Beasts franchise have been made starring Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law. But HBO's new series promises to bring new faces to the already established names. Dominic McLaughlin will take the lead role as Harry Potter in the new series. The Scottish actor has appeared in productions of William Shakespeare's Macbeth at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh. He performed alongside three-time Oscar-nominated actor Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort in the Potter movies. Production company SC Films confirmed that Dominic recently filmed the Sky Originals family comedy film Grow opposite Nick Frost. He is also to appear in the upcoming BBC action adventure series Gifted, which saw more than 3,000 Scottish children apply to be on the show. The Performance Academy Scotland confirmed McLaughlin spent a number of years with them. They said the news was 'magical'. A spokesperson said: 'We are not sure that this will ever feel real but we said from the start that Dominic was the perfect Harry and we are thrilled for everyone else to see this soon too. 'Dominic, we will forever be proud of you. We have had an incredible journey with you these last five years at TPA and can't wait for what's next on this journey. 'We are extremely proud to represent you and can't wait to go on this wizarding journey together.' Arabella Stanton will be Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will portray Ron Weasley after a casting call in September saw around 32,000 children audition for the lead roles. HBO reviewed more than 1,000 tapes per day after it was previously stipulated that the three young child actors must be residents of the UK or Ireland, and aged between nine and 11 on April 2025. Other actors announced for the show include John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. Luke Thallon will play the first book's main antagonist Quirinus Quirrell, and Welsh comedian and actor Paul Whitehouse as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch. The series will focus on adapting Rowling's books for TV, with each series to follow the arc of the seven novels. Fans can expect season one to be centred around the events of the Philosopher's Stone, in which Harry and co first arrive at Hogwarts. They are faced with navigating a series of dangerous tasks with Harry eventually facing Voldemort for the first time on screen in the form of Hogwarts teacher Quirinus Quirrell. iStock Dragon breathing fire at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida. Reports suggest the series will then follow chronologically through Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince and finally the Deathly Hallows. In 2023, however, Warner Bros. Discovery said the stories from each of the books will become 'a decade-long series', suggesting it could last longer than seven seasons. JK Rowling will serve as executive producer on the show, but it is not clear if any of the series will be filmed in Scotland. Rowling maintains ownership over key aspects of Harry Potter intellectual property – with the books, films, video games and theatrical shows estimated to be worth £20bn. She said all three young actors cast to play Harry, Ron and Hermione were 'wonderful' and that she 'couldn't be happier' they will be involved. Iconic locations such as the Glenfinnan Viaduct appeared in the films, with Rowling taking inspiration for places in the books from sites in Edinburgh, Glen Coe and Fort William. iStock Glenfinnan Railway Viaduct became famous around the world as the route of the Hogwarts Express. Edinburgh, where Rowling wrote the early stages of the books, has a number of tourist spots for Potter fans to visit dotted around the city. The series is written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner, while Mark Mylod will executive-produce and direct multiple episodes of the series. Upon announcing the casting for Harry, Ron and Hermione, they said: 'After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. 'The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. 'We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.' Outlander's Sam Heughan admits he's 'terrified' as he lands totally different new role

Outlander star Sam Heughan has landed his first stage role in over a decade, and it's a big one Sam Heughan, the star of Outlander, is poised for a grand return to the stage after more than ten years, diving into his next role with fervour. Post-filming the final eighth series of the acclaimed Starz drama, he has secured what he calls a "dream role" as he joins the esteemed Royal Shakespeare Company for the first time. ‌ Heughan is set to embody Macbeth, Shakespeare's infamous Royal murderer, marking his return to Shakespearean theatre since performing in King John back in 2012 and taking on the caped crusader in Batman Live during 2011-12. ‌ The Scots actor describes this foray back to the boards as "the drug I'm looking for" following more than a decade as the dashing Jamie Fraser alongside Caitriona Balfe's Claire on Outlander. Joining him in this venture, The Crown actress Lia Williams is slated to play Lady Macbeth, while Daniel Raggett is at the helm directing this iteration at The Other Place studio venue in Stratford-upon-Avon, under the banner of the RSC, reports the Scottish Daily Express. Fans can witness Heughan as Macbeth from 9th October to 6th December later this year. Speaking on the motivation behind seeking out this challenge, Heughan expressed to Deadline: "I was looking for something that would really excite me. I've been doing Outlander for 11 years, and obviously it was brilliant, but I wanted something else. "And I went to the RSC to see Edward II there, and I just felt that buzz. ‌ "I sat in the auditorium and I felt that excitement, sort of the churn in my stomach as the lights went down and I was like, 'Yeah, this is the drug I'm looking for.'" He then confessed: "And it's terrifying. And I think that's a good thing to be scared again." Reflecting on his last theatrical outing as Batman, he lightheartedly recalled that although "it was not quite Shakespeare or the RSC", it did involve an international tour that spanned across the UK and Europe all the way to the US. ‌ "We did Las Vegas, we played in Bueno Aires and the O2 in London hanging upside down, wearing PVC." ‌ With a touch of humour, he hinted: "I dunno, maybe there'll be a bit of that in Macbeth as well. You never know." In addition, the actor offered some insight into the anticipated release timeline of the final Outlander season, though no official date has been set thus far. He indicated that season eight of Outlander could likely make its debut "towards next year", considering this would be after the prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood hits the screens.
