Why has Palmeiras vs Al Ahly FIFA Club World Cup match been suspended?
The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Group A match between Palmeiras and Al Ahly was suspended in the 66th minute at the MetLife Stadium on Wednesday (Thursday according to IST).
FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES FROM THE INTER MIAMI VS FC PORTO MATCH
The reason the match was halted after an hour's play was because of an expected storm.
'Your attention please. For your safety, we are going to have everyone leave the Seating Bowl area and take shelter inside the stadium because of severe weather in the area,' an official notice said on the giant screen at the MetLife Stadium.
Referee Anthony Taylor told the teams to leave the pitch immediately after Palmeiras had taken a 2-0 lead in their Group A clash after advice from a pitchside official.
After the match was halted for 30 minutes as mandated by FIFA, both teams resumed play from the point the game had been originally halted.
'The situation has now been resolved and it is all clear and safe to return to your seats,' the announcement said.
What does FIFA protocol say about halting matches due to thunderstorms?
FIFA protocols mandate that if lightning is visible or thunder is heard, the match referee must immediately suspend play due to the risk of lightning strikes.
The suspension should last for at least 30 minutes, and play cannot resume until 30 minutes after the last instance of lightning or thunder. The players and officials should seek a safer location during the suspension.
If lightning or thunder occurs again after the 30-minute count has started, the clock is reset, and another 30-minute delay is implemented.
A growing concern for hosting football tournaments in the USA
It is the third time a match has been interrupted in the tournament due to the weather.
The start of the Group F match in Orlando on Tuesday between South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan of South Korea was delayed by 65 minutes because of the threat of lightning.
The Pachuca vs RB Salzburg Group H was also halted due to lightning.

Club World Cup 2025: Messi Magic Secures Inter Miami Thrilling 2-1 Win Over Porto
Last Updated: The Argentine was brought down outside the area and, after dusting himself off, arrowed a classic Messi free-kick into the top right corner to give Inter Miami the winning lead. It was trademark from Lionel Messi, who scored a scintillating free-kick goal to secure a stunning 2-1 comeback victory for Inter Miami against Porto in the Club World Cup on Thursday. The Argentine superstar scored a second-half set-piece to seal the unexpected win for the MLS team, significantly boosting their chances of advancing from Group A. Inter Miami and Palmeiras each have four points, following the Brazilian side's 2-0 win over Al Ahly earlier. Al Ahly and Porto both have one point. Samu Aghehowa's early penalty put the Portuguese side ahead, as they dominated the first half and had several scoring opportunities. However, Telasco Segovia equalised for Miami, and Messi's free-kick secured a notable win in a match many believed would be straightforward for Porto. Inter Miami, co-owned by former England international David Beckham, played their first MLS match in 2020 and signed Messi in 2023, significantly raising their profile. This marked the first competitive victory for an MLS side over European opposition, following Chelsea's win over Los Angeles FC earlier in the week. 'It's a huge joy, the whole team made a big effort, we worked really well," Messi told DAZN. 'It's a really important win for us and we have to enjoy it. You can see that we want to compete, and today we competed against a really good European team. We knew that today we were weaker, but we had our strengths." Despite Messi's presence, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium was less than half-full at kick-off, hindered by another 3:00 pm start on a working day, as it was for Chelsea's opener at the venue. More fans arrived throughout the game, eager to see the 37-year-old, widely regarded as the greatest player ever, with nearly 32,000 in attendance by the end. Messi did not disappoint, heavily involved from the start. He delivered a dipping ball to veteran striker Luis Suarez, who could only prod it at the goalkeeper. Porto took the lead in the eighth minute after being awarded a soft penalty following a VAR review, as Miami defender Noah Allen made light contact with Joao Mario in the box. Spain international Samu Aghehowa beat Oscar Ustari, who had saved a penalty in the goalless draw against Al Ahly, even though the keeper got a hand to his low effort. Uruguayan striker Suarez, 38, nearly equalised after Messi threaded him through on goal, but Porto goalkeeper Claudio Ramos denied him as he was forced to use his weaker left foot. Javier Mascherano's side almost levelled through US international Benjamin Cremaschi, but Ramos made a smart near-post stop to thwart him after Suarez broke open Porto's defence. Inter Miami equalised at the start of the second half when Segovia blasted home Marcelo Weigandt's inviting cut-back. Messi then put Miami ahead with a goal of his own making after 54 minutes. The playmaker was brought down outside the area and, after dusting himself off, arrowed a classic Messi free-kick into the top right corner. '(Messi) is a leader, he's the greatest player in the world," Inter Miami forward Fafa Picault told DAZN. 'I had a feeling (the free-kick) was going in. That was a great goal, a great show of leadership and coming in a clutch moment for us." Miami fought hard to keep Porto at bay, with groans from the stadium when seven minutes of stoppage time were announced. Mascherano's players threw themselves in front of shots in a manner reminiscent of the former Argentine defensive midfielder, ultimately securing their much-desired victory. (with agency inputs)

FIFA Club World Cup: How can Messi and Inter Miami qualify for Round of 16 after win vs Porto
Inter Miami clinched a 2-1 win against Porto in their FIFA Club World Cup match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday to stay second in the Group A standings. With all Group A teams (Inter Miami, Palmieras, Al Ahly and Porto) playing goalless draws in their opening match, it was not mathematically possible for any team to book a place in the Round of 16 on the second matchday. However, the general calculation is that five points will be enough to secure qualification, and four points might even do it. Therefore, the win against Porto was crucial for Lionel Messi and Co. as they got to four points. Despite being level on points with topper Palmeiras, Inter Miami stays second due to an inferior goal difference. Palmeiras kept a clean sheet in its 2-0 win against Al Ahly, while Inter Miami conceded a goal in its win against Porto. What must Inter Miami do to qualify for Round of 16? With four points already in the bag, a draw against Palmeiras in its last Group A game will be enough to send Inter Miami through to the knockouts. It can also qualify with a loss, provided Al Ahly and Porto play out a draw in their last Group A match. However, if Inter Miami loses against Palmeiras and either Al Ahly or Porto wins, then the various tiebreakers will come into play in deciding who makes it to the next round. Following are the tiebreakers (in order of preference): Group points Head-to-head in the game(s) between the teams in question Goal difference in the game(s) between the teams in question Goals scored in the game(s) between the teams in question Group goal difference Group goals scored Disciplinary points (yellow and red cards) Drawing of lots This is how Group A looks after Matchday 2
