Luke Littler capitulates to suffer shock defeat after being booed by darts fans
As Michael van Gerwen completed one of the great comebacks of the Premier League season, Luke Littler's miserable week betrayed the first cracks of a teenage superstar feeling the strain
Luke Littler squandered an invincible hand as his trial by a Scouse jury turned into a nightmare. And as Michael van Gerwen completed one of the great comebacks of the 2025 BetMGM Premier League season, Luke the Nuke's miserable week betrayed the first cracks of a teenage superstar feeling the strain.
From 4-0 up, Littler missed a dart to make it 5-0 and two more for a 6-3 win after being greeted at Liverpool's M&S Bank arena by a chorus of boos - because of his football allegiances as a Manchester United fan. But to widespread disbelief, Van Gerwen clawed his way back to snatch a 6-5 win in the deciding leg as the league leader's advantage evaporated.
Littler had braced himself for a noisy reception, posting 'Bring on the boos Liverpool' on his social media. And before the match, he admitted: 'My approach is to expect the worst - and if it's not as bad as I feared, I'll take that as a positive for myself.'
Littler's walk-on was more businesslike than usual, reserving sideways glances only for his entourage by the runway and not risking eye contact with any detractors at close quarters.
When he stormed into what should have been an impregnable lead, His Nukeship looked in the mood to whitewash the three-times world champion and seven-times Premier League winner.
Littler took out 160, after stepping back to let the nonsense subside, to go 5-3 up and gestured playfully to the crowd to keep the noise down.
But as his scoring power dried up, Van Gerwen hit back to force a decider - and Littler couldn't turn the tap back on when it was needed.
He still tops the table, and remains the bookies' favourite for back-to-back Premier League triumphs in next month's play-offs at London's O2 arena.
But he was so unsettled by his rough ride from a Munich crowd in his German Grand Prix semi-final defeat by another Dutchman, Gian van Veen, on Easter Monday that he expressed relief at not having to return to the Fatherland on the European Tour until October.
And when Littler's badinage with the Merseyside gallery backfired 72 hours later, it capped his worst week as world champion.
The Liverpool audience was more upset by home favourite Stephen Bunting's 5-1 defeat against Rob Cross, which denied the 'Bullet' the extended homecoming party he craved.
Ten years ago, in his debut Premier League campaign, Bunting was wiped out 7-1 by at the same venue. Now the world No.4s remains rooted to the foot of the table and a long shot for the play-offs.

Premier League star 'buys SIX flats in one day' - as the midfielder looks to expand his budding property empire
A Premier League footballer has expanded his property portfolio by buying six flats in a single day. The 30-year-old runs a successful buy-to-let business with more than a dozen homes and recently spent £1.6million to expand his budding empire. According to a report from The Sun, Bournemouth star Ryan Christie purchased the apartments in Glasgow back in April. The Scotland international runs Twenty Two Investment Properties Ltd alongside his partner, Georgina Bell, 30. The six properties - situated near the River Clyde in the Scottish city - represented a seven-figure outlay for the couple. Records note that the pair, who are reportedly set to marry this summer, purchased the flats at £275,000, £220,000, two at £215,000, and £175,000 and £160,000 on April 28. Christie missed much of the latter half of Bournemouth's campaign with a groin injury but was still named the Cherries' Player of the Season as Andoni Iraola's side recorded a top-half finish. 'Ryan's work rate is quite incredible. He was player of the season, has undergone surgery and it also looks like he is due to get married,' a source told The Sun. 'But he still found time to splash a fortune on half-a-dozen homes.' Christie joined Bournemouth from Celtic in 2021 and was instrumental in leading the club to the Premier League in his first season on the south coast. Since then the midfielder has racked up 98 top flight appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

Peter Schmeichel's new Playboy model wife after Man Utd legend's difficult announcement
Peter Schmeichel's new Playboy model wife after Man Utd legend's difficult announcement Peter Schmeichel is back on UK TV screens this weekend as part of Soccer Aid, with the former goalkeeper trading his gloves for a tactics board as manager of the World XI Peter Schmeichel divorced first wife Bente in 2013 (Image: Corbis via Getty Images ) Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel is no stranger to an eye-catching transfer having joined their neighbours Manchester City. The treble-winning shot stopper enjoyed huge success with the Red Devils, establishing himself as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all-time. But he departed after their famous 1999 Champions League triumph, a decision he's since admitted was a mistake. His subsequent move to City in 2002 also raised eyebrows, with Gary Neville memorably snubbing him in the tunnel when the two sides met. But both return to Old Trafford for Soccer Aid this weekend with any wounds long healed. Neville is part of the England squad set to take on the World XI, who Schmeichel will be managing. The Dane, 61, will be back in familiar surroundings at the Theatre of Dreams, but it'll be a different woman cheering him on than the one he was married to during his playing career. Why did Peter Schmeichel get a divorce? Schmeichel met his wife Bente when they were just teenagers. They married young and went on to have two children together - daughter Cecile, and his more well-known offspring, son Kasper. He followed in his father's footsteps, going on to miraculously win the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016. But by that point, his parents had split up. Article continues below Schmeichel announced in 2013: "After 31 years of living together, I am sorry to have to inform you that Bente and I'm in the process of separation negotiations. The pair had been married 31 years (Image: UK Press via Getty Images ) "It has been a very difficult decision, but in the circumstances we feel good. We agree that our family has the highest priority, and we hope that the media will respect our privacy, and that we have no further comment." He didn't disclose the reasons for their split, but it was believed to be a mutual decision after their relationship grew strained. It didn't take long for Schmeichel to find love again. Who is Peter Schmeichel married to? A year later he began dating Laura von Lindholm, a former Playboy model turned nutritionist who's nine years his junior. 'I met Laura in a period where I was making changes in my life,' he told BBC's Desert Island Discs. Schmeichel is now married to former model Laura von Lindholm (Image: Adam Davy/PA Wire ) 'I fell in love and we had a little getaway in London and I didn't want the public to know that I was in a new relationship. I wanted to keep a low profile so I was wearing a scarf and a hat and everything. "And Laura's looking at me and she's saying, 'How famous are you?' Laura didn't know anything about football and she's kind of ridiculing me a little bit.' She soon realised the scale of his fame when a group of builders saw through Schmeichel's disguise and shouted out his name. He continued: 'And then we go to the Champions League final in Milan and this little guy comes up to me. After a period of separation, they reunited and wed (Image: Instagram/lvonl ) "I've never met him in my life, but I know it's Phil Collins. I never met him but he's a big Man U fan… And Laura is next to me and she's completely, I mean she's completely, gobsmacked." However, it wasn't plain sailing for his second serious relationship either, as he and Laura broke up in 2017 before rekindling and swiftly deciding to tie the knot, getting married later in 2019. It took place in front of 200 guests at the Egebaeksvang Church in Espergaerde, Copenhagen. Article continues below Schmeichel has a house in the town, although he's often on location around Europe for CBS Sports' Champions League coverage. And he's been back in England this week gearing up for Soccer Aid and whipping his World XI squad into shape.
