Shelbourne and Linfield paired in mouthwatering Champions League cross-border qualifier

Daily Record3 hours ago

It's an all-Irish derby in the first round of Champions League qualifying between Damien Duff and David Healy's teams
Shelbourne and Linfield are set to clash in an historic Champions League qualifier that pits two Irish sides against each other.
And in an intriguing sub-plot, it will be former Celtic coach Damien Duff against ex- Rangers midfielder David Healy in the dugouts.

Duff led Shelbourne to an upset league title last season and they entered today's first qualifying round draw knowing there was a chance of an all-Irish derby against Linfield, the longstanding dominant force in Northern Irish football.

And so it's proved with the sides set to meet first in Dublin on Tuesday July 8 or Wednesday July 9 with the second leg at Windsor Park a week later.
It will be the second cross-border clash in a year with Shamrock facing Larne in the Conference League in October.
But the stakes are higher this time with the champions from both divisions facing in a qualifier for UEFA's top competition.
Linfield stormed to the Irish Premiership title last season as is the norm while Shelbourne upset the odds when they won the League of Ireland Premier Division under the tutelage of Duff, who previously served as a coach at Celtic Park.
The tie has huge financial implications for the team with the winner guaranteed at least two more Champions League qualifying matches – one of which at home.
It comes 20 years after the teams met in the inaugural all-Ireland Setanta Cup final, with Linfield triumphant at Tolka Park.

Trent Alexander-Arnold opens up on life at Real Madrid - as former Liverpool star pinpoints 'difference' in training ahead of Club World Cup

Trent Alexander-Arnold has opened up on his new life as a Real Madrid player as Los Blancos prepare to get their Club World Cup campaign underway. Alexander-Arnold, 26, was unveiled at Real last Thursday after joining the club upon the expiry of his Liverpool contract, although the Spanish giants paid £10million to secure his services a month early. The right back's future was a major talking point throughout the 2024-25 campaign, before he announced his decision to depart Anfield at the start of last month in a move that attracted significant anger from the Reds' fanbase. Alexander-Arnold has been training with Real at their base in Florida since last week ahead of their Club World Cup opener against Saudi giants Al-Hilal on Wednesday evening. And on Monday, the 26-year-old spoke for the first time about how he is adapting to life as a Galactico and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jnr. 'Hot to start with but a good session with some good things,' he told the club's website. '[It was] good to get a feel of the ball and a feel of the heat training in this climate so it was a good session. '[It was] high quality. The ball moves very fast. Obviously it's a lot different to what I'm used to in terms of the players and the style of play but it's good and I'm enjoying the change and I'm enjoying being a part of it. It feels really good and I'm happy to be here to be honest.' Prior to his unveiling as a Real player at the Bernabeu last week, Alexander-Arnold embarked on a tour of the club's facilities, where he was even shown some of the club's recent Champions League trophies. During his presentation, the defender then left onlookers impressed as he spoke in Spanish and on Monday he admitted he appreciated the effort his new team-mates are making in terms of communicating on the pitch. 'I can't say enough about the lads and how they made me feel welcome and at home,' he added. 'They've all put in a lot of effort, spoken to me, made me feel comfortable and made sure any questions I had - especially with the translations and things - they've helped me a lot with everything. 'I can't thank them enough and now we're excited for the game to start.' Alexander-Arnold, who will be simply known as 'Trent' with the Spanish giants, has taken the No 12 shirt after signing a six-year deal. But Alexander-Arnold also admitted training with Real was a 'lot different' to what he is used to After their opening clash against Al-Hilal, Real also face group games against Mexican side Pachuca and RB Salzburg. Meanwhile, speaking at his unveiling last week, Alexander-Arnold had said: 'Thank you Florentino Perez and the club for this opportunity. This doesn't happen every day. 'It's a dream come true. I'm very happy and proud to be here. I want to show Real Madrid fans how I play. 'I do realise I'm signing for Real Madrid and the demands are high but I am going to give my all for the team and Real Madrid fans. 'I want to show those fans how I play. I want to win many titles. I want to be a winner here and enjoy playing alongside the best players in the world at Madrid.'

We have the draw coming up here as we are about to discover who Larne and Cliftonville will get in the Conference League! Just the technicals to get through first. Today 01:45 PM When are the matches? The first leg will be on July 10, with the return fixture a week later on July 17. Today 01:30 PM How will this draw work? In short, very differently to the Champions League draw. Each Group is split into eight teams, four seeded and four unseeded. Each team is assigned a number within each Group - for instance, Larne are No.3 in Group 4 and Cliftonville are No.5 in Group 5. Rather than draw each individual group, which would take a lifetime, all eight groups will be drawn at once by having eight individually numbered balls placed in a bowl and drawn two at a time to create each tie, with the team drawn first at home in the first leg. So, for instance, if ball No.3 was drawn first followed by ball No.5, then every team assigned No.3 in each Group would play each team assigned No.5 in the same Group, with team No.3 hosting the first leg. Hopefully that clears things up! Today 01:15 PM Who can Larne and Cliftonville play? LARNE: Penybont FC (Wales), Valur (Iceland), SJK Seinäjoki (Finland), FK Auda (Latvia) CLIFTONVILLE: Víkingur Reykjavík (Iceland), FK Partizani (Albania), Floriana FC (Malta), St Joseph's FC (Gibraltar) Today 12:20 PM Break time for us! That's the Champions League draw completed with Linfield knowing their opponents - we're going to take a break until Larne and Cliftonville find out their opponents for the Conference League first qualifying round at 3pm. See you then! Today 12:18 PM No luck Linfield and Shelbourne are not drawn out of the hat. So the loser of that tie will go into the second qualifying round for the Europa League. Today 12:18 PM Bonus draw Due to the uneven number of teams in the competition, there is a secondary draw to determine which team that loses their tie will go into the third qualifying round for the Europa League as opposed to the second. Today 12:17 PM What a draw! We knew it was a possibility but that's a massive tie for Linfield against Damien Duff's Shelbourne! A massive cross-border derby to look forward to. Is that the one that they would have wanted? Today 12:12 PM BREAKING | Linfield to face Shelbourne in the Champions League first qualifying round The first leg will be at Tolka Park on July 8/9, with the return leg at Windsor Park on July 15/16. Today 12:10 PM Time for Group 2! Linfield's time to shine! Will it be a local draw against Shelbourne? Today 12:06 PM Technical side done Here comes the draw. We start with Group 1, with Linfield awaiting in Group 2. No teams for us to bother ourselves with in Group 1. Today 12:00 PM Here we go! The draw is just about to get under way. We do have a bit of time to kill while the draw procedure is explained but we're about to find out Linfield's opponents! Today 11:45 AM Linfield out to follow Larne blueprint and reach League Phase in Europe… or go even further, insists Ethan McGee Linfield title winner Ethan McGee says they will be all guns blazing to replicate Larne's history-making success in Europe. Today 11:30 AM When are the matches? The first leg will be on the 8/9 July, with the return leg a week later on the 15/16 July. Today 11:15 AM How will the draw work? The Champions League draw is fairly straightforward, the balls containing the seeded teams in each pot will go into one bowl and the balls containing the unseeded teams will go into another. One ball will be drawn from each pot and that will determine which teams will meet in the first qualifying round. So no having to work out who is in position 1 or position 2 or anything like that, it will be announced clear as day who Linfield will be facing. As for which team will host which leg, before the two teams are revealed the two balls will be placed in a central bowl and whichever team is drawn first will host the first leg.
