Princess Diana's Letter Two Days After Her Wedding Reveals Early Issues in Marriage To King Charles
A letter Princess Diana sent two days after marrying King Charles III in 1981 speaks volumes about the early stages of their marriage.
The letter is one of 300 pieces available for auction by Julien's Auctions. The extraordinary collection, Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection, is one of the largest auctions of items that once belonged to the late Princess of Wales in history.

Dated July 31, 1981, the letter is from Diana to Mark Simpson, a footman at Buckingham Palace, whom she appears to be thanking for helping her early transition into life in the Royal Family.
The letter reads, 'Dear Mark, I just wanted to thank you for all your kindness + patience you've showed towards me since I moved into B.P. My stay was made so much easier by your company as it was so terribly lonely + we had so many laughs for that I can't thank you enough. Do hope you were able to enjoy Wednesday + that you liked my dress? I'm off to Britainia tomorrow, what with all those men around. I will have to keep a watchful eye on Evelyn! The bad news is that I haven't eaten any cereal — sob. How am I going to cope without my bowls of cereal….[smiley face]. A large thank you for being you — Much love, Diana.'
Just days after marrying the then-prince in a lavish London ceremony that was watched by upwards of 700 million people around the world, Diana makes no mention of her new husband and instead discusses feeling 'terribly lonely' in her new home.
'It's like a couple of days after she got married. She'd been living in Buckingham Palace as she was transitioning from being a normal person to being a royal and the future queen,' Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien's Auction, told People about the letter.
'So she had to learn from the Queen Mother and the Queen about curtsying and all that. But she had fun with Mark Simpson, the footman. And he was about the same age, a little bit older than her,' Nolan adds. 'And she talks here, it speaks of how she was lonely when she was in the palace.'
The letter shows early signs of distance between Diana, who turned 20 weeks before her wedding, and her 32-year-old husband Charles.
The couple would go on to welcome sons William and Harry in 1982 and 1984, respectively, before separating in 1992.Best of SheKnows

Reform UK cost-cutting unit to scrutinise council
Lancashire County Council is being scrutinised by a team from Reform UK which has modelled itself on Elon Musk's controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the US. Council leader Stephen Atkinson said the group - made up of software engineers, data analysts and forensic auditors - will help to root out wasteful spending so they can reinvest in frontline services. Reform UK said the work will be carried out free of charge and will not be a drain on the council's budget. However, Unions have warned the cost-cutting unit it will face a fight if it suggests sacking staff at the Reform-controlled authority. The party, which took control in May, hopes the DOGE-style audit will revitalise the council, which employs 32,500 people. Atkinson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "It's important that we work collaboratively with our officers to look at the efficiencies that can be achieved and we are committed to doing this. "We are confident we can deliver the savings and are well underway with the analysis. We expect the initial findings to be available over the next few weeks. "We have been clear that we will be focusing our policies on what is most important to residents so we can make a real difference." Party leader Nigel Farage has said people working within Reform-controlled councils on climate change and diversity projects should should seek "alternative careers". Asked if such staff in Lancashire should fear for their jobs, Atkinson said: "Staff know what our policies are – we will follow process, we will be respectful and we will be dignified, but we have an electoral mandate to deliver what we said we would do." Union leaders said they were sceptical of the plan. Mike Short, head of local government at UNISON, said: "Reform's auditors will find the cupboards are bare. "People living in Reform-controlled local authorities want to know the vital services they rely upon will continue. That should be new councillors' top priority." Pete Billington, secretary of the Lancashire Association of Trades Union Councils, said the hundreds of millions of pounds saved during more than a decade of austerity rendered the DOGE process in Lancashire "meaningless". He added: "The only way they're going to [achieve their aim] is by sacking people and cutting services. "I just can't see the unions taking any attempt to cut employment without a massive fight."
