Castle Howard rooms damaged in 1940 fire reopen to public
Rooms damaged by a fire 80 years ago at a country estate have been restored and reopened to the public.Castle Howard in North Yorkshire unveiled the revamped Tapestry Drawing Room, Gallery and Grand Staircase as part of its 21st Century Renaissance project.The rooms were damaged in 1940 during a suspected chimney fire, which swept through nearly a whole wing of the building.Nicholas Howard, who runs the estate with his wife Victoria, said that rebuilding the Tapestry Drawing Room around the pieces that were woven to hang there was like "making a suit to match the buttons".
Stately home Castle Howard is a private residence and has been home to the Howard family for more than 300 years.The fire destroyed the building's dome and more than 20 rooms in the house while it was being used as a school for girls during the Second World War.The dome was restored in 1962 and the filming of Brideshead Revisited at the site helped pay for the reconstruction of the the Garden Hall and New Library.Before the latest work was carried out, the tapestry room was a shell with a hole in the wall where the fireplace had been.The four tapestries which were woven for the room in 1706 by John Vanderbank and depict the four seasons have now been returned to their original positions.
Eleanor Brooke-Peat, curator of collections and archives, said the tapestries revealed information about the original home."This would have been a house filled with colour," she said."We know from some very early visitor accounts to the house in the early 18th Century that people were really blown away by that." Speaking about the newly reopened rooms, Victoria Howard said: "Ironically, we're hoping that people who've never been to the house before will just see them as part of the house because we want it to look as though it has always been here."

She discussed the topic in her podcast series Do I Want Kids? last year and admitted her indecision was difficult. 'I felt ashamed about it,' she told ELLE magazine at the time. 'We live in this prenatal society, which basically means that in the society we live in, there is the assumption that we will have children. 'I blinked and all my friends went from talking about contraception to being pregnant or having kids. And I started to feel like, what is wrong with me?' In 2023, Laura said she had become concerned about time 'running out' to start a family but was 'afraid to have a baby'. 'I may have checked off some "societal successes", but as I'm approaching my 31st birthday, the hardest thing I'm having to confront is the inescapable biological reality that my fertility is decreasing with age. And I know I'm not alone' she wrote in a column for Marie Claire. It comes after Laura's husband Dalton revealed why he decided to take her last name after the pair tied the knot in 2021. During an Instagram Q&A, one fan asked the Keep it Cleaner co-founder why he changed his surname. 'Why did Dalton change his last name?' Laura then shared a video of Dalton explaining that he had always been open to the idea. 'The core reason why, is that it was always a conversation for me and it always has been,' he said. 'Nothing has ever been assumed as I was growing up, regardless of growing up in what would be a traditional woman taking the man's surname environment or family.' He continued: 'In this case it was always a conversation and that lead to me taking Laura's name.' Dalton also explained his choice after the couple's wedding in 2021. He wrote on Instagram at the time: 'You can still call me Dalton, Dalt, Dolphin, whatever you like… I'm still the same me and always will be. 'I'm just going to sign off one chapter and start another with my beautiful, driven and inspirational wife by my side as Mr Henshaw.' While Dalton's decision to break with tradition seems to be his way of expressing love and respect for his wife, he also hinted he didn't like his surname Graham.

Rose's wild posts first came in response to a thread post that asked: 'Who is a celebrity that gave it all up at the height of fame to go live a "normal" life?' 'Hi. We just leave when people try to kill us. When we are illegally debanked and [redacted]. Hope that helps,' Rose answered. 'Debanking' refers to a bank terminating a customer's accounts or restricting access to banking services due to perceived risks. Rose responded to one concerned fan to let them know she'd had no suicidal thoughts of any kind 'thank you for asking'. 'In fact I am moving house every few weeks, countries every few months and trying desperately to stay alive until my book is finished and released,' Rose, who is currently writing a tell-all memoir, responded. 'If you're truly being followed and targeted, staying put is dangerous. You need to move ideally to another country, where you can be safe and off the radar,' another person told Rose. 'Trust no one unless you're absolutely sure of them. Change your routine completely. This isn't about fear, it's about survival. Your safety comes first act now!' Rose, who has recently been splitting her time between the US and Australia following the death of her father just before Christmas, responded: 'Already done.'
