Castle Howard rooms damaged in 1940 fire reopen to public
Rooms damaged by a fire 80 years ago at a country estate have been restored and reopened to the public.Castle Howard in North Yorkshire unveiled the revamped Tapestry Drawing Room, Gallery and Grand Staircase as part of its 21st Century Renaissance project. The rooms were damaged in 1940 during a suspected chimney fire, which swept through nearly a whole wing of the building.Nicholas Howard, who runs the estate with his wife Victoria, said that rebuilding the Tapestry Drawing Room around the pieces that were woven to hang there was like "making a suit to match the buttons".
Stately home Castle Howard is a private residence and has been home to the Howard family for more than 300 years. The fire destroyed the building's dome and more than 20 rooms in the house while it was being used as a school for girls during the Second World War.The dome was restored in 1962 and the filming of Brideshead Revisited at the site helped pay for the reconstruction of the the Garden Hall and New Library. Before the latest work was carried out, the tapestry room was a shell with a hole in the wall where the fireplace had been. The four tapestries which were woven for the room in 1706 by John Vanderbank and depict the four seasons have now been returned to their original positions.
Eleanor Brooke-Peat, curator of collections and archives, said the tapestries revealed information about the original home."This would have been a house filled with colour," she said."We know from some very early visitor accounts to the house in the early 18th Century that people were really blown away by that." Speaking about the newly reopened rooms, Victoria Howard said: "Ironically, we're hoping that people who've never been to the house before will just see them as part of the house because we want it to look as though it has always been here."

Podcaster Laura Henshaw announces she is expecting her first child with husband Dalton - after struggling with indecision about whether or not she wanted kids
Laura Henshaw is expecting her first child with husband Dalton. The Kic CEO shared the good news of her pregnancy with a video posted to Instagram on Thursday. The 33-year-old was shown laying on a table in a medical office while having an ultrasound. Laura beamed for the camera in the black and white clip while an image on screen showed her growing baby. The podcaster captioned her video, which was inundated with congratulations from friends and fans, with a simple love heart emoji. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Henshaw has been open about struggling with whether or not she wanted to have children. She discussed the topic in her podcast series Do I Want Kids? last year and admitted her indecision was difficult. 'I felt ashamed about it,' she told ELLE magazine at the time. 'We live in this prenatal society, which basically means that in the society we live in, there is the assumption that we will have children. 'I blinked and all my friends went from talking about contraception to being pregnant or having kids. And I started to feel like, what is wrong with me?' In 2023, Laura said she had become concerned about time 'running out' to start a family but was 'afraid to have a baby'. 'I may have checked off some "societal successes", but as I'm approaching my 31st birthday, the hardest thing I'm having to confront is the inescapable biological reality that my fertility is decreasing with age. And I know I'm not alone' she wrote in a column for Marie Claire. It comes after Laura's husband Dalton revealed why he decided to take her last name after the pair tied the knot in 2021. During an Instagram Q&A, one fan asked the Keep it Cleaner co-founder why he changed his surname. 'Why did Dalton change his last name?' Laura then shared a video of Dalton explaining that he had always been open to the idea. 'The core reason why, is that it was always a conversation for me and it always has been,' he said. 'Nothing has ever been assumed as I was growing up, regardless of growing up in what would be a traditional woman taking the man's surname environment or family.' He continued: 'In this case it was always a conversation and that lead to me taking Laura's name.' Dalton also explained his choice after the couple's wedding in 2021. He wrote on Instagram at the time: 'You can still call me Dalton, Dalt, Dolphin, whatever you like… I'm still the same me and always will be. 'I'm just going to sign off one chapter and start another with my beautiful, driven and inspirational wife by my side as Mr Henshaw.' While Dalton's decision to break with tradition seems to be his way of expressing love and respect for his wife, he also hinted he didn't like his surname Graham.

In January, Abbey announced she was expecting her first child, saying she and her husband were overjoyed, reported Herald Sun. Sharing the news with their family over Christmas first, Abbey went on to reveal she discovered she was pregnant after running the New York Marathon in November. 'As you can imagine, it was a bit of a shock given what I had just put my body through, but I'm in awe of what the human body can do,' she said. Nevertheless, Abbey said she and Keegan 'could not be happier to welcome our first child into the world, later this year'. 'We are so excited and grateful to be in this position, as we know how difficult it can be for so many people. We're on cloud nine and can't wait for this next chapter.' Abbey said the couple have been sharing their milestone news with as many people in person as possible, adding it's 'a really special time for us all'. She later shared a pregnancy announcement to Instagram, posting happy snaps of her growing baby bump taken by photographer Diana Brandt. The Seven star shared a heartfelt video capturing the moment she wiped away tears, overwhelmed by the achievement of completing the 42.2 kilometre challenge. 'Speechless. Proud,' she captioned the clip. 'The emotion on that finish line hit me reeeeaal hard. I am a marathon runner!' The path to the New York Marathon wasn't easy for Holmes. She had been juggling her on-screen commitments with Channel Seven, alongside marathon training. The lovers married in November 2023 in a stunning ceremony at Uluru in the Northern Territory. They wed in front of about 100 friends and family, including Abbey's Seven commentary colleagues Luke Hodge and Brian Taylor.

Ruby Rose praises goats for saving her life - after a string of bizarre claims about her living conditions
Ruby Rose has praised the baby goats - and one lamb - at a horse sanctuary for saving her life when she found it too difficult 'to go on'. The Aussie actor, 39, has been staying at Horse Shepherd Equine Sanctuary in Victoria, after claiming she had to move because she was being 'followed'. She has shared several clips of her visit to Instagram, with one video on Tuesday revealing how some of the animals have helped her through some difficult times. Rose uploaded a video which showed her lying in bed while two lambs attempted to hop into bed with her. As the Batwoman star encouraged them to jump up, Rose captioned the clip with some bittersweet words. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Forever indebted to Snoop, Martha and Bart,' she began - Snoop and Martha are baby goats, while Bar14800109t is a lamb. Rose also sang her praises to 'the incredible Anne' Young, who is a member on the board of Horse Shepherd Equine Sanctuary. 'Whenever my heart feels too broken to go on, I am stitched together by @horse_shepherd,' she added. Rose re-emerged at the horse sanctuary in Gordon this week after telling fans she has had to 'move house every few weeks' because she is being 'followed'. The Australian actor, 39, shared videos to Instagram on Monday, showing herself playing with goats at Horse Shepherd Equine Sanctuary. Daily Mail Australia can reveal the movie star stays at the ranch for a few days at a time to visit the animals when she is in the area. Rose tagged the sanctuary in her videos and even urged her 20.1 million followers to donate to the business, which is committed to 'equine rescue and rehabilitation'. In the clips, Rose featured two baby goats named Martha and Snoop, who she has previously revealed lost their mother. The Aussie star appeared to be quite taken with the animals as she fed them, walked with them around the sanctuary, and cuddled up to them in her videos. It comes after Rose shared a series of troubling posts to Threads last week, claiming someone is following her and trying to kill her. One of the posts raised concerns among fans when she made an eyebrow-raising remark about one of Jeffrey Epstein's accusers Virginia Giuffre. Giuffre recently took her own life after claiming they had been in a devastating car accident that was later revealed to be a minor prang. Rose's wild posts first came in response to a thread post that asked: 'Who is a celebrity that gave it all up at the height of fame to go live a "normal" life?' 'Hi. We just leave when people try to kill us. When we are illegally debanked and [redacted]. Hope that helps,' Rose answered. 'Debanking' refers to a bank terminating a customer's accounts or restricting access to banking services due to perceived risks. This may happen for a number of reasons, including a perceived risk of money laundering, non-compliant customer activities, or a perceived reputational risk. Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting Rose was debanked for any of these reasons. It is unclear if Rose was actually debanked or if she was referring to someone else's plight. Rose then went on to say: 'I don't want to be labelled "crazy" and I don't want to pretend to know how Virginia Giuffre died - but DOZENS of people including a school bus, have tried to run me off the road in the last few years.' Giuffre was one of the most outspoken accusers of convicted sex offenders Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. She died by suicide at age 41 at her farm outside Perth, Australia, on Thursday, April 24. Rose claimed: 'I have been followed almost every time I leave my home, since the day I broke my neck, back and ribs on Batwoman' - referring to her controversial exit from the TV series after she sustained injuries on-set. 'Since then I have doubled down on.... Epstein. This has resulted in some seriously wild attempts on my life. Believe it or don't. But I might as well update you.' Rose, who uses they/them pronouns also wrote, 'This,' beneath someone else's comment on the thread which read: 'Y'all they "left" bc it's a horrifying industry that is NOT safe.' Fans flocked to comments beneath Rose's Threads post, begging the star to 'stay safe and keep speaking out'. Rose responded to one concerned fan to let them know she'd had no suicidal thoughts of any kind 'thank you for asking'. 'In fact I am moving house every few weeks, countries every few months and trying desperately to stay alive until my book is finished and released,' Rose, who is currently writing a tell-all memoir, responded. 'If you're truly being followed and targeted, staying put is dangerous. You need to move ideally to another country, where you can be safe and off the radar,' another person told Rose. 'Trust no one unless you're absolutely sure of them. Change your routine completely. This isn't about fear, it's about survival. Your safety comes first act now!' Rose, who has recently been splitting her time between the US and Australia following the death of her father just before Christmas, responded: 'Already done.'
