Landmark 1851 ‘trophy home' Newtown Brae commands top dollar

News.com.au23-04-2025

A grand Victorian mansion considered one of Geelong's most significant early homes has hit the market for the first time in 20 years.
The downsizing owner of Newtown Brae is selling the extraordinary four-bedroom house originally built for former convict turned prominent publican Joseph Lewis at 15 Stephen St, Newtown.
The front cottage was constructed in 1851, making it one of the city's oldest surviving homes, with the substantial two-storey Italianate extension designed by notable architect Alexander Hamilton added in 1885.
It occupies an elevated 3407sq m block with treetop views across Geelong, the You Yangs and the bay.
Kay & Burton agent Peter Kudelka has set price hopes from $6.5m to $6.95m for the property, calling for expressions of interest by May 27.
If it achieves this price, the landmark home would eclipse the suburb record set by fellow 19th century mansion Raith.
Mr Kudelka said he expected strong interest in the 'trophy property' as so few of similar calibre existed.
'It was built in 1851 and renovated and extended in 1885 by a guy called Alexander Hamilton who is quite famous in the area,' he said.
'It has been in this family for 20 years and they are just at the stage now where they are scaling down.'
He said the owners had made sympathetic improvements to the heritage-listed home but there was still scope for new owners to make further changes internally.
'They added the front veranda in the early stages and they have just done some renovation work internally to bring it up to speed,' he said.
'Downstairs, for example, could be fully self-contained. It's got a little kitchenette, a bedroom and a living room so it gives you that flexibility but it's actually a comfortable family home.'
The bluestone lower level is also home to a library and a rustic cellar, a stark contrast from the stately reception rooms upstairs which display original decorative features such as marble fireplaces, ceiling roses, plasterwork and crystal chandeliers.
Mr Kudelka said two old posts on the expansive back lawn once held the net for a tennis court that could be reinstated.
Newtown Brae's original owner Joseph Lewis was transported to Van Diemen's Land for counterfeit offences and later became a successful publican in Geelong at the Shearer's Arms, Royal Mail and Victoria hotels.
When he advertised the three-bedroom cottage, then known as Woolmers, for rent in 1852, it was set on 1.6ha of garden with 400 fruit trees, vines and a gardener's house.
The Victorian Heritage Database citation shows Western District grazier James Alexander acquired the property in 1884, changing its name and engaging Colac architect Alexander Hamilton to extend it.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan now Australia's second-highest paid politician after pay rise

Premier Jacinta Allan is set to rake in a hefty half a million dollar salary, securing her position as Australia's second-highest paid politician. After a pay bump, the Victorian leader will pocket $512,972, trailing only Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's $620,000 pay cheque. The $14,941 pay rise comes after a decision by the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal to increase MP salaries and allowances by three per cent on Monday. The premier's package includes an expense allowance of $64,475. Deputy Premier Ben Carroll will soon be paid $236,662, while Opposition Leader Brad Battin will collect $409,107. Backbench MPs will have a base salary of $211.972. The increase is slightly below the 3.5 per cent pay rise set to take effect for minimum wage workers from Tuesday following the Fair Work Commission's annual review. Allan remains the highest paid state or territory leader, ahead of Queensland Premier David Crisafulli ($476,323) and NSW Premier Chris Minns ($416,440). Although, the wage for NSW MPs could rise in the coming weeks as a two-year salary freeze comes to an end. Minns could receive an additional $14,575, pushing his salary to roughly $431,015, if a proposed 3.5 per cent pay rise goes ahead. NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro is the lowest paid state or territory leader. But things are looking up for Country Liberal Party boss after her base salary jumped more than $16,000 to $350,000 at the start of 2025. Meanwhile, the base pay for NT MPs went from $166,763 to $175,000, equating to an increase of almost 5 per cent. The steep uptick followed politicians and public servants' wages being frozen for several years under the former NT Labor government. Tasmanian politicians are set to receive a $30,000 increase in their base salary after a determination by Tasmania's Industrial Commission. Premier Jeremy Rockliff ruled out the 22 per cent pay rise for politicians on June 9, which will see his own salary increase from $301,397 to $368,783. But the pay rise will proceed from Tuesday, as parliament was dissolved before any move to disallow it could be made. If re-elected, Rockliff has pledged to overturn the increase. The pay cheques of Australian politicians compare fairly well to the rest of the world. In the US, President Donald Trump reportedly earns $US400,000 ($A617,000). Meanwhile, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong remains the world's highest-paid government leader, reportedly collecting $S2.2 million ($A2.5 million) last year.

Andrew Robets' Roberts Co avoids liquidation with $20m deal

Don't miss out on the headlines from Business. Followed categories will be added to My News. Tycoon Andrew Roberts has struck a deal with creditors of his collapsed building empire that will see him fork out $20m. But administrators say there are still subcontractor claims yet to be resolved for the construction firm's Victorian arm, as they look to work out how to mitigate losses for stalled projects across the state. Creditors of Mr Roberts' RCAH Group – a construction company specialising in delivering complex projects across various sectors, including health, education, and commercial development – voted on Monday to accept the deal. The operations of the RCAH Group, which collapsed into administration in May, have recently been wound down and its Victorian subsidiary, Roberts Co (VIC), was placed into administration in March. The company's most notable contracts are in Victoria, including an Amazon distribution centre in Craigieburn, an office tower near Parliament Station and a residential development project in Footscray. The group also recently sold its business interests in Western Australia and separately sold Roberts Co (NSW), its New South Wales business to United Arab Emirates developer Arada in May. Creditors of Roberts Co (VIC) separately agreed at a meeting on Monday to accept a plan for the Victorian arm on Monday. The deal, which was proposed by the group's ultimate shareholders Martigues – another Roberts-controlled entity – will see an extra $17.4m be made available, in addition to $2.6m he has already paid. A spokesperson for FTI Consulting, who were appointed to the RCAH Group collapse, said the deal will also see the 'forgiveness of significant related entity loans, which will improve the outcome to creditors of the group'. They said former employees will receive all of their entitlements in full and unsecured creditors would receive up to 33c on the dollar, with smaller creditors expected to be paid in full. 'The (deal will) see the former employees and creditors of the companies secure a better outcome and provides greater certainty than had the group been placed into liquidation,' the spokesperson said. FTI Consulting administrator Vaughan Strawbridge said his firm had worked closely with the administrators of Roberts Co (VIC), McGrathNicol, to wade through 'issues in the group'. 'There is still a lot of work for McGrathNicol to undertake in resolving subcontractor claims and mitigating losses under contracts in Victoria, but this is a significant contribution to the payment of creditors that has been secured,' Mr Strawbridge said. Mr Roberts, who is the son of Multiplex founder John Roberts, called in the administrators to his company's Victorian arm in the wake of major projects blowing out in Melbourne. Roberts Co (VIC) cited project losses, including on the construction of an Amazon centre, and the withdrawal of financial support from related companies as the main contributors to its collapse.
