The rapid expansion of online retailers Amazon and Flipkart in the crowded quick commerce sector is pushing discounting across platforms to record highs in an industry battling accelerating losses. As price becomes the primary differentiator for these apps with near similar user experience, intense discounting and attendant cash burn are likely to intensify further, according to multiple people in the know .This month, average discounts across categories rose to 20–25% on maximum retail price compared to below 10% two years ago across various quick commerce platforms, including for segments like dairy and groceries, the sources said."Rising competition is the reason for increasing discounts within quick commerce, today there are eight players," Karan Taurani, executive vice president at Elara Capital.'Today there are eight players, unless we see a convergence towards four-five players, this kind of discounting will persist. We had only 3-4 players earlier but now we are seeing the entry of more players including Flipkart and Amazon…I think discounting will persist for some time until the competitive intensity cools off,' Taurani added. In addition to market leaders Blinkit Zepto and Swiggy 's Instamart , others such as Reliance Retail's JioMart, Flipkart Minutes and Amazon Now have also started building a presence in this space.Analysts are of the view that discounts are the highest in the personal care category rising to around 35% discounts on maximum retail price. Other products such as packaged foods, basic staples, home care, beverages also are discounted heavily. 'Dairy has the lowest discount (5%), understandable given it is a lowmargin category and hence, there is limited headroom. Prices vary significantly across players in fresh fruits & vegetables too, albeit we do not include it in our basket due to potential variations in product quality,' said a note by Jefferies.Industry executives point out that with all competing firms being well-capitalised they are not focusing on profitability in the short term. ET had reported in February that the monthly burn for the quick commerce sector across companies had increased to Rs 1,300-1,500 crore – more than doubling in a few months. Burn refers to the rate at which a company spends cash. For the quarter ended March 31, Blinkit parent Eternal saw its net profit plummeting to Rs 39 crore from Rs 175 crore in the year ago period. Its Bengalurubased rival Swiggy's net loss for the quarter nearly doubled to Rs 1,081 crore. Both the companies increased spending on expanding their quick commerce businesses.'There is a massive headroom for growth in quick commerce…and the overall market is expanding as well. The attempt right now is to build a sticky customer base. A lot of effort is also going into building for tier-II and tier-III cities, where platforms are trying to get consumers to try quick commerce for the first time,' a senior quick commerce executive said.Brokerage firm Morgan Stanley estimates the size of India's quick commerce sector at $8 billion in 2024, estimating it to expand to $28 billion by 2026 and $57 billion by 2030.Walmart-owned Flipkart's Minutes, which currently has around 400 dark stores aims to expand its network to 800 micro warehouses for 10-minute deliveries by the end of this year. ET reported on June 13 that Amazon Now has gone live in select pincodes in Bengaluru with 10-15 dark stores on its network, and aims to expand to other cities such as Mumbai and Delhi-NCR as well. Early movers Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart are also expanding their footprint.Notably, during the company's quarterly earnings call in May, Akshant Goyal, CFO of Blinkit's parent Eternal, said the quick commerce platform will prioritise market share gain even at the cost of short-term profitability. As per the Jefferies report, average discounts were also higher on bulk-buy offerings from companies like Zepto and Instamart, which operate the Super Saver and Maxxsaver programmes, respectively. Under these offerings, platforms offer greater discounts to users with larger basket sizes – typically over Rs 1,000. For the 10-minute delivery platforms, this results in cost savings in terms of fewer trips and reduced packaging expenses, while also increasing competitiveness with value retailers such as Dmart.

The ill-fated aircraft struck the BJ Medical College's Atulyam hostel complex during lunch hour, reducing student residences and the dining hall to rubble. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 787-8(AI 171) and another 29 persons, including five MBBS students, on the ground were killed when the London-bound aircraft crashed, moments after it took off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) As someone who had lived in similar hostels during his medical education at Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore and Sri Ramachandra Medical College in Chennai, the images struck a chord, he said. Live Events "I saw the footage from the mess and the hostel, and it truly shook me. It reminded me of the places I once called home, the corridors, the beds, the laughter, the pressure of exams, and the anticipation of a call from family," he said. "No one expects a commercial aircraft to come crashing into that world," he added. "Those students started the day thinking about lectures, assignments, and patients. Their lives ended in a way none of us could ever imagine. It hit close. Too close," he said. Dr Shamsheer's relief package includes Rs 1 crore for each of the four deceased students' families, Rs 20 lakh each for five seriously injured students, and Rs 20 lakh each for the families of doctors who lost loved ones. The financial assistance will be delivered in coordination with the Junior Doctors' Association at BJ Medical College, ensuring that those in need receive support swiftly. This is not the first time Dr Shamsheer has responded to such a crisis. In 2010, following the Mangalore air crash, he provided financial assistance and employment opportunities to affected families at Burjeel Holdings, a leading healthcare provider in the Middle East.

Mercedes-Benz hints at further price hike in September

German-luxury car brand Mercedes-Benz India has indicated a further price increase for its cars from September, citing adverse fluctuation of Euro against the Indian Rupee, a top official said here on Monday. The company already revised its prices by 1.5 per cent, each in January and June this year, Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer said. "If you see, yesterday night, one Euro is equal to Rs 99 and it is the first time that Euro has breached the Rs 98 mark. We had priced our cars (when One EURO) was at Rs 89-90. With Euro going up, even though we localise more than 30 per cent of our cars, 70 per cent of the cars still have European content and when the EURO goes up (against Rupee), the price (of Mercedes-Benz range of cars) will go up," he told reporters. Up to 1.5 per cent was the increase in hike. "And the third one (increase in price) equal to 1.5 per cent will come in September, because we cannot pass this in one go and we are doing it in phase wise," he said. Live Events Despite the proposal to increase the price of cars, Iyer sounded optimistic on retail sales with the Reserve Bank of India announcing interest rate cuts twice this year. "We have non-banking finance company, Mercedes-Benz Finance and this arm has also reduced the interest rates. About 80 per cent of our cars are financed and today, if you look at June, the price of cars (of Mercedes-Benz) has gone up. But the EMIs remain the same." he said. He added that the interest rate cuts announced by the Reserve Bank is helping the sales of Mercedes-Benz range of cars for sure. "I think these are pros and cons. So this year, it is not an easy year from a geo-political macro economy environment and therefore, we want to be a big conservative when we also talk about demand and forecast (for Mercedes-Benz)", he said, responding to a query. "Right now, we had an excellent May (in terms of Sales) and June also seems to be strong and hopefully, during the festive period, we will bring back even more cheer (in terms of sales for his company)" Iyer said. Mercedes-Benz declares its sales performance every quarter and the details of the sales are expected to be released in July, he said. Iyer and top officials of Mercedes-Benz India and Sundaram Motors Executive Director Sharath Vijayaraghavan were here at the launch of top-end luxury experience store in Adyar which has been inaugurated as part of the company's networking strategy. Iyer said Mercedes-Benz intends to open 30 such showrooms, which includes upgrading the existing facilities and also setting up new outlets this year in new locations. "This is the 11th such facility. We will be opening 19 more in the next 5 months. These provide Atelier Experience to customers which offers upgraded infrastructure, technology and an exclusive personalisation corner to customers," he said. After the highly exclusive Maybach Lounge set up in Hyderabad, G-Lounge in Delhi, Mercedes-Benz introduces the bespoke 'Atelier Experience' in Mumbai and Chennai where discerning customers can configure their cars with a range of customisation options, he noted. Hyper-personalisation is an emerging trend at the top-end luxury segment. "I think the Atelier Experience is a new step in what we are trying to do in the luxury space. Taking care of top end customer." he said. With the Atelier Experience, Mercedes-Benz has gone more 'boutique' and the focus is more on top-end vehicle customers like Maybach, AMG, he said and added that over a period of time, Mercedes-Benz India would shift its current 100 touch points to new format stores in future considering the expectation from a customer. Delhi government's dust pollution mitigation project to cost over Rs 2,000 crore

The Delhi government's comprehensive road dust pollution mitigation project is likely to cost Rs 2,388 crore over a period of 10 years, according to a proposal approved by the Cabinet. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had last month headed a meeting of the Cabinet, which approved a 'Pollution Control and Emergency Measures' project under which 250 water sprinkler machines fitted with anti-smog guns will be hired at an estimated cost of Rs 1,158 crore. Besides, 70 mechanical road sweeping ( MRS ) machines fitted with 210 water sprinklers, water tankers and anti-smog guns will be hired at the cost Rs 1,230 crore for a period of seven years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dhoni's Exclusive Home Interior Choice? HomeLane Get Quote Undo One of these MRS machines was launched by the chief minister along with Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. The Public Works Department (PWD), which has been providing facilities for mechanically sweeping and sprinkling water on roads under its jurisdiction for the entire year except during the monsoon season, will execute this project, said officials. Live Events "This project is only for cleaning of dust in the carriageway, excluding cleaning of footpaths and greening of central verges. The machines under this project may be utilized in Delhi on a need basis for overall improvement of the city's ambient air quality," said the minutes of the meeting. The efficiency of mechanical sweeping has been reported as 55 per cent effective in reducing PM-10 concentration in the air and it increases to 90 per cent efficacy if assisted by vacuum-assisted sweeping, according to a study done by IIT Kanpur in 2016. The officials said that a similar plan was proposed last year by the Environment Department to hand over the work of dust suppression on main roads to the PWD. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi ( MCD ), however, objected to the proposal stating it will execute the project as sanitation is its obligatory function, they added. The officials said that the project was transferred to the MCD and added no funds were, however, spent. "Hence, it has been decided with the approval of the chief minister and the environment minister that the project has faced considerable delays and given the importance of the project, the department has been directed to revise the Cabinet note for getting the work executed by the PWD," said the approved proposal. The entire fleet will daily work in three shifts of eight hours each to execute the project efficiently, according to the plan, and the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will provide 15,000 kiloliters of treated water per day free of cost to the PWD to operate water sprinklers and anti-smog guns. The PWD manages 1,400 kilometres of main roads across the city. These roads, which witness substantial traffic movement, will initially be covered under this project with a scope for expansion to other roads.
