
May was world's second-hottest on record, EU scientists say
BRUSSELS, June 11 (Reuters) - The world experienced its second-warmest May since records began this year, a month in which climate change fuelled a record-breaking heatwave in Greenland, scientists said on Wednesday.
Last month was Earth's second-warmest May on record - exceeded only by May 2024 - rounding out the northern hemisphere's second-hottest March-May spring on record, the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said in a monthly bulletin.
Global surface temperatures last month averaged 1.4 degrees Celsius higher than in the 1850-1900 pre-industrial period, when humans began burning fossil fuels on an industrial scale, C3S said.
That broke a run of extraordinary heat, in which 21 of the last 22 months had an average global temperature exceeding 1.5C above pre-industrial times - although scientists warned this break was unlikely to last.
"Whilst this may offer a brief respite for the planet, we do expect the 1.5C threshold to be exceeded again in the near future due to the continued warming of the climate system," said C3S director Carlo Buontempo.
The main cause of climate change is greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels. Last year, opens new tab was the planet's hottest on record.
A separate study, published by the World Weather Attribution group of climate scientists on Wednesday, found that human-caused climate change made a record-breaking heatwave in Iceland and Greenland last month about 3C hotter than it otherwise would have been - contributing to a huge additional melting of Greenland's ice sheet.
"Even cold-climate countries are experiencing unprecedented temperatures," said Sarah Kew, study co-author and researcher at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute.
The global threshold of 1.5C is the limit of warming which countries vowed under the Paris climate agreement to try to prevent, to avoid the worst consequences of warming.
The world has not yet technically breached that target - which refers to an average global temperature of 1.5C over decades.
However, some scientists have said it can no longer realistically be met, and have urged governments to cut CO2 emissions faster, to limit the overshoot and the fuelling of extreme weather.
C3S's records go back to 1940, and are cross-checked with global temperature records going back to 1850.

Oceans have absorbed enough heat since the Paris Agreement was signed to match the energy of 1.7 billion atomic bomb explosions, scientists warned just as the UN Ocean Conference got underway in Nice. The figures were shared by researchers on the sidelines of the summit where delegations from countries were working to create a global treaty for ocean conservation. Scientists said warming was accelerating changes in marine systems, driving sea level rise, sea ice loss, and increasing marine heatwaves. 'Global warming over the last 10 years equates to about 1.7 billion atomic bomb explosions,' said Alex Sen Gupta, associate professor at the University of New South Wales. 'If we divide this by the number of seconds in 10 years, it's equivalent to about five atomic explosions worth of energy every single second. Clearly this is having an effect on the ocean – it is causing the sea level to rise, our ice systems to melt, and our atmosphere and oceans to warm.' As the conference opened on Monday, UN secretary general António Guterres said the world 'must move from plunder to protection to save the oceans'. Among the most serious warnings are new records set for sea surface temperatures this year, an all-time low for global sea ice, and what scientists say is the largest coral bleaching event ever recorded, affecting 84 per cent of monitored reef areas. 'My recent research has shown that marine heatwaves have caused severe impacts globally over the past few years,' said Dr Kathryn E Smith of the Marine Biological Association of the UK. 'We've seen more fisheries collapses, mass mortality events, and damage to ecosystems. The warming oceans have also fuelled storms on land causing billions of dollars in damages and resulting in thousands of deaths. These impacts have all occurred before we have reached the 1.5 C benchmark. A decade on from the Paris Agreement it is clear that it's even more important than ever that we make every effort not to exceed the warming limits agreed in 2015.' The UN Ocean Conference is co-hosted this year by France and Costa Rica, with participation from over 100 countries. It aims to accelerate action to meet global ocean protection targets and finalise voluntary commitments on issues including pollution, overfishing, deep-sea mining and marine biodiversity. France's president Emmanuel Macron said the High Seas Treaty could come into force as early as January 2026. Eighteen countries ratified the treaty during the opening sessions, bringing the total to 49 – just 11 short of the number needed for adoption. Mr Macron also reiterated France's call for a moratorium on deep-sea mining, declaring the "oceans are not for sale". Several experts at the Nice conference said ocean protection must now move from pledges to policies. The conference is expected to issue the 'Nice Ocean Action Plan' and press for the legally binding entry into force of the High Seas Treaty. The UK, which had faced criticism for delays, said it would introduce legislation by the end of the year to ratify the High Seas Treaty. 'Our oceans are dying. Without urgent action, they will be irreversibly destroyed,' marine minister Emma Hardy said. ' Climate change is pushing our ocean into unknown territory, causing collapse and irreparable damage to many valuable ecosystems and marine species,' Dr Karen Filbee-Dexter from the University of Western Australia noted. 'What is most concerning is our emissions have already locked us into impacts that will be felt for generations.' Dr Jennifer Francis, senior scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Centre, said sea ice loss in the Arctic was one of the clearest indicators of climate disruption. 'During summer, the real estate it covers has diminished by nearly half and its volume by nearly three-quarters in less than a human's lifespan,' she said. 'The loss of ice means ships can now travel more freely along polar routes, with economic benefits but higher risks of fuel spills. Larger areas of open water allow marine algae to proliferate in abnormal ways.' A final political declaration and the Nice Ocean Action Plan are expected at the end of the summit on Friday. Scientists, small island leaders and civil society groups are calling for stronger integration between climate policy and marine conservation efforts. 'Ultimately, the vast majority of ocean impacts that we have seen in the last decade are a result of human induced climate change,' Dr Smith said. 'The escalation of impacts we are seeing is, quite frankly, shocking and without reducing emissions and use of fossil fuels globally, the impacts we see are only going to increase further in coming years.'

Archaeologists uncover fast food ancient Romans frequently snacked on
Commoners in the Roman Empire frequently snacked on inexpensive fried songbirds at roadside shops, archaeologists said after analysing an ancient trash pit in Spain. Such fast-food joints, known as popinae and tabernae, frequently served fried small thrushes, once considered a luxury dish, according to a new study published in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology. Researchers analysed animal bones found at a cesspit in the ancient Spanish city of Pollentia and dated to between the first century BC and the first century AD. During this time, the ancient city expanded quickly to become an active port with a forum, temples, cemeteries, and several roadside shops called popina serving snacks and wine. Archaeologists excavated a trash pit at a commercial area linked to a forum and a network of food shops via underground drainage. The cesspit was found to include remains of mammals, fish, reptiles, and birds, of which thrushes were 'most abundant', researchers said. They found 165 thrush bones, challenging the previous belief that such songbirds were mainly eaten by wealthier Romans. 'Classical sources frequently describe these small birds as a delicacy served in elite banquets, often prepared with elaborate culinary techniques,' scientists wrote. Some ancient texts, including ones written by Pliny the Elder, described fattening songbirds with figs before roasting them with different sauces. The new find provides valuable insights into the preparation and consumption of these small birds. Researchers found signs that the bird sternum was removed to flatten it before cooking in oil at these fast-food shops. In comparison, bird remains found near ancient household settings typically included more complete carcasses. 'The removal of the sternum to flatten the birds would have facilitated rapid cooking while maintaining meat moisture, making it especially suitable for busy food vendors serving immediate consumption needs,' scientists wrote. 'Given that Roman culinary practices often involved frying small birds in oil rather than grilling, it is plausible that at Pollentia, thrushes were not grilled but rather pan-fried, as suggested by historical recipes.' The latest evidence also suggests food shops followed a 'standardised approach' optimised for commercial food service. 'This evidence suggests that thrushes were commonly sold and consumed in Roman urban spaces, challenging the prevailing notion based on written sources that thrushes were exclusively a luxury food item for elite banquets,' researchers wrote. 'Furthermore, their seasonal availability suggests that urban vendors capitalised on migratory cycles to enhance food diversity and economic stability.'
