Nokia, blackned to develop next-gen tactical networks for German army
(Reuters) - Finland's Nokia and defence technology firm blackned, majority-owned by Rheinmetall, will jointly develop next-generation tactical networks for the German armed forces, the companies said on Wednesday.
The new mobile communication systems will be specifically "tailored" for Germany's defence requirements, Nokia said, with potential for adaptation to other countries' defense needs.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Nokia and blackned will bring together their 5G technology and software expertise to create tactical networks for battlefield operations, integrated with Rheinmetall's Battlesuite digital platform.
Tactical networks allow military personnel to share information, coordinate operations, and maintain situational awareness in the field, even in challenging environments where regular communication infrastructure is not available.
The deal comes as the Finnish maker of telecoms gear, which also provides secure defense communications networks, seeks to benefit from growing military spending across Europe.

Attorney General ‘regrets' comparing calls to leave ECHR with 1930s Germany
The Attorney General 'regrets' remarks in which he compared calls for the UK to leave international courts with 1930s Germany, his spokesman has said. In a statement, Lord Richard Hermer's spokesman said the peer acknowledged his 'choice of words was clumsy' but rejected 'the characterisation of his speech by the Conservatives'. Lord Hermer has faced criticism for a speech on Thursday in which he criticised politicians who argued that Britain 'abandons the constraints of international law in favour of raw power'. Arguing that similar claims had been made 'in the early 1930s by 'realist' jurists in Germany', Lord Hermer added that abandoning international law would only 'give succour to (Vladimir) Putin'. He also said that because of what happened 'in 1933, far-sighted individuals rebuilt and transformed the institutions of international law'. That is the year that Adolf Hitler became German chancellor. The speech prompted Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, who has suggested the UK would have to leave the ECHR if it stops the country from doing 'what is right', to accuse Lord Hermer of 'starting from a position of self loathing, where Britain is always wrong and everyone else is right'. In a post on social media, she said: 'The fact is laws go bad and need changing, institutions get corrupted. Our sovereignty is being eroded by out-of-date treaties and courts acting outside their jurisdiction. 'Pointing this out does not make anyone a Nazi. Labour have embarrassed themselves again with this comparison and unless the Prime Minister demands a retraction from his Attorney General, we can only assume these slurs reflect Keir Starmer's own view.' Lord Hermer's spokesman said: 'The Attorney General gave a speech defending international law which underpins our security, protects against threats from aggressive states like Russia and helps tackle organised immigration crime. 'He rejects the characterisation of his speech by the Conservatives. He acknowledges though that his choice of words was clumsy and regrets having used this reference.' In his same speech to the Royal United Services Institute on Thursday, the Attorney General said 'we must not stagnate in our approach to international rules' and that officials should 'look to apply and adapt existing obligations to address new situations'. 'We must be ready to reform where necessary,' he added.

Haribo recalls some products in Netherlands after cannabis found in candy
Haribo is recalling bags of its fizzy cola bottles in the Netherlands after cannabis was found in some of them. Authorities began investigating when several people, including children, became unwell after eating candy from one-kilo (2.2-pound) bags of Haribo Happy Cola F!ZZ, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) told CNN. Samples taken from the cola bottles revealed that the product was laced with cannabis, NVWA said, adding that Dutch police are now investigating how the candy became contaminated. 'How the cannabis ended up in the sweets is still unknown,' the food standards regulatory body said. CNN has contacted the Dutch police for comment. Through a statement issued by NVWA, Haribo said it was recalling bags with a best-before date of January 2026 and warned consumers not to eat the candy. It said the measure was precautionary, as only three bags were found to be contaminated as of Thursday. The recall is limited 'to a specific product and batch' in the Netherlands, with products in other countries unaffected, the German confectionary giant told CNN in a statement. The company is 'working closely with the authorities to support their investigation and establish the facts around the contamination,' it added. Incidents of candy becoming contaminated with illegal drugs are not uncommon, though they rarely involve commercial products. In 2023, more than 60 elementary school students were hospitalized in Jamaica after unknowingly eating cannabis-laced candy. The same year, two people were arrested and charged when seven Virginia elementary students ate gummy bears from a plastic bag with fentanyl residue on it. In 2019, Pennsylvania police warned parents after finding packets of THC-laced edibles made to look exactly like Nerds Rope candies.
