Over 40 lakh children on Monday (June 2, 2025) returned to schools in Kerala with educational institutions reopening in the State after a two-month-long summer vacation.
Though Kerala had experienced heavy rain situations in the majority of districts in the previous week due to the onset of the southwest monsoon, the State generally experienced comparatively good weather on Monday morning.

Schools in cities and villages alike witnessed a rush of enthusiastic children returning with new books, bags and uniforms marking their new academic year.
Teachers decorated their respective schools with festoons, balloons and coconut leaves to give a grand welcome to the wards.
In many educational institutions, school authorities and parent-teacher associations organised live beating of drums and percussion to welcome newcomers.
According to figures, over 2 lakh children joined Class 1 across Kerala in government and aided sectors. The exact figures would be available only later, official sources said.
Praveshanotsavam
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the Praveshanotsavam 2026-26, the formal reopening of the school, by lighting a traditional lamp in a function held in a State-run higher secondary school in Alappuzha.
In the culturally rich event, the Chief Minister also launched the State-level distribution of study materials.
During his address, Mr. Vijayan said children should be able to imbibe wisdom and discernment beyond knowledge through education.
"We should approach everything with critical intelligence. Secular thinking and democratic consciousness should be instilled in the minds of children. That should be the objective of education," he said.
Besides children, teachers should also be ready to be updated themselves with fresh knowledge and inputs, he said.
All schools should carry out a coordinated effort to create an atmosphere of curiosity and inquisitiveness to allay the fears and concerns of students, he added.
Mr. Vijayan also detailed the comprehensive changes being implemented by the State government during the new academic year.
Besides Mr. Vijayan, General Education Minister V. Sivankutty and Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian and other people's representatives were also present during the function.
The State government introduced several new changes, including time changes for high schools and value-based education in the new academic year.

Active Covid-19 cases rise to 4,026, 5 deaths in past 24 hours

India's active Covid-19 caseload rose to 4,026 on Tuesday, and five more deaths linked to the disease were reported in the past 24 hours. Active infections increased by 65 from Monday, when the active caseload stood at 3,962. Since January this year, 37 Covid-related deaths have been reported across the country. In the last 24 hours, two deaths were reported in Maharashtra and one each in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Of the five persons who died, four were elderly individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. The number of active cases has seen a surge since May 22, rising from 257 to more than 4,000. Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases at 1,416, followed by Maharashtra (494), Gujarat (397), and Delhi (393). The variants leading to the current rise in cases are not severe and are sub variants of Omicron, The Hindu quoted Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research Rajiv Behl as having said. After genome sequencing of samples from the western and southern parts of the country, four variants–LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1–were detected, all subvariants of Omicron. Of these, the first three were found in a larger number of cases, Dr Bhel told The Hindu. 'We have been monitoring the situation,' the director general was quoted as saying by the newspaper. 'We should…be vigilant but there is no cause to worry.'

Owaisi, Azad Effectively Countered Pakistan's False Narrative: Jay Panda To News18

Last Updated: The BJP MP, who returned after leading an all-party delegation to four nations, said opposition parties should reconcile with the fact that PM Modi is admired worldwide The all-party delegation led by BJP MP Baijayant Jay Panda wrapped up its four-nation visit to Bahrain, Kuwait, Algeria, and Saudi Arabia, where it conveyed India's zero tolerance on terror as well as the 'new normal" policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in dealing with cross-border terrorism. In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18 after returning to India on Tuesday, Panda highlighted the usefulness and success of the visit. Despite being gruelling, it was essential to convey the message, he said. After the 26/11 Mumbai attacks of 2008, India did not respond, and Pakistan blackmailed India with threats of nuclear escalation, Panda stated. 'However, under PM Modi, there is zero tolerance for terrorism. Our message under PM Modi is clear: we will not tolerate terrorism. Pakistan has spread a lot of misinformation, and we needed to clear the air and show that India stands united," he said. Fellow delegation members Asaduddin Owaisi and Ghulam Nabi Azad were very powerful voices in the group, said Panda. 'When they spoke, it effectively countered the false narrative spread by Pakistan," he told CNN-News18. 'The world sees India as an opportunity and recognises us as a country that has demonstrated ahimsa (non-violence). Pakistan sheltered Osama bin Laden and continues to shelter dozens of terrorists." Regarding the Congress demanding a special parliamentary session and raising concerns about Operation Sindoor, Panda said the terrorists behind the April 22 Pahalgam attack have been identified and Pakistan has admitted its role. 'I don't wish to delve into the opposition's statements," he added. 'Every section of political parties showed a united front, though some wanted to indulge in politics, which I choose to avoid." Countries that provide funds to Pakistan have issued strong statements against it, he said. Pakistan has deceived these countries by claiming the money would be used for development, but it was misused, said the BJP leader. 'Pakistan has received funding from numerous countries, including those in the Gulf, the Middle East, and Asia, who are now fed up with Pakistan's actions," he said. Panda added that the opposition has a forum in Parliament, but 'some misuse their rights and raise questions on Operation Sindoor". All of India stands united against terrorism, and everyone should cherish this unity, said Panda. 'The countries I have visited have immense respect for Modi ji. Opposition parties should reconcile with the fact that Modi ji is admired worldwide," he added. First Published:
