Popular Mass. beach to close for summer 2025 as $6M construction underway
A popular Massachusetts beach will remain closed for the entirety of the summer as a new multi-million dollar bathhouse is constructed.
The main beach at the Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord will be closed the 2025 summer season while construction workers build a $6.1 million bathhouse, according to an announcement on Friday from the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).
Another beach at Walden Pond, called Red Cross Beach, will still be open for the summer, but no lifeguards will be stationed at its designated swimming area. Parking will also be limited at the reservation due to the construction.
The $6.1 million bathhouse project will replace a current two-story bathhouse at the pond with a single-story building designed to be 'universally accessible' and meet state and federal accessibility requirements, according to DCR.
The new bathhouse — complete with new restrooms and changing areas — will be DCR's 'first net-zero facility,' DCR said.
Signage about the construction and related beach closure has been posted around the park. DCR suggested the following beaches and pools as alternative options for swimming in the summer time:
• Ashland State Park
• Cochituate State Park in Natick
• Hopkinton State Park
• Charles E. Shannon Jr. Memorial Beach in Winchester
• Raymond Lord Pool in Lowell
• Connors Memorial Pool in Waltham
• Clarence W. Dealtry Memorial Pool in Watertown,
• Francis J. McCrehan Memorial Pool in Cambridge
• Raymond Lord Memorial Pool in Lowell
Walden Pond attracts nearly 600,000 visitors per year in its 462 acres of protected space, according to The Walden Woods Project. It was made famous through the work of Henry David Thoreau called 'Walden,' or 'Life in the Woods.'

Mass. lottery drawing postponed after numerous balls fell out of machine
Prior to a Mass Cash drawing Thursday, a door on the machine was left open, allowing numerous balls to fall out. The game, which has drawings twice per day, had to be postponed. It was for the 9 p.m. drawing. The door that was left open was on the Mass Cash drawing machine's mixing chamber. The balls fell out prior to the first number being drawn, which made the entire drawing invalid, lottery officials said. 'The Lottery is committed to ensuring the integrity of our games,' said Lottery Director Mark William Bracken. 'Drawings are conducted twice a day, 365 days a year and while we strive for perfection, we're all human and mistakes can happen. We apologize to our players for the inconvenience and appreciated their patience as we worked diligently to resolve the situation.' Instead, the drawing happened at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. The winning numbers for the Mass Cash drawing on Thursday are 6-15-22-28-30. Mass. State Lottery winner: Mobil gas station sells $100,000 ticket Mass. Growing Wildlife Program supports pollinators throughout Mass.
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Growing Wildlife Program launched last Friday and is dedicated to supporting pollinators, birds, and wildlife in Massachusetts. Local schools work to keep students cool as temperatures rise It's all part of the National Pollinators Month initiative, an effort to reduce the need for fossil fuels. It also increases the resilience of stormwater runoff and flooding. Not only does it help the environment, but it also contributes to the wildlife by increasing food, habitat, as well as the aesthetic beauty of the landscape. 'This one is milkweed, and they support the monarch butterfly,' said Janice Jacyzn of Holyoke. 'So I'm just hoping to invite the monarch butterfly in my yard and support them.' At Heritage State Park in Holyoke, people were able to talk to DCR members on Wednesday and learn more about the program. ‘False narratives': Mass. US attorney blasts Boston Mayor Wu over remarks on ICE
U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Leah Foley sharply criticized Boston Mayor Michelle Wu in a video released Wednesday morning, accusing Wu of creating 'false narratives' about the mission of federal immigration enforcement. The video is a response to comments Wu made during The WBUR Festival this weekend, where she labeled Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, 'secret police.' 'Every aspect of what's happening at the federal level is causing harm in our local communities,' Wu said. 'People are terrified for their lives and for their neighbors, folks getting snatched off the street by secret police who are wearing masks, who can offer no justification for why certain people are being taken and then detained.' But Foley, who was appointed by President Donald Trump's administration in January, shot back forcefully in the recorded statement, which came just days after she and other federal officials announced the arrest of nearly 1,500 people in Massachusetts. Foley called Wu's comments 'reckless and inflammatory.' 'Referring to federal agents as 'secret police' is offensive,' Foley said in the video posted to X. 'There are no secret police. ICE agents, along with other federal law enforcement partners, are making immigration arrests. That is no secret. They are arresting individuals who are here illegally, which is a violation of federal law.' 'Every enforcement action is conducted within the bounds of the Constitution and our laws with oversight, legal justification and accountability. To claim otherwise is a gross misrepresentation and a disservice to the public,' Foley continued. Foley repeated a claim made during the Monday press conference about the arrests, saying ICE agents are wearing masks to cover their faces for fear of their personal information being leaked online. She blamed Wu and others for spreading 'false narratives' about the agency's mission. Wu's claim that people are being 'snatched' off the street is 'offensive,' Foley said. 'On the contrary, every arrest or detention is pursuant to and sanctioned by federal law,' she continued. 'The U.S. Attorney's Office stands in support of our federal law enforcement partners, whose mission it is to protect the residents of Massachusetts, regardless of the noise being generated by politicians who either do not understand federal law or simply believe our nation's immigration laws should not be enforced. We will not apologize for doing our job.' Pop star 'to disappear for a bit' after sharing breast cancer diagnosis Mass.
