Six wounded as man attacks Colorado crowd with firebombs – DW – 06/01/2025
Multiple people have been injured in what the FBI called a "targeted terror attack" in the US state of Colorado. Police said a male suspect was taken into custody.
Several people were injured in an attack at an outdoor mall in Boulder, Colorado, police said on Sunday.
The attack occurred at the popular Pearl Street pedestrian mall known for attracting tourists and college students.
FBI Director Kash Patel said an investigation had been launched following a "targeted terror attack."
"We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado," Patel said on X.
He added: "Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available."
He did not provide any further information while Boulder police stressed it was too soon to speculate about a motive.
Suspect identified and taken into custody
Later on Sunday, the suspect was identified as a 45-year-old who shouted "Free Palestine" and used incendiary devices in the attack, said Mark Michalek, the FBI special agent in charge of the Denver field office.
The man was taken into custody.
No charges were immediately declared but officials said they expect to hold him "fully accountable."
FBI official Michalek said there were six victims, aged between 67 and 88 years old, who were taken to hospitals for treatment.
The suspect was also injured and taken to hospital, but authorities didn't elaborate on the nature of his injuries.
Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said he did not believe anyone else was involved. "We're fairly confident we have the lone suspect in custody," he said.
'This was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in downtown Boulder on Pearl Street and this act was unacceptable,' Redfearn said at an earlier press conference. 'I ask that you join me in thinking
about the victims, the families of those victims, and everyone involved in this tragedy.'
'Terror has no place' in the United States, says Rubio
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio took to X to denounce the attack.
"We're united in prayer for the victims of a targeted terror attack this afternoon in Boulder," Rubio posted. "Terror has no place in our great country."
The attack occurred near a demonstration to remember and raise visibility for the Israeli hostages who remain in captivity in Gaza.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a prominent Jewish Democrat, said he was closely monitoring the situation. "This is horrifying, and this cannot continue. We must stand up to antisemitism."
The attack comes over a week after the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers outside a Jewish museum in Washington, where a 31-year-old suspect who shouted "Free Palestine" was taken into custody by police.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis posted on social media that it was "unfathomable that the Jewish community is facing another terror attack here in Boulder."
Israel's ambassador to the United Nations in New York also expressed outrage at the attack. "Terrorism against Jews does not stop at the Gaza border — it is already burning the streets of America," he said in a statement.
"Today, in Boulder, Colorado, Jewish people marched with a moral and humane demand: to return the hostages. In response, the Jewish protesters were brutally attacked, with an attacker throwing a Molotov cocktails at them," he said. "Make no mistake — this is not a political protest, this is terrorism."

FBI Hounded for Epstein Files Update After Launching Tip Line to 'Protect Children' From Gender-Affirming Care: 'You Care More About Votes'
Social media users began relentlessly harassing the FBI, calling for the release of the agency's files on disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein after the bureau announced that it was looking for tips regarding gender-affirming care for children. The FBI took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to ask for such tips and other relevant information. "Help the FBI protect children. As the Attorney General has made clear, we will protect our children and hold accountable those who mutilate them under the guise of gender-affirming care. Report tips of any hospitals, clinics, or practitioners performing these surgical procedures on children at 1-800-CALL-FBI or the agency wrote. Users quickly pointed out the bureau's goal of protecting children, arguing that releasing the Epstein files would uphold that sentiment. "Seeing that Epstein files are still unreleased; I don't think the FBI actually cares about children's safety," wrote one user. "Here's a tip: investigate yourselves! Everyone from Epstein's client list is still walking free, with zero repercussions. You guys are NOT serious about protecting our children," another chided. "Right. Just like you helped the children on Epstein's island," one user said sarcastically. "You c***s are literally hiding the biggest pedophilia ring known to man, because it was rich people who bought the children. Kindly f*** off," one user added. "Have you thought of arresting high-profile pedophiles like Epstein's clients? Letting a certain group of pedos go solely because they are rich, famous people being used by our Deep State and the Mossad shouts that you care more about the ability to garner votes/favors than the welfare of the abused children," another wrote. "Good luck when you meet God and try to explain." The post from the FBI came on the second day of Pride Month, with the Trump administration having launched a crackdown on rights for LGBTQ+ youth, especially transgender individuals, since President Donald Trump's first day in office. "Health care for trans youth is just that — it's health care," Laurel Powell, a Human Rights Campaign spokesperson, said in a statement obtained by Axios. "Threatening to weaponize the FBI against American doctors who are following medical best practice would undermine parents who just want their children to thrive. There is no room for Donald Trump, the FBI or anyone else in the exam room," they continued. Originally published on Latin Times

Gaza: UN chief demands probe as more killed at aid site – DW – 06/03/2025
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said it is "unacceptable that Palestinians are risking their lives for food." Witnesses have reported a second attack on civilians waiting for aid. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for an independent investigation into the deaths of dozens of Palestinians near an aid distribution site in Gaza, prompting a fierce response from Israel. Guterres said in a statement that he was "appalled by the reports of Palestinians killed and injured while seeking aid in Gaza." "It is unacceptable that Palestinians are risking their lives for food," the UN Secretary-General's statement said. "I call for an immediate and independent investigation into these events and for perpetrators to be held accountable," Guterres said. Witnesses and international relief workers said on Sunday that Israeli forces fired on Palestinians waiting to receive aid close to a distribution site in Gaza. Journalists also reported receiving an off the record statement from the Israeli military saying that they had fired on "suspects" who posed a threat. At least 21 were killed and scores more injured, according to a Red Cross field hospital and numerous witnesses. Second aid shooting reported Israel's foreign ministry condemned Guterres' statement as a "disgrace," and criticized him for ignoring the role of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein wrote in a post on X that Guterres' statement did not mention "the fact that Hamas is the one shooting civilians and trying to prevent them from collecting aid packages." Marmorstein's claims have not been confirmed by any other source. On Tuesday, the Gaza Health Ministry said that Israeli forces had once again fired on civilians, this time trying to collect aid in the city of Rafah, killing at least 24 people. In this instance, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed immediately that they had fired on individuals who "posed a threat." Recalling the shooting Witness Mohammed Abu Deqqa told French news agency AFP that initially the people gathered on Sunday thought warning shots were being fired by the Israeli army till the shooting intensified. "I began to see people lying on the ground, covered in blood. That was around 5:30 am," he said. "People started running, but many couldn't escape. The bullets were chasing people even as they tried to flee." According to AFP, its photos taken around 5:40am showed civilians using donkey carts to transport bodies shortly after sunrise.
