Selangor tourism campaign goes sky-high with AirAsia
SEPANG: Tourism Selangor, in collaboration with Selangor Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI), has partnered with AirAsia to promote the state's destinations in the skies, aiming to reach a target of eight million tourists this year.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the collaboration between the state government and the airline was a significant step towards strengthening the state's tourism, not only domestically but also internationally.
'With this collaboration, we bring the aspiration of 'Surprising Selangor' by using AirAsia aircraft as mobile ambassadors that showcase the image, culture and uniqueness of our state to the entire ASEAN region and China.
'A total of 15 AirAsia aircraft are now adorned with promotional visuals of Selangor tourism inside the cabin, including on overhead luggage compartments and the back of seats,' he said during the AirAsia Advertising Ceremony in conjunction with Visit Selangor Year today.
Amirudin's speech was read by Selangor executive councillor for Local Government and Tourism, Datuk Ng Suee Lim, with regard to the sky-high campaign strategically positioned for airline passengers to catch a bird's-eye view of destinations in Selangor.
'The flight routes involved are from Kuala Lumpur to major ASEAN cities, as well as destinations in China such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Kunming, Ningbo, Nanning, Shantou, Guilin, and Quanzhou.
'These aircraft has flights to key destinations in ASEAN countries and China, thereby introducing Selangor to more international tourists.
'Through initiatives like this, we not only promote the attractions of Selangor but also build investor confidence, enhance international networks and strengthen the state's economic position,' he said.

Six apartment buildings have been identified as pilot projects. Amirudin also said the DSS initiative was expected to generate returns for the state within 10 years, as residential units that have obtained strata titles would be paying parcel quit rent. Also present at the event was state housing and culture committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah. He said strata housing development in Selangor had grown rapidly in the past two decades. 'According to the Department of the Director-General of Lands and Mines, there were 898,368 strata titles registered in Selangor as of 2023. 'Across the state, 648 development schemes, involving 138,817 residential units have been unable to obtain strata titles since 2007,' he said. The programme, which attracted many residents from the surrounding area, kicked off with mass aerobic exercises, followed by activities like traditional games competition, basic health and teeth check up, and community cooking. Young children had a fun time playing at the inflatable playground and getting close to animals at the petting zoo set up just for the programme. There were also many booths set up by government agencies for the people to get to know more about the services.

Loke praises AirAsia crew after adverse weather turns 50-minute flight into 4 hours

In a Facebook post, Loke commended the professionalism and dedication of the flight crew throughout the incident. Advertisement He said he had boarded AirAsia flight AK6047 at Senai International Airport at 10.45 pm last night after attending a DAP Johor fundraiser dinner in Johor Bahru. The flight proceeded normally until the descent phase, when the aircraft encountered heavy clouds and thunderstorms. However, as it approached the runway, strong crosswinds and gusty storms forced the pilot to abort landing and circle the airspace around Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). 'What was supposed to be a 50-minute flight took almost four hours! Unexpected weather is one of the biggest challenges in airline operations. I was later informed that at least five AirAsia flights were diverted, and probably many other flights too. 'Captain Teng Huah Jer later made the decision to divert the flight to Penang for refuelling before the weather improved for a safe landing in KLIA,' he said. Advertisement Loke praised the pilot's calm and clear communication, noting that regular updates played a crucial role in keeping passengers informed and calm. 'I also wish to commend the entire crew for tirelessly supporting passengers in need. Throughout the entire episode, the crew remained composed, compassionate and professional, assisting passengers with care and empathy,' he said. Despite the extended hours, the crew maintained their professionalism and even apologised personally to every passenger for the inconvenience, he added. Loke also thanked Captain Jer, First Officer Bryan Alexander Yin Kian Yam, senior cabin crew Muhammad Asyraf Muhammad Nasrullah and cabin crew members Mandasari Nikita Florensia, Bagus Setyadi Nugroho and Norjuniza Muhammad for their efforts. He also acknowledged the ground handlers, air traffic controllers and support teams at Senai, Penang and KLIA for their swift and coordinated responses that ensured the safe completion of the journey. 'We landed safely at KLIA at 2.40 am, almost four hours after the plane took off from Senai! Surge in foreign tourists visiting S'gor in lead-up to VSY 2025

SELANGOR is experiencing a shift in its tourism landscape as international visitors begin to form a larger part of the state's tourist arrivals. According to state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the ratio of international to domestic tourists was previously 30:70. 'But by 2024, we successfully broke that pattern. 'Now, international tourists make up a larger share of visitors. 'This a positive sign for Selangor's growing global appeal,' he said. Ng said that while the momentum was encouraging, Sekinchan faced one major hurdle – the lack of four-star hotels for the rising number of higher-spending tourists. He was speaking to reporters at Sekinchan Padi Field Festival 2025 in the Sabak Bernam district. The state government had aimed to draw some 13,000 visitors to the two-day event. Held at Terminal Sekinchan, the festival was the first of its kind in Malaysia and had been held in support of Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025. 'This festival was created to let visitors enjoy the beauty of agro-tourism in northern Selangor, a region that produces the most rice in Malaysia and is rich in natural beauty that you can't find in modern cities,' said Ng. The festival was launched by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Held from 7am to 7pm over two days, it featured a variety of family-friendly and cultural activities. Among first day highlights were electric tram and rickshaw tours through padi fields, a food festival, traditional kite (wau kapal) demonstrations, a mini kite decoration competition and a live performance by Malaysian singer-songwriter Aizat Amdan. The second day offered even more attractions, which included a padi field run, free health screenings and environmental volunteer activities. The festival was part of the VSY2025 campaign that aimed to draw 8 million visitors and generate RM11.7bil in tourism- related transactions. To support these goals, the Selangor Budget 2025 has allocated RM8mil for VSY2025 preparations. These include programming and upgrading tourism facilities across all nine districts. In the works are over 100 programmes and initiatives covering educational tourism, sports, food and beverage, arts, culture and heritage. Also present during the festival press conference were Menteri Besar Incorporated chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop and Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling.
