2026 Toyota RAV4 Revealed, Australia's Top-Selling Vehicle Overhauled

The covers have been taken off the 2026 Toyota RAV4, which is all-new in its sixth generation, and introduces Toyota's first PHEV powertrain for the market before it arrives in Australia in the first half of 2026.
While popular 143kW series-parallel hybrid system variants will remain the core of the line-up, the PHEV variants will be available in 2WD or AWD arrangements with a 2.5-litre petrol engine that's combined with a new 22.7 kWh high-capacity lithium-ion battery to provide a targeted electric-only driving range of up to 100km based on the WLTP cycle.
Power-wise, the new 150kW front electric motor helps the top-of-the-range 2026 Toyota RAV4 AWD models produce a combined system output of 227kW, meaning the RAV4 can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 5.8 seconds. That's quicker than a brand-new 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI, which manages the same in 5.9 seconds. Meanwhile, affordable 2WD PHEV variants will also be offered with a total system output of 201kW.

Look inside the new 2026 Toyota RAV4 and you'll find an overhauled interior with plenty of new technology, physical buttons, and Toyota's latest multimedia system powered by something they're calling 'Arene.' This is essentially a fancy word for AI modelling that they're using for improved data utilisation to improve the multimedia functionality and driver assistance systems.
This new screen has improved clarity and a new configurable home screen layout. There's also voice control that is used with features like Google Points of Interest and real-time navigation. Ultimately, none of this probably matters to you as you'll likely just use wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety features have also been improved with front cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitoring with rear vehicle approach indicator, lane change assist with turn signal-linked autonomous lane change functionality on highways (with adaptive cruise control and lane tracing assist), and the Pre Collision System functionality has been expanded to recognise obstacles, bicycles and motorbikes. Finally, the advanced parking feature now lets owners control parking from outside the vehicle with a smartphone and a three-dimensional panoramic view monitor has been added.

To make the most of the 2.5-litre PHEV powertrain that produces 227kW of power in AWD model grades, Toyota has introduced a flagship GR Sport variant that stands out with lightweight 20-inch twin-spoke black alloy wheels, aerodynamic front and rear spoilers, and a distinctive grille design with GR mesh pattern for a deeper 3D effect.
Beyond the visual additions, it will be a 'more dynamic expression of the RAV4's handling characteristics,' and this results from a 20 mm-wider wheel track and upgraded high-performance damper design with stiffer rear suspension brace, retuned suspension, and retuned power steering calibration.
Typical for a GR Sport model, the interior adds plenty of GR logos and red accents, and you'll find them on the sports seats that use a combination of synthetic leather and suede upholstery, console knee pads and aluminium pedals.
'The all-new sixth-generation RAV4 will carry on the legacy created by its predecessors, while introducing exciting new Toyota-first technologies like plug-in hybrid powertrains and next-generation software,' said Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley. 'Since the 2001 launch of Toyota's first hybrid electric vehicle in Australia, we have led the development of hybrid technology that is refined, powerful and efficient, delivering customer confidence for quality, durability and reliability.'
We still don't know the local specification, grade line-up, or pricing for the 2026 Toyota RAV4, but these things will be revealed closer to its arrival in the first half of 2026. The current entry-level GX model is priced from AUD$42,260 plus on-road costs, while the top-spec Edge starts at $58,360 plus on-road costs.

Likely to become the most expensive Birkin bag ever sold, Sotheby's is auctioning off the Original Birkin Crafted For Jane Birkin in 1985 at an auction on July 10th, 2025. While auction estimates are withheld, the bag will likely eclipse the USD$450,000 plus sales price of the Diamond Himalaya Birkin 30, which sold at Sotheby's in 2022. It's not often that handbags carry provenance, but this Birkin is different. The story goes that the actress was sitting alongside Jean-Louis Dumas, the French billionaire businessman who was the chairman of the Hermès group from 1978 to 2006, on an Air France flight. She complained that she couldn't find a bag big enough for daily life, so the brand designed one and asked if they could name it after her. The rest is history, as they say. Now, her original bag is headed to auction, and it carries serious provenance not just from Jane Birkin, but from those who have held onto the bag since she donated it at Millon, Paris, Les enchéres de I'espoir, Association Solidarité Sida on Wednesday, October 5, 1994, Théâtre de l'Empire. It was sold in Poulain Le Fur, Paris, on Friday, May 12 2000 (lot 70) and has sat in a private collection (and museums) ever since. Given the provenance of this bag, it was exhibited at the MoMA in New York for the ' Items: Is Fashion Modern?,' exhibition in 2018 before it was sent to London's Victoria and Albert Museum for the 'Bags Inside Out' exhibition in 2020. Now, it's hitting the auction block at Sotheby's on July 10th, 2025, where it will likely make history as the most expensive Birkin ever sold.

Kia wants an even cheaper Sportage Hybrid to take on the Toyota RAV4 in Australia
Kia Australia's product boss wants a more affordable, entry-level Sportage Hybrid (HEV) variant to better compete with the top-selling Toyota RAV4, but he can't confirm exactly when such an option will become available. Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian media launch of the facelifted Sportage, Kia Australia's general manager for product Roland Rivero said his team's next priority for the upgraded mid-size SUV range is adding a cheaper hybrid grade, but getting it here could be an uphill battle. 'What we need to monitor first is this trim and powertrain strategy [the new all-wheel drive HEV variants in SX and GT-Line trims]. We want to see how this goes in the marketplace,' Mr Rivero told CarExpert. 'On top of that, we have to marry it up to how much supply we can get. Sportage S 2.0 FWD Credit: CarExpert 'We're quite happy that… we've got enough supply to do SX and GT-Line across [Hybrid] all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive, and to ask for another variant means we're going to need more supply. 'If the stars do align, we can bring [entry-level Sportage S HEV variants] in. It's easy to create the variant, but not necessarily easy to get the supply of it. So we've got to juggle that right now and see how we go – timing wise… I don't know,' Mr Rivero added. Notwithstanding his desire for a cheaper S-spec version of the Sportage hybrid, Mr Rivero said supply of petrol-electric Sportage vehicles has improved slightly for the model's mid-life facelift, and currently sits somewhere between 400 and 500 units per month compared to the 300/month total for the pre-facelift model. During the Sportage media conference, Mr Rivero also indicated that initial orders are showing a 60:40 split between AWD and front-wheel drive Sportage Hybrid variants, which is unsurprising given AWD hybrids have previously been unavailable in Australia. A cheaper front-drive Sportage S hybrid would likely drop that figure to around $42,000. Australia's favourite SUV, the hybrid-only Toyota RAV4, is currently priced from $42,260 plus on-road costs for the cheapest GX 2WD variant. The Kia Sportage lineup is currently the fourth best-selling mid-size SUV in Australia based on VFACTS new-vehicle sales data, with 8723 units registered between January 1 and May 31 this year. Its 9.4 per cent share of the nation's largest auto market segment is bested by the aforementioned RAV4 (with 21,613 sales in the same period), as well as the Mitsubishi Outlander (10,203) and Mazda CX-5 (9409). Interestingly, the related Hyundai Tucson lineup (7940 sales YTD) trails the Sportage in terms of popularity, despite offering double the number of hybrid variants – eight versus just four for the updated Sportage.
