SINGAPORE: Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh will remain the Leader of the Opposition with staff and resources to carry out his duties, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
'The WP fielded a strong slate of candidates, and put up a tough fight in this election,' said PM Wong, who added that he had spoken to Pritam.
WP has also consolidated and increased its presence in Parliament, the Prime Minister added in a Facebook post on May 5.
The opposition party retained Aljunied GRC, Sengkang GRC and Hougang SMC, returning 1ten elected MPs to Parliament.
As the 'best losers' at the polls - narrowly losing to the ruling PAP in Jalan Kayu SMC and Tampines GRC - the party will be able to take up two Non-Constituency MP seats in Singapore's 15th Parliament.
In the five constituencies that it did not win, WP candidates polled above 40 per cent.
PM Wong said: 'I look forward to the contributions of the Workers' Party members in Parliament,' he added.
Pritam was appointed Leader of the Opposition by former prime minister Lee Hsien Loong after the last general election in 2020, which saw WP win its second GRC - Sengkang.
The Leader of the Opposition's role is to lead the opposition in presenting alternative views in parliamentary debates on policies, Bills and motions.
His duties also include leading and organising scrutiny of the government's positions and actions in Parliament.
On May 3, WP triumphed in its traditional strongholds of Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC, returning its core leaders - including Pritam, its secretary-general - to Parliament.
Despite a national swing towards the ruling party, the five-member WP team in Aljunied GRC maintained its hold over the constituency, with 59.68 per cent of the vote.
In Hougang, WP polled 62.17 per cent. The party also held on to Sengkang, winning 56.31 per cent of the vote.
While the party did not win any new constituency, it polled above 40 per cent in the constituencies where it lost, namely the Punggol, East Coast and Tampines GRCs, as well as the Jalan Kayu and Tampines Changkat SMCs. - The Straits Times/ANN

In the war of words between the two, Armizan said in his press conference on June 5, he clearly stated that his ministry was enforcing Ops Gasak under the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021 to combat the smuggling of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), among others. "The MCA president was referring to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Act 2021. "It is of course impossible to find the legal provisions I was referring to because I mentioned 'A' but he was referring to 'Z'," he said in a Facebook post. Armizan said in 2021, the then-domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry drafted amendments to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021. "It was enforced on Oct 15, 2021, and at the same time, gazetted for public access," he said. Armizan said he was unfazed by Dr Wee accusing him as a liar but urged him not to confuse the people by quoting another law. Armizan also addressed Dr Wee's comments that he is a greenhorn MP, saying that even with lesser experience, he still respects the legal process. He had previously said this regulation was enforced during the former administration when Dr Wee served as a minister. Previously, Armizan had said Ops Gasak is being carried out under three existing laws – the Control of Supplies Act 1961, the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021. Earlier on Sunday, Dr Wee had said though he served as a minister in 2021, he was never involved in approving such regulations. "The government has the discretion to decide whether or not to enforce such policies," said Dr Wee. The Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021, which came into force on Oct 15, 2021, limits the use of subsidised LPG to a maximum of 42kg at any one time for commercial purposes. Any shop exceeding this limit must obtain a permit and switch to non-subsidised LPG. On Thursday (June 5), Armizan said small and micro-scale food and beverage operators would be exempted from enforcement under Ops Gasak. Armizan said the Cabinet agreed to review the regulations on the use of subsidised LPG cylinders by such traders, after recommendations submitted by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry. Ops Gasak, which began on May 1 until Oct 31, is meant to curb illegal activities such as decanting (transferring gas from subsidised LPG cylinders to non-subsidised ones), smuggling and the misuse of subsidised LPG by medium and large-scale industrial sectors. Dr Wee had said the Ops Gasak should have focused on large-scale operations and at the borders and not on petty traders and hawkers.

Philippine and Singapore expand cooperation in prioritised areas

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr announced this at a joint press conference on June 4, the first day of an introductory visit to Manila by PM Wong, reported by The Straits Times. On renewable energy, the two countries agreed to deepen both bilateral and regional cooperation, and to accelerate efforts towards realising the Asean power grid, a plan to connect the electricity networks of the group's 10 member countries to enable cross-border power trading by 2045. Marcos said Singapore will continue to be a major partner in the Philippines' aspiration to diversify its energy sources, while Wong said Singapore companies are interested in renewable energy in the Philippines, including solar and wind projects. The two countries are also working to finalise a legally binding implementation agreement for cross-border carbon credit transfers that is aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. An implementation agreement will facilitate commercial participation in carbon credit projects, which can spur technology transfer and green investment and create good jobs, said Wong. The two leaders also said their respective health ministries are exploring ways to deepen health cooperation, such as in upskilling and the reintegration of returning Filipinos into the Philippine healthcare system.
