Migrant boat capsize kills seven in Spain's Canary Islands

MADRID; Four women and three girls died after their migrant boat capsized shortly before reaching safety in Spain's Canary Islands on Wednesday, emergency services said, the latest tragedy on the perilous route.
Emergency services in the Atlantic archipelago said rescuers supported by a helicopter were working to save people in the port of La Restinga on the island of El Hierro.
Red Cross spokesman Alexis Ramos told RTVE there could be "more than 100 people" on the boat but was unable to provide a figure for the number of missing.
Public broadcaster RTVE aired footage of rescuers throwing lifebuoys to people clinging onto an overturned boat and treading water off El Hierro.
Emergency services initially confirmed on X "the death of two women after the capsizing of a vessel" in La Restinga and later said "health services confirm another two dead women".
The rescuers then reported the death of two girls aged five and another aged 16, which meant the incident "has resulted in seven people dead".
A three-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl were being treated after they almost drowned and would be transported by helicopter to a hospital in Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, the emergency services added on X.

According to the NGO Caminando Fronteras, at least 10,457 migrants died or disappeared while trying to reach Spain by sea from January 1 to December 5, 2024.
Local authorities have consistently warned of unsustainable pressure on their resources and complained about a lack of solidarity from the rest of the country.
"Once again we witness the harshest face of immigration which those far away fail to appreciate in its true measure," the Canary Islands' regional leader Fernando Clavijo said on X. "Please listen to us!"
Almost 47,000 irregular arrivals reached the archipelago in 2024, breaking the annual record for the second year running, as tighter controls in the Mediterranean pushed migrants to attempt the Atlantic route.
But numbers are down so far this year, dropping 34.4 percent between January 1 and May 15 compared with the same period in 2024, according to the latest interior ministry figures.

The Significance of Hajj
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan The foundation of Hajj was laid by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Prophet Ismail (Ishmael). As part of this divine mission, they constructed the Kaaba. Referring to this, the Quran states: 'The first House to be built for mankind was the one at Makkah. It is a blessed place; a source of guidance for the whole world.' (3:96) Here, the term "source of guidance" signifies a source of divine enlightenment. According to a saying of the Prophet of Islam, when a believer returns home after performing Hajj, he is like he was on the day his mother gave birth to him (Sahih al-Bukhari). In other words, the person returns from Hajj as a newborn—pure and free from all sins. Reflecting on these words of the Prophet, it becomes clear that if one performs Hajj in its true spirit, one returns to one's original pure nature. This return to purity is not a miraculous occurrence; it is an intellectual process that requires conscious effort and personal engagement. It is known as de-conditioning. Through Hajj, a worshipper becomes aware of how everyone, without exception, is shaped by their environment. Therefore, there is a need to consciously remove this conditioning and return to the natural, God-given state. Hajj facilitates this process—it serves as a transformative course that helps undo the environmental conditioning and restores one's original nature. However, only those who perform Hajj with sincerity and understanding of its spirit can truly benefit from it. For someone who performs only the rituals of Hajj without internal awareness, the pilgrimage becomes little more than a kind of outing. The Prophet explained to his Companions that the various rites of Hajj symbolically represent the different phases of the life of Prophet Abraham. His entire life was devoted to a divine mission, and every believer is expected to adopt this pattern in their personal life. For instance, ihram—the simple attire of two unstitched pieces of cloth—symbolizes humility and simplicity. The ritual of tawaf, in which pilgrims circle the Kaaba seven times, signifies dedicating oneself to a purposeful life. Tawaf is followed by saee, which involves brisk walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah near the Kaaba. This act encourages one to direct personal effort and struggle toward attaining nearness to God. The sacrifice of an animal during the pilgrimage represents a pledge to live a life of sacrifice. The stoning of the devil (ramy al-jamarat) symbolizes the rejection of satanic influences. Finally, pilgrims enter the plains of Arafat chanting 'Labbayk! Labbayk!' ('O God, here I come!'). This chant is meant to remind the individual of the Day of Resurrection when all human beings will stand before God for accountability. The Prophet of Islam performed Hajj towards the end of his life. On this occasion, all of his Companions gathered in the plain of Arafat, about 20 kilometers east of Makkah. There, while mounted on his camel, the Prophet delivered a sermon famously known as the Khutbah Hajjatul Wida—The Sermon of the Farewell Pilgrimage. On this historic moment, the Prophet addressed not only his contemporaries but future generations of Muslims. The essence of this sermon is captured in the repeated words: 'Beware! do not commit oppression. Beware! do not commit oppression.' The purpose of this message was to close every door that leads to oppression—whether caused by pride, rebellion, or any other factor. This same principle is echoed in the Quran in relation to Hajj, as seen in the following verse: 'The pilgrimage is in the appointed months. Whoever intends to perform it during them must abstain from indecent speech (rafath), from all wicked conduct (fisq), and from quarrelling (jidal) while on the pilgrimage. Whatever good you may do, God is aware of it. Make provision for yourselves—but surely, the best of all provision is God-consciousness. Always be mindful of Me, you that are endowed with understanding.' (Quran 2:197) Hajj is the greater pilgrimage, while Umrah is the lesser one. Umrah can be performed at any time of the year, unlike Hajj which takes place only once annually. Islam does not require Muslims to repeatedly perform Hajj or Umrah. Instead, believers are commanded to perform Hajj or Umrah once in their lifetime, and thereafter to live in accordance with the profound lessons gained during the pilgrimage. A Gap Too Loud: Damaged Barriers Fail To Screen Noise, Turn Eyesore
New Delhi: To protect people living along the flyovers on Outer Ring Road from the constant noise of passing traffic, particularly at night when heavy trucks rumble along this route, noise barriers were installed a few years back. Due to lack of maintenance, huge gaps are now visible in what was supposed to be an impregnable wall that would block the sound. Sections have either disappeared or are damaged. Besides being an eyesore, these barriers are no longer serving their purpose. If any visitor to the city drives down this route, after landing at Delhi airport, the experience can hardly be pleasing to the senses. His cab will cross a series of flyovers that have these fractured noise barriers installed on both sides looking quite grim. The Rao Tula Ram, Munirka and Africa Avenue flyovers now have empty frames at many places and sheets that are coming off, flapping dangerously when the wind blows. Installing these barriers along both sides of the flyover had, according to one estimate, cost around Rs 40–50 lakh, said a PWD source. "Theft is the biggest problem. If you're driving from the airport at night, the headlights from the RTR flyover, which is at a height, shine straight into your eyes," said Jaspreet, a Vasant Vihar resident. "Our homes shake when heavy trucks pass by. It's like sleeping on a railway track," added Suresh Goel of the Vasant Vihar Federation of RWAs. Another resident added: "The sound levels are high and cause noise pollution. Opening windows is impossible and using open areas at our home not feasible." Dr Nasim Akhtar, chief scientist at Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), says the so-called "noise barriers" are mostly just "view-cutters" and don't do the job of reducing noise anyway. "These are not proper barriers," he says. "For a noise barrier to be effective, you need two things: strong columns or posts that can hold the structure, much like a photo frame, and high-quality panels (which is the photo itself) that can absorb or reflect sound. If the columns are weak, the barriers can't last. That's why you see them breaking so often. Even when they are installed, they don't reduce noise properly, which means high maintenance costs." He added that CRRI had provided the design for noise barriers on five flyovers (Madhuban Chowk to Mukarba Chowk, Mangolpuri to Mukarba Chowk, Prembari to Azadpur, Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh and Vasant Vihar) which guarantees that the structure would remain in place for at least 20 years. "But that hasn't been implemented yet. The focus should be on proper design," he emphasized. Dr Akhtar pointed out that PWD uses multiwall polycarbonate sheets for the barriers. While this material is often used for soundproofing walls, it's not the best choice. The ideal material, according to him, is PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), which is stronger, more durable and better at blocking noise. PMMA is a transparent plastic commonly used for sound barriers installed along roads, railway tracks and airports. Experts point out that it's a serious pollution issue too. Vivek Chattopadhyay, principal programme manager (Clean air and sustainable mobility), Centre for Science and Environment, said, "For all public infrastructure, SOPs, responsibility and action taken reports should be part of the regular activity. So, noise barrier installation must be addressed on a priority basis because persistent traffic noise is a major pollution issue and affects residential areas, schools, hospitals and even other commuters. Creating and installing them should always be accompanied by an SOP and maintenance protocol along with accountable agencies." He added, "Further, in consultation with CRRI, even more advanced sound-absorbing features, materials and designs should be considered. Also, there should be no unnecessary, habitual honking. Perhaps even noise meters with public displays should be installed at strategic points to make people aware of the safe limits and by how much these are being exceeded; like colour-coded AQI helps people to understand severity. "
