EF-1 tornado touched down in Hernando on Sunday: NWS
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A brief EF-1 tornado touched down near Hernando High School Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.
NWS said the tornado lasted for one minute from 10:26 p.m. to 10:27 p.m. The estimated peak winds were blowing at 95 mph.
They said the path length was 0.42 miles, and the maximum width of the tornado was 40 yards.
Thousands still without power after DeSoto County storms
This comes after WREG reported severe thunderstorms caused extensive damage to homes in DeSoto County Sunday night.
'The storm took us unaware. It just seemed to come out of nowhere. There wasn't time to hit the sirens or anything. I think we were all startled by our telephone was telling us something was going on,' said Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson.
Johnson took to Facebook to address the damage seen so far. In the post on Monday, he says approximately 7,700 people lost power due to the weather.
On Tuesday, Entergy crews are still working to restore power, and they reported that 3,913 people still do not have power.
Mayor Johnson is encouraging residents to remain patient as power restoration could take a few days.
Severe thunderstorms cause extensive damage in MS; schools closed
Emergency personnel and city crews are working to figure out just how much damage occurred and to restore power for those in need. If you need a place to go, the storm shelter on Riley Street behind Hernando Elementary is open and has power.
Areas of Interstate 55 in Hernando were blocked due to debris in the roadway, leaving drivers stuck for hours as crews worked to clear the road. The Mississippi Department of Transportation map shows that I-55 has since reopened.
Multiple traffic lights in the city are currently out due to the power outages in the area. The city of Hernando is asking that if anyone is out driving around, use caution.

On This Date: One Of America's Deadliest Tornadoes Strikes Wisconsin Town Hosting A Circus
One of America's deadliest tornadoes tore through a Wisconsin town hosting a circus more than 125 years ago. Gollmar Brothers Circus was in New Richmond, Wisconsin, on June 12, 1899, bringing a larger number of people to the town than usual. Before hitting New Richmond, three people were killed by the tornado on farms near Burkhardt and Boardman. The twister then carved a path through the middle of New Richmond just after the circus ended, according to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee. About 300 buildings were damaged or destroyed along a path 3,000 feet long and 1,000 feet wide through New Richmond. Incredibly, a 3,000 pound safe was said to have been carried a full block away. A total of 117 lives were lost in the tornado, making it the 9th deadliest on record in the U.S., according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center Flying debris from the tornado killed many of the 117 people, and 26 separate families had multiple deaths. The NWS says the tornado was easy to spot and that this may have kept the death toll from being even higher. AUSTIN (KXAN) — A tornado briefly touched down in Hays County early Thursday morning as storms moved through. The tornado threat for that area has since expired. The city's outdoor warning sirens became fully operational in August 2024. 1:20 a.m Radar shows the tornado lifted debris. KXAN is working to gather more information about the impact. The Tornado Warning was canceled around 1:18 a.m. 1:11 a.m. The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for southern Hays County early Thursday morning.
