No Aadhaar, No Tatkal ticket booking from july
NEW DELHI: To ensure fair and transparent access to online ticket booking under the Tatkal quota, the Ministry of Railways announced on Wednesday that only Aadhaar-authorised users will be able to book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and its app , effective from July 1 this year.
The Railways has also decided no agent bookings will be permitted during the first 30 minutes after Tatkal bookings open for both AC and non-AC classes. This marks the first such decisive step taken following extensive consultations between experts and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who personally analysed the process before approving the changes.
Confirming the decision, a senior Railway Ministry official said that the modifications to the Tatkal ticket booking system are aimed at enhancing user authentication and curbing misuse by fraudulent agents.
The ministry explained the new procedure: 'Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for Tatkal bookings made online starting from July 15 this year.'
It said, 'Tatkal tickets shall be available for booking through computerised PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters of Indian Railways/authorised agents only after authentication of a system-generated OTP, which shall be sent through the system on the mobile number furnished by the users at the time of booking'.

A good fix: On the IRCTC and ticket booking
The e-ticketing system of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) is one of India's most widely used e-commerce platforms. Crores of Indian rail commuters and passengers use it to book their tickets, which makes it imperative that the system is run robustly. The scale of the operation is revealing — on May 22, 2025, the IRCTC processed a staggering 31,814 tickets in 60 seconds to set a new record. Yet, the popular e-ticketing system, especially the Tatkal booking part, is plagued by issues. Extremely high demand during peak hours, particularly during the designated Tatkal booking window period, often leads to crashes and slow performance. A major concern is that the system is exploited by ticketing agents who use unfair automated tools (or bots), leading to rapidly dwindling ticket availability for passengers. These issues are what prompted the IRCTC to announce two major steps. The first was a major digital overhaul of the ticketing infrastructure using anti-bot systems to prevent unauthorised automated bookings — a measure that led to the de-activation of a whopping 2.5 crore suspect user IDs. Implementation of a content delivery network also helped improve website performance. In addition, Aadhaar verification is necessary immediately after a ticket is booked. The IRCTC has also mandated Aadhaar authentication for all Tatkal bookings, from July 1, along with OTP-based authentication. Authorised agents have been restricted from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window period. The idea behind an e-ticketing platform and the provision of Tatkal booking of tickets are to provide equitable chances for passengers to travel. Despite more train services having been introduced over the years by the Indian Railways, which is a state monopoly, demand far outstrips supply, and passengers have to rely on advanced booking and Tatkal tickets for their travel. When agents use bots to game the system, it kills the purpose of equity. Therefore, the IRCTC's steps will bring relief to passengers. That said, the Indian Railways must focus not only on easing the process of ticketing but also on elevating the passenger experience in terms of increasing its train and track capacity to fulfil travel demand, ensuring safety and enhancing its facilities. Seen in this context, while these ticketing fixes are important, the true test for the Indian Railways will be its ability to move beyond just technical and administrative solutions and undertake a fundamental expansion of its services to serve India's large passenger clientele. In a way, meaningful expansion to meet the demand will also obviate the need for reworking technological solutions yet again in the future.

Authorities decide to commence land acquisition for Sabari rail
Bringing renewed hope to more than 2,000 families across central Travancore whose properties have been marked for the long-pending Sabari rail project, the Revenue department has decided to resume land acquisition for the project. Official sources said an online high-level meeting convened by the State government on Wednesday has directed the District Collectors of Ernakulam, Idukki and Kottayam to proceed with acquiring the required land. As part of this renewed effort, the previously functional land acquisition offices at Perumbavoor and Pala will be reopened, while new offices are slated to be established in Muvattupuzha and Kanjirappally. 'Work on the project is expected to formally begin with the visit of a high-level team from the Indian Railways early next month,' sources said. The meeting also decided to retain the existing alignment of the rail line. The project is being planned in such a way that land acquisition and construction can proceed simultaneously. 24.4 hectares acquired So far, 24.4 hectares of land have been acquired for the project in the Angamaly–Kalady stretch. However, more than 200 hectares still need to be acquired across the three districts. In the first phase, land will be acquired from Kalady to Ramapuram. The second phase, covering the stretch from Ramapuram to Erumely, will follow completion of alignment surveys and a Social Impact Assessment (SIA). 'A special revenue team will be deployed for this purpose,' the sources added. As the initial notification for acquiring land for the project was issued prior to the introduction of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act in 2013, the government will have to restart the entire process in accordance with the new legislation. According to officials, a new government order (GO) for the land acquisition will be issued shortly to commence the proceedings. CM's meet The approval for the construction of the rail line connecting Angamaly and Erumely, the gateway to Sabarimala was announced after a meeting held between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi recently. The 111.48-km line was proposed in the 1997-98 Budget.
