First Covid death reported in Chandigarh; Haryana records 14 active cases, Punjab three
CHANDIGARH: A 40-year-old man who had tested positive for Covid died early this morning at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh.
The man, originally from Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh, had been referred to GMCH from Ludhiana after testing positive for Covid. He was admitted to the Covid unit of the hospital, where he was kept in isolation. This marks the first confirmed Covid-related death in Chandigarh.
Sources said the hospital authorities have not yet confirmed whether the infection was caused by the latest JN.1 variant.
Confirming the death, Medical Superintendent of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, GP Thami said the patient had been admitted to the hospital two days ago with severe respiratory problems. He tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday and died today.
'We tested him on the second day as he came with respiratory issues and was put on a ventilator and was immediately placed in isolation within the Covid ward. He had no reported comorbidities, raising further concerns about the virulence of the current strain,' said Thami.

61 Covid cases reported in Rajkot since May 19
Rajkot: Rajkot has recorded 61 Covid-19 cases since May 19, including nine fresh cases reported on June 3, according to the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC). Seven Covid cases reported in Surat
Surat: Seven new Covid-19 cases were reported in areas under the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Wednesday, including four senior citizens. As per protocol, their samples have been sent to the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) in Gandhinagar for genome sequencing. Among the cases is a 48-year-old woman doctor from Pal who is currently in home isolation. A 44-year-old homemaker from Vesu, with a history of thyroid issues, is also isolating at home with stable health. A 67-year-old woman from Varachha with thyroid issues has been admitted to Ayush Hospital. A 68-year-old retired man from Athwa, with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke is undergoing treatment at Kiran Hospital while a 66-year-old businessman from Adajan, who returned from Mumbai on June 2, has tested positive and is under home care. Others include a 68-year-old woman from Adajan and a 31-year-old man from Limbayat who works in Vapi — both are in home isolation and reported to be stable.
