Trump threatens to kill Khamenei if Americans targeted
by Naharnet Newsdesk 17 June 2025, 21:04
U.S. President Donald Trump dramatically stepped up his rhetoric against Iran's supreme leader Tuesday, saying on social media that the United States knows where Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is located but will not kill him "for now."
In another post, Trump also appeared to demand Iran's "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!" as he fueled questions about whether the United States would join Israel's attacks on Tehran's leadership and nuclear facilities.
"We know exactly where the so-called 'Supreme Leader' is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there -- We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now," Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
"But we don't want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" said Trump.
Minutes later the U.S. president followed up with another message simply saying: "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!"
Trump flew back early from the G7 summit in Canada late Monday as the conflict between Iran and key U.S. ally Israel escalated, and was set to meet top officials in the White House Situation Room on Tuesday.
The U.S. president has so far stressed that his country is not getting involved in the conflict, and has said that Iran could still take a deal to end its nuclear program that he had proposed before Israel's attacks.
But Trump has given mounting signals that Washington's intervention in some form may now be imminent.
Trump said Tuesday that "we" have "complete and total control of the skies over Iran," hailing the use of U.S.-made weaponry without explicitly mentioning Israel.
Israel, the closest U.S. ally in the Middle East, had recently made a similar claim.
Earlier, Trump told reporters on Air Force One while returning from Canada that he wanted "a real end, not a ceasefire" to the Iran-Israel conflict, and warning that "I'm not in too much of a mood to negotiate."

Macron: Next G7 leaders summit to take place at Evian in French Alps
France will host the next G7 summit at the Alpine spa resort town of Evian-les-Bains in 2026, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday. Bordering Switzerland on the shores of Lake Geneva, Evian already hosted the G7 in 2003. It was also the first time that Russia had been invited to join, although it was kicked out of the group in 2014 after it annexed Crimea from Ukraine. The leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and the European Union will meet in the summer of 2026. Reuters

Trump calls for Iran's ‘unconditional surrender', says he knows exactly where Khamanei is hiding
President Trump met with his national security team in the White House Situation Room for around one hour and 20 minutes on Tuesday to make decisions about U.S. policy towards the war between Israel and Iran. Ahead of the meeting, three U.S. officials said Trump was seriously considering joining the war and launching a U.S. strike against Iran's nuclear facilities, especially its underground uranium enrichment facility in Fordow. Trump returned early from the G7 summit to focus on Iran, telling reporters on Air Force One overnight that he wasn't interested in a 'ceasefire' but a 'real end' to the war and to Iran's nuclear program. Amid growing signs that the U.S. could strike Iran, Vice President J.D. Vance pushed back against criticism from prominent MAGA voices about Trump getting involved in the war. Trump himself signaled his thinking in a series of belligerent posts on Truth Social ahead of the Situation Room meeting.

Kremlin says it sees that Israel does not want mediation efforts with Iran amid 'galloping escalation'
The Kremlin said on Tuesday that it saw that Israel did not want mediation efforts over its conflict with Iran, now in its fifth day amid what Moscow said was "galloping escalation." Israel launched its air war with a surprise attack last week that has killed nearly the entire top echelon of Iran's military commanders and its leading nuclear scientists. Iran has responded with a barrage of strikes on Israeli cities. In a call with reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called on both sides to exercise "maximum restraint." "The situation is continuing to escalate rapidly. The level of unpredictability is absolute," he said. Peskov said that Russia's offer to mediate between the warring sides if necessary still stood, but that it saw Israel was for now not interested in seeking a peaceful solution.
