Islamic Solidarity Fund attends Tunis committee
JEDDAH: The Islamic Solidarity Fund — a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation — took part in the 38th session of the Islamic Committee of the International Crescent, with the attendance of more than 50 participants, including the chairman and members of the committee, representatives of some national Red Crescent and Red Cross societies, regional and international humanitarian organizations, member states of the OIC, observers and official guests in the Tunisian capital, Tunis.
The fund's participation in the session was part of its capacity as an observer, highlighting its more than 40-year-long relationship with the committee in supporting its activities and providing emergency humanitarian aid under the umbrella of the OIC.
On the sidelines of the session, the fund's executive director, Mohammed bin Sulaiman Aba Al-Khai, met several officials to discuss topics and exchange expertise in areas of mutual interest.

Egypt unveils plan for new desert city in latest megaproject
CAIRO: Egypt has unveiled plans for a vast new urban development west of Cairo where a man-made channel of the River Nile will eventually wind through what was once arid desert. The new city, named Jirian, meaning 'Flow' in Arabic, is part of Egypt's Nile Delta scheme, a massive agricultural initiative to reclaim about 2.5 million acres west of the original Nile Delta. The ambitious agricultural project, which started in 2021, seeks to boost production of strategic crops such as wheat and corn while reducing the North African country's food import bill. The project is the latest in a string of megaprojects launched by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in recent years, including a new administrative capital east of Cairo. While officials say these projects are key to Egypt's long-term growth, they have also contributed to the country's soaring foreign debt, which quadrupled since 2015 to reach $155.2 billion by late 2024. The country has also received billions of dollars from the International Monetary Fund and the EU to ensure its financial stability, with the EU pledging billions more last month. At a launch event on Sunday, Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli called the Jirian project 'an urban and development revolution.' He added that it would create 250,000 jobs and serve as the cornerstone of a wider development zone equivalent in size to four to five governorates. 'We are talking about full-spectrum development,' he told reporters, describing a sprawling urban zone that will include industry, logistics hubs, and homes for 'between 2.5 and 3 million families.' The government did not disclose the project's total cost, which is being developed in partnership with three major Egyptian real estate firms. The new Nile Delta project comes at a time when Egypt is already under pressure to secure its water future. With 97 percent of its fresh water sourced from the Nile, the country has been locked in a years-long dispute with Addis Ababa over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Cairo fears could reduce downstream water flows.

KSrelief extends aid to Syria, Somalia, Sudan
RIYADH: The Saudi aid agency KSrelief continues to make a significant global impact, providing critical assistance to some of the world's most vulnerable communities. The organization has distributed 2,290 food baskets and hygiene kits in Sarmada in the Idlib Governorate of the Syrian Arab Republic, benefiting 6,870 individuals. This effort is part of the second phase of a project to ease the suffering of Syrian families. KSrelief in Somalia has distributed 1,200 food baskets to the neediest families in the Baidoa district in Bay region, assisting 7,200 people and supporting food security for vulnerable groups. KSrelief in Sudan has distributed 825 food baskets to the most needy families in Blue Nile State, helping 3,986 people. This aid forms part of Saudi Arabia's broader humanitarian efforts to support the Sudanese population amid the ongoing crisis in the country. Since its launch in May 2015, KSrelief has implemented 3,438 projects worth more than $7.9 billion across 107 countries, in partnership with more than 318 organizations.

Hajj: A message of peace and unity
Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, is not merely a religious rite performed annually by Muslims, it is the greatest spiritual gathering known to humanity. It embodies the essence of unity and equality, bringing hearts together before bodies in a sacred season that transcends political boundaries, geographical divides and ethnic differences. During this blessed season, Muslims from all corners of the world demonstrate how diversity can be a source of strength, not weakness, when they come together with shared purpose, hearts directed toward their Creator, and sincere intentions seeking forgiveness and unity. It is an eloquent annual lesson in tolerance and openness — one whose impact should extend beyond the spiritual realm to relations between nations and peoples. We believe that Hajj is not only an individual obligation but also an annual opportunity to renew the values of Islamic solidarity and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among nations. Just as pilgrims gather on the same plain, Muslims must also unite in the spheres of politics, dialogue and cooperation — for the benefit of their peoples and the stability of their homelands. Moreover, they must extend their hands with love and peace to all nations, as commanded by Allah. Here, the significant role of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation becomes evident. As the collective umbrella organization for the Islamic world, it must serve as a platform to bridge perspectives, promote development and defend the causes and interests of its member states — foremost among them being the Palestinian cause and the challenges facing Muslim minorities around the globe. Hajj teaches us that unity is not a choice — it is a necessity. The voice of wisdom resonates more powerfully when it emerges from a united stance and a shared vision. From our diplomatic position, we see Hajj as an opportunity for the meeting of diverse Islamic cultures, the exchange of experiences and the deepening of cooperation among Muslim peoples. This is something all of us in diplomatic institutions must cherish and work to establish as a lasting value that transcends time and place. My country, the Republic of Djibouti, through its balanced and moderate political positions and its membership of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, seeks to remain a bridge for communication and dialogue and a platform for coordination among Islamic nations on various issues. This stems from its belief that the major challenges facing our Ummah can only be overcome through unity of word and concerted efforts.
