Khalil Mack 'couldn't give up on that dream' of winning with the Chargers
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Khalil Mack mulled retirement early in the offseason. It didn't take long for him to decide to return to the Los Angeles Chargers.
He agreed on a contract extension in March, never becoming an unrestricted free agent.
'Got tremendous leadership here, very familiar with guys already here,' he said Wednesday at minicamp. 'It was a no-brainer.'
Mack, who turned 34 in February, is in his 12th season in the league and fourth with the Chargers. Despite nine Pro Bowl selections and a Defensive Player of the Year honor, he has never won a playoff game in five appearances.
'You're chasing that feeling of wanting to win,' Mack said. 'I couldn't give up on that dream and that goal for myself and the franchise.'
Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter said having Mack return 'means everything.'
'Khalil is one of the best ever to do it,' he said.
Mack was at the Chargers facility to train in February and March, setting a tone for his teammates.
'The impact that he had on other people to train at his level is pretty incredible,' Minter said. 'For young guys to have him around, it just makes everybody better.'
Around the same time Mack re-signed, the Chargers released defensive end Joey Bosa. He later signed with the Buffalo Bills.
'I texted him the other day saying it was weird not having him in the room breaking the silence with his little awkward jokes,' Mack said.
Second-year cornerback Tarheeb Still influenced Mack's decision to stay.
'Just the mindset he has. His is the same approach and mindset when I train,' Mack said. 'I want to be a machine, move people easy.'
Will this be Mack's final season?
'I'm trying not to speak too fast or too far in the future,' he said. 'My wife says, 'You keep saying you're going to retire. Why you keep doing that?''

Dolphins' Bradley Chubb's Contract Named One of NFL's Worst
Dolphins' Bradley Chubb's Contract Named One of NFL's Worst originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Miami Dolphins have made a habit of giving players big contracts or extensions in recent years. That list includes players like Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, Jalen Ramsey, and Jaylen Waddle, who all signed their deals since 2022. Advertisement Now, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox named Chubb's contract one of the worst in the NFL as the 2025 season draws closer. The former Pro Bowl pass-rusher is on a three-year contract worth up to $54.5 million. "To be fair, this contract was a lot worse before Bradley Chubb agreed to take less money on a revised deal in March," Knox said. That initial extension Chubb signed was for $110 million over five years back in 2022 after he was traded from the Denver Broncos to the Dolphins. "That was a lot of money to give a pass-rusher with 26 sacks and one Pro Bowl on his resume. It was probably a bad deal, given Chubb's significant injury history—which may have foreshadowed issues in Miami," Knox wrote. Miami Dolphins linebacker Bradley Chubb (2) looks during training camp at Baptist Health Training Navarro-Imagn Images Knox noted Chubb's torn ACL in 2019 and season-ending ankle surgery in 2022. But the big injury that has sidelined him since New Year's Eve of 2023 was the torn ACL, meniscus, and patellar tendon that he suffered. Advertisement Chubb had 11 sacks that year, playing in 16 games. It was the only season he had double-digit sacks and the only season he played as many as 16 games since his rookie year in 2018. "The Dolphins have still guaranteed $33.5 million over the next three years to a soon-to-be 29-year-old second-tier pass-rusher," Knox said. "For a franchise that may be closer to a reset than a deep playoff run, that's a bad deal." Haason Reddick dismisses idea he is trying to "regain his reputation"
Haason Reddick heard the criticism and knew a question about his absence at the Buccaneers' organized team activities was coming. So, the edge rusher made a preemptive statement following a mandatory minicamp practice. 'I'll address it before y'all do: I know everybody was concerned about me not showing up at [OTAs], but for me, I definitely made sure to stay in shape,' Reddick, 30, said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. 'I think I showed that to everybody out here. 'I don't think it should've been a question, but [I] just had some things to button up on as I get ready to make this transition down here so that way, once I get here, I don't have to worry about [anything] back there at home.' In 2024, Reddick didn't show up for six months after the Eagles traded him to the Jets. He missed seven regular-season games before agreeing to an adjusted contract. After signing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Bucs in March, Reddick went to work with his personal trainer, Kenny Williams, in Philadelphia. He is trying to get back to being a Pro Bowl pass rusher. Reddick had only one sack and three quarterback hits in 10 games last season, ending his streak of four consecutive double-digit sack seasons. But he doesn't buy into needing to 'regain his reputation' as a top edge rusher. 'Regain my reputation as a premier pass rusher?' Reddick said. 'Regain my rep, huh? Let's just say, I am motivated but not for that type of stuff, right? Like, I don't care what people think about me, to be honest. People can say whatever they want. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. . . . What you talk about, things like that, as long as I'm in a great place and a safe space and my mental is strong? That's the only thing that I'm worried about.'
