Murder suspect ‘dumped dog-walker's phone to put police off trail'

Telegraph4 days ago

A fugitive accused of murdering a grandmother while she was walking her dog took her phone to a town centre three days later and dumped it there to 'put the police off the trail', a court heard.
Prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC told jurors at Ipswich Crown Court that Roy Barclay, 56, had been 'unlawfully at large' for two years at the time he was said to have killed Anita Rose.
The mother-of-six, who was 57, was found injured by a cyclist near a sewage works in Brantham, Suffolk on July 24 last year.
She died four days later in hospital of traumatic head injuries.
Barclay, of no fixed address, denies her murder.
Mr Paxton, continuing to open the prosecution case on Friday, said Mr Barclay had looked at news articles about the incident in the days after the attack.
He said that in one article viewed by Mr Barclay, senior police officer Mike Brown appealed for information about Ms Rose's iPhone, which the officer said could hold 'key information'.
The prosecutor said that 'was a signal to cunning Roy Barclay that he needed to get rid of that phone'.
'Mike Brown was right and that explains what was to follow the very next day in Ipswich town centre on July 27,' said Mr Paxton.
'Roy Barclay dumps Anita's iPhone after Mr Brown has told the public in an article Mr Barclay has viewed about the significance of that phone.'
He said that the 'dropping of Anita's phone in Ipswich' was 'to put the police off the trail'.
The barrister said that Mr Barclay was captured on CCTV footage in Upper Orwell Street on July 27 with a 'carrier bag in his left hand', which prosecutors say contained Ms Rose's phone.
He said Mr Barclay entered a seating area with the bag and was later seen to emerge from the seating area without it.
He said a couple, Mr Ichim and Ms Baiculescu, were captured on CCTV minutes later entering then emerging from the seating area, and 'there's an exchange of an item' between them, which Mr Paxton said was Ms Rose's phone.
'Within a minute or so when that phone is switched on, that's Anita's phone, it alerts the police,' Mr Paxton said.
He said that 'numerous police officers flooded the area and found the unsuspecting Mr Ichim and Ms Baiculescu' in a mobile phone and vape shop. The barrister said 'they had paid for a factory reset of the phone' but police arrived before this was done.
He said Mr Ichim was arrested and later released, adding: 'Many people at times were treated as suspects but were later released without charge.'
He said 'nobody other than Anita knew the password' to the phone, and police had not been able to get into it.
Mr Paxton said Barclay showed an 'arrogance in keeping the items he did as trophies, believing perhaps that he could get away with murder'.
The barrister had earlier told the trial that Ms Rose's pink jacket, phone case and Samsung earbuds were found at camps Barclay had used.
Mr Paxton said Barclay had also searched online for four prisons 'no doubt wondering if caught which prison he would end up in', and that this was done on July 25, the day after Ms Rose was attacked.
The barrister earlier told jurors that Barclay had 'lived off-grid' and slept in 'various makeshift camps'.
'He had been on the run trying to avoid the police and authorities to try and avoid being recalled back to prison,' Mr Paxton said.
He said it took a 'piece of luck for police to have contact with' Mr Barclay, when Detective Constable Barry Simpson 'saw a male walking quickly along the road' on Oct 15.
The officer, who was in an unmarked car and working on the murder investigation, 'thought the male looked similar to an image he had seen in the murder inquiry', and stopped to speak with him.
Mr Paxton said the man was Mr Barclay, but that he 'lied' to Det Con Simpson, and gave his name as John Lesley, providing a false home address and saying he worked as a gardener.
The prosecutor said the officer took photos of Mr Barclay 'surreptitiously', and he was allowed on his way, but a 'manhunt' started the following day when officers determined that the man was not John Lesley.
He said Ms Rose was subjected to 'numerous kicks, stamps and blows being delivered to her face, head and body' in a 'vicious and brutal attack'.

The devastating mystery gripping the heir of Blenheim Palace and his desperate family - and the film star battling abuse trauma: RICHARD EDEN'S DIARY

Mystery at Blenheim Palace: Heir's dog vanishes He's blessed with a glamorous wife, two wonderful young daughters – and will, one day, inherit Blenheim Palace, arguably the most sumptuous family seat in Britain, plus its 12,000-acre estate. But never assume that the Marquess of Blandford, the 12th Duke of Marlborough's son and heir, is immune to the trials and tribulations that can afflict us all. George Spencer-Churchill's young labrador, Gecko, went missing at the weekend. Perhaps even more disquietingly, she remains unaccounted for, even though there was a tracker in her distinctive pink collar. This allowed Gecko's movements to be traced to the northernmost part of Woodstock, the Oxfordshire town near Blenheim. That was shortly before 2pm on Sunday. But thereafter the trail ran cold – prompting George, 32, and his wife Camilla, 38, both pictured, to seek assistance from the police, who have issued a public appeal in a bid to find Gecko. There is another element which adds to their heartache. I understand that, at the time Gecko disappeared, she was in the care of a trusted third party. Friends and family have been putting up posters alerting locals. 'If someone has stolen her, then people will have read about her,' one tells me. George certainly won't be daunted by the challenge. In 2019, he and two of his wife's cousins rowed across the Atlantic in 35 days, securing themselves a Guinness World Record for the 'fastest time for a related team of four to row the Atlantic east to west'. I profoundly hope that the Spencer-Churchill motto – 'faithful but unfortunate' – does not hold true for Gecko. BREAKING NEWS Tragic cause of death of three sisters found dead at campsite after vanishing with 'killer' father

Authorities in Washington have apparently determined exactly how a homeless father-of-three killed his young daughters as the search for the suspect continues. Paityn, nine, Evelyn, eight, and Olivia Decker, five, appeared to have died of asphyxiation, according to a report filed with the Chelan County Superior Court that was obtained by Fox 13. The three sisters had vanished after a three-hour visit with their father Travis Decker, sparking a days-long manhunt before their bodies were located on Monday. Police had swarmed around Rock Island Campground in Leavenworth, blocking traffic and sending drivers in the other direction after they found the father's truck at around 3.45pm on Monday. Decker, 32, is now charged with three counts of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, and police say the veteran could 'pose a significant risk if approached' as he has extensive combat training. It is unclear if he is armed. He does not have permanent housing and is known to stay at hotels and campgrounds, police said. His ex-wife, the girls' mother, had been particularly worried because he has 'really struggled since he left the military.' 'His mental health can be hard sometimes,' she told KIRO 7. The Wenatchee Police Department offered their 'sincere and deep heartfelt condolences,' to the family. Authorities found Decker's truck around 3:45pm near Rock Island Campground. While searching the area, the girls' bodies were found, but Decker was nowhere to be seen. A SWAT team was called to the campground around 5pm yesterday and the area was shut down between 7pm and 9pm. Travis Decker is described as 5'8" and 190 pounds, with black hair worn in a ponytail and brown eyes. The girls were last seen alive at their mother's house, where Decker picked them up for a scheduled three-hour visit. The visitation was part of their parenting plan, but an alarm was raised after Decker didn't return with the girls on Friday. The girls' mother, Whitney, reported the girls missing at 9:45pm on Friday and police began working to determine where the father and the children were. The Washington State Patrol was contacted about issuing an AMBER Alert, but none was given as it did not meet criteria, Wenatchee Police Department said. The Endangered and Missing Persons Alert (EMPA) was issued on Saturday after 'additional information' was provided, the police department said. Law enforcement is asking the public for help in finding Decker, but advised locals not to approach him. A GoFundMe was started for the mother-of-three, raising $30,000 in less than a day. 'These girls were true light in this world and and it is a darker place without them. I will miss seeing their sweet little faces,' the fundraiser read. 'Send Whitney all of your prayers, love and support. Take some time to today to tell someone you love them.'

Doctor warns of 'highly toxic' effect of popular natural remedy - after it puts toddler in a coma

Ingesting tea tree oil could result in life-threatening organ damage, seizures and even a coma, a GP has warned. According to Dr Sermed Mezher, a UK based doctor, swallowing tiny amounts of the essential oil can result in serious poisoning 'within a minute'. In an Instagram video that has so far been viewed over 2.1million times, Dr Mezher explained the risks in response to a video of a young boy who ended up in a coma after swallowing it. Dr Mezher said: 'Swallowing tea tree oil can be highly toxic due to its potent chemical composition, which includes terpinen-4-ol, cineole, and other volatile compounds.' Terpinen-4-ol is the most abundant compound in tea tree oil—extracted from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree—which posses antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. However when ingested, the oil can rapidly affect the nervous system, leading to drowsiness, loss of coordination and seizures. In 2022 alone, the US poison control centre treated more than 2,200 cases of toxicity linked to tea tree oil. 'One of them was a 23-month-old boy who drank just 10mls which put him in a coma for five hours until he thankfully recovered,' Dr Mezher explained. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sermed Mezher (@drsermedmezher) He added that its supposed benefits for skin health may also be bogus. 'Tree oil has been sold as a miracle cure to multiple skin conditions, and yet there's very little evidence that it works,' he said. A 2023 study found that tea tree oil has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that helped treat teenage and adult acne—though researchers cautioned it was not possible to draw conclusions on its safety. The poison control centre treated twice as many cases of toxicity caused by tea tree oil compared to any other essential oil, including cinnamon, clove and eucalyptus oil. 'I don't know about you, but I am not keeping this at home,' Dr Mezher cautioned. As well as attacking the nervous system, ingesting the 'horrifically toxic' product can also irritate the gastrointestinal tract, causing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. 'Tea tree oil is also harsh on the liver,' Dr Mezher added. 'The body struggles to metabolise its toxic components, potentially leading to organ damage with repeated or high-dose exposure.' 'Because tea tree oil absorbs quickly into the bloodstream, poisoning symptoms can appear within minutes to a few hours. 'If ingestion occurs, immediate medical attention is essential to prevent serious complications.' The NHS warns against trying to make someone who has swallowed something poisonous and is unconscious sick, and recommends instead putting them in the recovery position until an ambulance arrives. Tea tree oil, a common ingredient in many skincare products, has previously been linked to a number of superbug infections including MRSA—a type of bacteria that is resistant to treatment and causes life-threatening infection. US scientists discovered that repeated low-dose use of the essential oil made the MRSA bacteria, as well as and salmonella, more resistant to antibiotics. Professor David McDowell, from the University of Ulster, warned that people who use tea tree oil on their skin repeatedly to treat acne, could be 'stressing' the bacteria on the skin rather than killing it—increasing their resistance to antibiotics. 'Although tea tree oil may be an effective antimicrobial agent when appropriately used at high concentrations, its application at low concentrations may contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance in human pathogens,' he warned.
