U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen reintroduces to bipartisan internet bills
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen has announced he will reintroduce two bills that will expand access to affordable high speed internet.
The Rural Broadband Assistance Act and the ReConnecting Rural America Act aim to make affordable high-speed internet across not only Illinois but the country as a whole more accessible, said Britany Hardaway, the Rockford Democrat's spokesperson.
'Every hometown in Illinois deserves the necessary tools to stay connected and grow,' said Sorensen. 'Whether it's helping our neighbors get the support they need to apply for broadband funding or strengthening programs that bring faster internet to places that need it most, these bills are about making sure rural America isn't left behind.'
The goal of the Rural Broadband Assistance Act bill is to make it easier for small towns, local governments, non-profits and rural businesses to receive expert support when they apply for broadband funding, Hardaway said.
The ReConnecting Rural America Act will strengthen and reauthorize the U.S. Department of Agriculture's ReConnect Program, which looks to improve internet service speed requirements and ensure that communities most in need are prioritized for funding, she said.
Sorensen has been a representative of Illinois' 17th congressional district, which is made up of an area that includes Rockford, Peoria, Bloomington and the Illinois side of the Quad Cities, since 2023, according to his website.

Former Stewartville home park community operator agrees to pay $135,000 in settlement
Jun. 12—ST. PAUL — The former owner and operator of a manufactured home park community in Stewartville agreed to pay $135,000 after facing allegations that it submitted false claims to the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency. The state alleged that Sun Communities, Inc. violated three counts of the Minnesota False Claims Act, an act that works to combat fraud against the government. The civil complaint, filed in March 2024, alleged that Sun Communities attempted to evict several tenants for not paying their rent. However, in these instances, Sun Communities received the tenants' payments through RentHelpMN, a federally funded program created after COVID-19 that provides financial support to help Minnesota families pay rent. According to the complaint, Sun Communities "repeatedly affirmed" that it would not evict tenants for not paying rent after receiving their rent payments through the program. RentHelpMN required landlords like Sun Communities to comply with the "statutory and regulatory prohibition on evicting tenants." The state alleged that Sun Communities applied RentHelpMN to pay for "unlawful late fees, pet fees" and other unauthorized fees. Hennepin County District Judge Susan Burke ordered that $33,824.09 of the $135,000 be paid as restitution, which will be credited to the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency. "What Sun Communities did was unlawful," Attorney General Keith Ellison said in a release. "The pandemic created economic hardship, so the government stepped up and helped struggling families make rent payments. It is disappointing that any property owner would accept those payments and then still try to evict their tenants. Today, we are holding one of those property owners accountable. I am grateful to the whistleblower who helped bring this wrongdoing to light, and I encourage other Minnesotans who believe government funds are being misused to contact my office." Sun Communities, Inc. previously owned and operated the community located at 105 20 St. NW, Stewartville.

Rep. Mannion defends house floor outburst as act of patriotism: ‘I have to stop the rise of authoritarian government'
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSYR-TV) — Congressman John Mannion is defending his vulgar outburst towards a fellow congressman on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives as an act of patriotism. Over a televised feed of the House vote, shouting can be heard in a distant part of the room. It's Representative Mannion saying, in part: 'get over there and get some f**king balls. Tell them. Tell them. You know who I am.' The comments were directed at Republican Congressman Mike Lawler, also of New York. Mannion's office said the congressman was already fired up about Senator Alex Padilla being removed from a press briefing hosted by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The tension continued into a Democrat-hosted press conference outside the house floor, which then spilled onto the house floor when the argument began the congressman began. Lawler posted a response, also profane, to his campaign's social media: 'John Mannion was entirely unhinged and unprofessional. That was a shameful display that exposed his complete lack of temperament. No wonder numerous staffers have previously alleged a toxic work environment. He should go seek help for anger management — and f**k off.' Mannion's office responded to NewsChannel 9's request for comment.
