Pune: An 82-year-old woman sleeping outside her house because of the unbearable heat was attacked and mauled to death by a leopard at Inamgaon village in Shirur early on Friday.
Her decapitated body was later spotted in a sugar cane field by forest officials.

This was the first death in a leopard attack in the district this year, forest officials said.

In December last year, a 4-year-old girl was killed in a leopard attack in Shirur at Pimpalsuti village, around 4km from the site of Friday's attack.
A senior forest official said that the woman, who had been suffering from asthma, was sleeping in the open as she could not sleep inside her house due to extreme heat. "The leopard first attacked the two dogs sleeping near the victim. However, the dogs managed to escape, following which the big cat attacked the woman and dragged her by her neck to a nearby sugar cane field," an official said.
The leopard attacked only her neck and there were no other injuries on other parts of her body, he said.
Smita Rajhans, assistant conservator of forest, Junnar Forest Division, said, "A team immediately went to the spot after the forest department was informed about the incident around 5.45 am. We conducted preliminary investigation as per the protocol. It was confirmed that the woman died in a leopard attack. Later, the body was sent for post-mortem."
The forest department has deployed cages at five places to capture the big cat. Additionally, trap cameras have been installed at nine places. Two rotating cameras have also been installed.
ANIDERS (Animal Intrusion Detection and Repellent System), machines have also been installed in the area as a preventive measure, Rajhans said. These machines are used to deter leopards and other wild animals from entering human habitations.
The forest department has already set up a base camp at Nhavare, a village located around 5-6 km from the attack site, considering the increased presence of leopards in the area.
Rajhans said that leopard sightings have increased in areas around Shirur and Daund. "The leopard population is rapidly increasing, and they need a new territory every two years. Hence, a large number of them are migrating towards Shirur and Daund, particularly around rivers, as these areas are also witnessing increased sugar cane farming," she said. |

450kg paneer seized in raid in Chandigarh's Sector 26

1 2 Chandigarh: In a major crackdown on unauthorised food businesses, the food safety administration of the Chandigarh health department conducted a surprise raid early Wednesday morning in Bapudham Colony, Sector-26, seizing approximately 450 kg of paneer and other dairy products from a shop and a vehicle. The raid began around 7 am at house no. 714/2, where food safety officers discovered a large quantity of paneer, some stored inside the shop and a significant portion in a pickup vehicle parked outside. In addition to paneer, samples of desi ghee and dahi were also seized. All seized samples will be sent to a food analyst laboratory authorised by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). "Suitable action shall be initiated against the operator if it is found non-conforming to the standards," said an official. Also, two challans were issued under Section 63 of the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006, one to the shopkeeper and another to the vehicle operator, for selling food items for public consumption without a valid FSSAI licence. Director health services, UT Chandigarh, has urged residents to remain vigilant while purchasing food items and to buy only from licenced vendors who maintain hygiene and use quality ingredients. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The department also encouraged the public to report any suspicious food practices to the department of food safety & standards, located at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16. Sukhwinder Singh, designated officer-cum-licensing authority for food safety, cautioned consumers against being misled by unusually low prices. "The cost of paneer cannot be as low as Rs 250 per kg, as it takes about 3 litres of milk with sufficient fat content to produce 1 kg of paneer. The processing cost alone would exceed Rs 300," he explained. Home Test for Fake vs Real Paneer To check the purity of paneer at home boil a small piece of paneer in a pan. Add a few drops of iodine tincture. If the paneer turns blue, it may be artificial or adulterated. If it retains its original colour, it is likely pure. Also, one can let the boiled paneer cool in water. Add some toor dal to the water and let it rest for 10 minutes. If the water turns light red, the paneer may be contaminated. If the colour doesn't change, go ahead and enjoy your paneer.

The FIR under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered on June 9 at Ulwe police station by Mumbai ACB unit's police inspector Krushna Mekhale. Mekhale said the disproportionate assets case against Kadam is being further probed by Mumbai ACB unit's assistant commissioner of police Suresh Shirshat. Mekhale stated that following Kadam's arrest last Oct, he spent six days in police custody at ACB's Worli unit, followed by over a month in judicial custody before securing bail from the High Court. 37 criminals arrested in 33 encounters in Pratapgarh in past 11 months

1 2 P rayagraj: In the past 11 months, as many as 37 criminals were arrested along with their 54 accomplices in a total of 33 police encounters in the neighbouring Pratapgarh district. Most of these criminals carried cash rewards ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 for their arrest. Pratapgarh police also arrested over 110 gangsters and history-sheeters,. SP (Pratapgarh) Dr Anil Kumar told TOI, "Cops have demonstrated excellent competence in surveillance and crime prevention, particularly in monitoring criminal activities involving gangsters and history-sheeters." In the past week, five criminals with criminal records and wanted by police in Pratapgarh, Amethi, Sultanpur, and other districts were injured in separate encounters in Lalganj, Baghrai, Kandhai, Leelapur, and Sangipur police circles. Notorious criminals, including Panchlal Verma, Hasamtullah, Virendra Yadav, Pinku and Abdul Rab, were also injured and arrested in separate encounters. Interestingly, women cops have also played vital roles in building an intelligence network to tighten the noose around criminals and gangsters and even managed to arrest seven women with criminal records so far. As part of Pratapgarh district police's enhanced crime-fighting initiative, cops posted in all 26 police stations were assigned one specific target (one cop – one criminal) to enlist criminals circle/thana-wise, surveil their activities and ensure stern actions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Additionally, anti-Romeo squad members are also engaged with women and girls in the community, raising awareness about emergency helplines such as 1090, 1076, and Dial 112. The SP, meanwhile, said, "To build up an intelligence network of gangsters, history-sheeters, and professional criminals, every beat constable, both men and women, are being assigned special tasks to maintain a strict eye on the activities of wanted criminals and initiate concrete action to ensure their arrests in all 26 police stations of the district." The SP claims that the revised strategy has helped cops compile updated inputs on lawbreakers as well as a new beat system where officers focus on specific criminals in their designated areas. Moreover, outstanding performance is recognised through cash rewards and certificates, and over 70 policemen were felicitated with rewards and certificates. Notably, all beat constables are armed with the 'Prahari' app, wherein they are updating details of prominent places in their area, reputed persons, updates on criminals and gangsters whether lodged in jail or on bail, religious places, banks, etc. According to the SP, officers have compiled thana-wise lists of criminals, implementing a one officer-one criminal monitoring system to dismantle criminal networks in the district and surrounding areas. Pratapgarh police have also recorded the highest number of FIRs under the Gangsters Act (exceeding 130) in the state. Both male and female police officers received recognition for their achievements. Women officers particularly excelled in intelligence gathering (Suragkasi), leading to the arrest of more than 30 suspects involved in vehicle theft and robbery.
