Local dinner to benefit Hurricane Helene victims
CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) — Some notable community members are coming together to help those affected by Hurricane Helene.
They're hosting a benefit dinner on Saturday, Feb. 22 at A La Cart Catering on Lisbon Street in Canfield. The event will be emceed by 570 WKBN's Dan Rivers and feature guest speaker Kelly 'The Ghost' Pavlik, former middleweight champion of the world.
For $30 a ticket or $50 per couple, attendees will get pasta, salad, rolls, dessert and beverages. They'll also get to hear a personal testimony from Mike Young, a Berlin Township construction worker and farmer who has made several trips to North Carolina to support victims of Helene.
The event will also have live music by Shawn and Shane, a basket raffle, a 50/50 raffle and an auction of work by local artists, Ray Simon and Ron Moore Jr.

Stay alert amid ongoing floods
Radar estimates suggest that Marshfield received between 5″ to 7″ of rainfall between Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon. This heavy rain led to major flooding in parts of Webster, Greene, Wright, Pulaski, and Laclede counties. The heavy rain led to multiple water rescues in Webster County, and some roads have been washed out due to the floodwaters. That's what already happened, and looking ahead reveals more rain and flooding likely on both Friday morning and Saturday morning. The Ozarks are saturated and any additional rain will easily lead to flood problems. Here are some flood safety tips to keep in mind during this very wet pattern. Turn Around, Don't DrownWe've all heard this one, but did you know that half of all flood-related fatalities involve a vehicle? There have been 42 flood deaths in the U.S. through April 2025. 29 of those 42 involved a vehicle. 42 of 77 flood deaths in 2023 involved a vehicle. The ratio was skewed a bit in 2024 thanks to Hurricane Helene's impacts in Appalachia. A total of 181 flood fatalities were reported in 2024 with 66 of those involving a vehicle. Flowing water creates pressure on an object such as a vehicle. The greater the water depth or the greater the coverage of the flowing water on an object, the greater the force on the object. A road surface also becomes slippery when wet, causing a vehicle to lose traction more easily. It takes less than a foot of slow-moving water to sweep a vehicle off the road, let alone stall out the engine in standing water. 6 inches of fast-moving water will sweep away most vehicles, including heavier SUVs and trucks. It's a good idea to check the MoDOT Traveller Information Map when flooding is a risk to see where roads may be impacted by flooding. Know Where to Go Know where to go in the event of a flood in your area. Where is the higher ground? What route should I take to get there? Can I help my neighbors? It's important to understand your flood risk before flooding occurs. Consult FEMA's flood risk map How to Prepare Some good items to keep around to help you be prepared for flooding are sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting, plastic trash bags, lumber, shovels, work boots, and gloves. It's also a good idea to contact your county emergency management agency to learn more about how to properly protect your home if you live in a flood-prone area. Spotty severe storm today as it stays hazy, hot, humid
Happy Thursday! We're almost to Friday, and like a broken record, we're turning active again. Our late week forecast will feature a one-two punch of strong to severe storms, and it all begins today. This morning, it's warm and muggy with hazy sunshine and dissipating dense fog. No need to bundle up for readings that are starting off in the 60s/70s. However, please take it easy in those areas of lower visibility and be mindful of today's 'Moderate' Air Quality Index. Highs will scoot back into the upper 70s to middle 80s. Dew point temperatures will rise into the mid 60s and south winds will become a bit more blustery as a cold front arrives this afternoon. Those weather ingredients will help to stir up a marginal risk for isolated severe storms. Any one storm will present with torrential downpours, strong winds, and the potential for small hail. That storm threat will diminish after sunset with a leftover shower past midnight. Lows will dip into the 60s. We're close to 80 again by Friday afternoon. However, our cold front from today will start to stall out in southern New England. That stalled boundary will help to initiate another marginal risk for severe storms from central to southern Vermont and the Upper Valley. Once that first round of active weather passes through, a more consolidated low pressure system will impact the North Country and Upper Valley for Saturday. Saturday is not a complete wash of a day, but it will feature periods of rain and embedded downpours. Near seasonable high temperatures in the lower to middle 70s are expected Saturday and even Sunday as the showers start to wind down.
