BN at 51: Zahid hails spirit of democracy, unity across generations
KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) continues to uphold deep-rooted principles of democracy, champion inclusive development and nurture national unity that grows stronger across generations, its chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
He said for over half a century, BN has been a political platform that embraces diversity, bridges divides and unites Malaysians under a common vision of a peaceful, prosperous and resilient nation.
'Alhamdulillah, today marks the 51st anniversary of Barisan Nasional – a political institution that has weathered the tides of history and remains steadfast as a pillar in the nation-building journey of Malaysia.
'In the face of changing times, as global currents shift and political winds change direction, Barisan Nasional stands firm and unwavering,' Zahid said in a Facebook post today.
The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed appreciation to all BN members, party machinery, leaders at every level and loyal supporters who have stood by the coalition through both triumphs and trials.
'Your loyalty is our strength. Your spirit breathes life into this struggle.
'May this 51st anniversary serve as a moment of reflection, inspiration and renewed determination as we forge ahead to shape a more meaningful chapter in our shared history. May this struggle be blessed and guided by divine wisdom. Long live Barisan Nasional!' he said.

Zahid hails London visit as bridge to reinforce Malaysia-UK ties
LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described his four-day working visit to the United Kingdom which concluded Wednesday as a bridge to strengthen bilateral relations. Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the visit, filled with discussions and programmes, differed from previous visits as he had the opportunity to personally witness the commitment of students sponsored by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) at University College London (UCL) during a session with them. "…we (delegation) saw their commitment not only to acquiring knowledge but also to acting as catalysts for Generation Z and Generation Alpha. When they come here and gain knowledge, then return to Malaysia, they will contribute not only to their professions but to other fields as well, providing motivation especially to Generation Alpha and the millennial generation," he told a press conference here upon the conclusion of his visit. Additionally, Zahid shared that Malaysia's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) received very positive feedback from the university and students who were excited about the government's game-changing initiatives. "…we are aware of the government's aim to create 60,000 high-tech engineering job opportunities, and we have requested for the Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes to be expedited," he said. Beyond TVET, the visit also strengthened cooperation in rural development, renewable energy, and climate resilience through Zahid's meeting with the UK's Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed. The meeting also discussed collaboration in rural transformation, disaster management, water security, and investments in green energy, including the reactivation of the Asean Power Grid. During the visit, Malaysia also proposed the use of green sukuk for climate financing and efforts to lead the global halal ecosystem through the World Halal Council and a unified halal logo. Both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing trade relations under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and through private sector cooperation. Through the Malaysia-UK franchise business dialogue held during the visit, Ahmad Zahid expressed hope that it would help Malaysian franchise brands penetrate the UK market by 2026. Zahid also expressed confidence that the launch of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VMY2026) in the UK would expand collaboration with UK industry players, including airlines, to attract more UK tourists to Malaysia.

Anwar shares royal compliment on Malaysia's medical expertise
PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah praised the quality and expertise of doctors at the National Heart Institute (IJN) after receiving treatment there. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this during the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." "His Majesty told me that, as someone with exposure to and experience with some of the world's best medical centres, he was very satisfied with the quality of service, excellence, and expertise of our doctors at IJN," he said. Anwar added that while the government welcomes criticism, Malaysians should also recognise national achievements, especially in healthcare. "So while we allow criticism, which is not a problem, we must also recognise the strengths we have, and there must be the drive to push ourselves to do better," he said. The Sultan of Brunei was in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th Asean Summit with other regional leaders. On May 27, he was reportedly feeling fatigued and was advised by health experts to rest at IJN. Anwar also spoke about his conversation with President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during which he asked why Malaysia was chosen despite limited bilateral trade. "His answer was that he follows developments here and sees Malaysia as a country on the rise, with significant potential. That's why he chose to come," he said. Embaló arrived today for a three-day visit—his first since taking office as president in February 2020. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.

Timely boost for Harimau Malaya's Asian Cup campaign
KUALA LUMPUR: The Harimau Malaya squad welcomed a timely boost ahead of their Group F AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier match against Vietnam at the National Stadium Bukit Jalil on June 10, following the inclusion of four new heritage players for the country. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) announced today in a statement that the four players are striker Rodrigo Holgado from Colombian club America de Cali, Sabah FC defender Jon Irazabal from Azerbaijan, Velez Sarsfield striker Imanol Machuca from Argentina, and Istanbul Basaksehir striker Joao Figueiredo from Turkey. 'All four players have been undergoing training sessions with the team for several days and have shown very impressive performances. As quality players, they are well prepared to strengthen the national squad to realize the dreams of all Malaysians,' the statement read. Meanwhile, Machuca, 25, stated that the opportunity to wear the national team colours is very special and a great honor for him. Holgado, 29, admitted that he has fallen in love with the atmosphere in Malaysia and is ready to give his all for the team coached by Peter Cklamovski. Irazabal, 28, shared his excitement about playing for the national squad, describing it as an unique moment, while Figueiredo, 29, expressed his desire to go further with Harimau Malaya on the Asian stage.
