
UK strawberries large size warning to supermarket shoppers
A bright and sunny March and April have been perfect for British strawberries, mostly grown in polytunnels. As a result, plants are yielding giant 50g berries. It's not just about size - the flavour is excellent too - with a great flavour and a natural sweetness.
Even better, many supermarkets have so many berries, they are discounting prices, so customers can make the most of the summer staple.
Ricky Zeiderman, culinary director at BergHOFF GB, says: "The strawberries hitting shelves this month are larger and sweeter than we usually see, and that's down to a mix of warm spring sunshine and cool overnight temperatures. It's a weather pattern growers love because it pushes both size and flavour at once.
"What most people don't realise is that these plumper strawberries are actually brilliant for more than just puddings. Because they hold their shape and work beautifully when roasted with balsamic, stirred into risottos for a sweet-savoury twist, or even grilled on skewers for summer barbecues.
"When the fruit is this good, it's worth thinking beyond just cream and meringue."
What to make with giant strawberries
To celebrate the bumper strawberry harvest, Ricky has come up with this budget-friendly Victoria Sponge recipe.
"With the price of home baking soaring in recent years, baking a sponge has turned from an affordable treat to a costly indulgence," he says.
"When looking for a budget meal and dessert, try this delicious food with butter cream and fresh strawberries. Switching out some ingredients will make a vegan cake.

Ingredients
200g plain flour + 2 tsp baking powder, instead of self raising flour
150g margarine, as a butter replacement (also keeping cake fresh)
150g brown sugar, instead of caster sugar
3 tbsp vegetable oil for extra moisture
2 eggs or ½ cup yogurt as a cheaper alternative
½ tsp vanilla essence instead of pure vanilla extract
100ml milk, oat milk, coconut milk or alternative for a vegan option
100g jam, strawberry jam and raspberry, home-made or cheaper works great.
100ml whipped cream or 100g Greek yogurt for a cheaper cake recipe
Optional Topping:
Strawberries and icing sugar for dusting

It's almost like they're tricking you into thinking you're buying a yoghurt of some kind, rather than a bottle of booze with added sugar and flavourings. It must be hard enough growing apples and strawberries in Sweden, let alone limes, but we'll skim over that. It tastes exactly like a 'red' flavour freeze pop. It's too overwhelmingly sugary to pair with a lot of foods or other drinks. But pouring it over ice would dampen the sweetness and make it a decent lunchtime aperitif. On a boiling hot day, upgrading from a crafty Mr Freeze to one of these in the garden wouldn't be a bad idea. It's very pink and very sweet and it's among the stronger offerings in today's field at four per cent alcohol by volume. It tastes of strawberry flavour rather than actual strawberries, but is by far the cheapest of the bunch. If it's value you're after, you could easily add a shot of strawberry syrup to your favourite cider, but if it's strawberry flavour convenience that you want, then look no further. Syrupy sweet, so might be nice as a pudding wine alternative. Try it with ice cream or apple pie, or maybe even delivered lovingly to the wife while she's halfway through a long soak in a bubble bath. It might be an alcoholic tipple, but it smells like a bag of Jelly Babies and tastes like an exotic species of Fanta. I have to say I rather liked it. I can see it going down really well at a barbecue as it's full of fizz, with enough zest and fruitiness to square up to the traditional burned sausage. That said, I've also got a feeling you could get something very similar for much cheaper by adding a shot of already-open booze, like vodka, to a glass of your favourite fruity fizzy pop. It looks like a glass of plain old cider but then, when you try it, you get a good biff of raspberry flavour. Any peachiness was harder to detect. As with most of these cheap and cheerful drinks, I think older teens would love it, but whatever your age, it would work best served as cold as possible on a swelteringly hot sunny day. Apple orchards are enchanting places – the Biblical Garden of Eden, which was a paradise, was an orchard, after all. Even relatively recently, cider was used as currency to pay farm workers, so whoever made the best cider got the best workers. And it helped lead to a revolution in British glass manufacturing that ultimately shaped the drinking habits of the entire world. This blood-orange tinned tipple actually tastes nothing like cider at all. Instead, it looks, tastes and smells just like a famous orange fizzy drink. But it would make a decent birthday breakfast substitute for a Buck's fizz. Or swig it as an accompaniment to a weekend fast food smash. RATING: 4/5

David Beckham to guest edit edition of Country Life Magazine
The former England captain and businessman will join the editorial team for the October 22 edition of the magazine with the aim of celebrating what the countryside means to him and his family. He follows in the footsteps of Royal Family members who previously joined the editor-in chief Mark Hedges at the helm, including the King, the Princess Royal and the Queen. Beckham said: 'I am honoured to have been invited to guest edit an edition of a magazine that I have always admired and read. 'I am really looking forward to working with the editorial team to produce an issue that will celebrate what the countryside and the great British landscape means to me and my family.' This comes as Beckham is to be awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours, according to reports by The Sun. The football star regularly documents his life in the countryside by posting pictures and videos on his Instagram including him harvesting vegetables, gardening and his flock of chickens. Mark Hedges, Country Life editor-in-chief, said: 'I know he has a deep love of the countryside, which has grown since he retired as a professional footballer, although he is, of course, still extremely busy as a businessman and an ambassador for a host of causes, such as Unicef and The King's Foundation, as well as being co-owner of Inter Miami CF in the US and Salford City Football Club in the UK. 'As someone who is passionate about the countryside, I'm excited to see what his special commemorative issue will bring.' The one-off edition aims to highlight how the countryside has played an important part in Beckham's life. It will feature his favourite view, his best-loved recipe and spotlight his rural champions, including the craftsmen and woman who helped shape his home in the Cotswolds. Beckham, who played for his country 115 times, is the only Englishman to score at three different World Cups and his career included the treble-winning campaign of 1998-99, when Manchester United won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. He earned the third highest number of England caps of all time for the men's team, and was captain on 59 occasions. The former winger married Spice Girl Victoria, also known as Posh Spice, in 1999.
