City youngsters embrace yoga for health, well being

Ahmedabad: Reva Shah, a resident of South Bopal, took up yoga over the past year.
"I was earlier attending a gym, but I switched to yoga primarily to ensure flexibility and overall well-being.
As an executive, I spend hours at my desk, and it was causing issues with my upper and lower back.
It also motivated me to practice specific asanas," she said.
The theme for
International Day of Yoga
(June 21) this year is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health,' reflecting yoga's role in the interconnectedness of health, sustainability, and the environment.
Hetal Desai, a city-based yoga guru, said that practitioners below 40 years primarily come with three issues — insomnia, back problems, and gut health.
"Scrolling on screens has resulted in a rise in sleeplessness. Outside food is causing indigestion and stomach issues, whereas prolonged sitting and lack of exercise result in back pain. Thus, we try to provide solutions to these issues along with lifestyle modifications," said Desai.
Govind Dodiya, a cop and a yoga teacher, guides youths in proper techniques. "I started off with martial arts and then adopted yoga when I experienced its benefits and the larger aspects of yogic science that go beyond asanas and pranayama," he said.
On Saturday, several events have been organised at school, college, university, and organisation levels to celebrate the day. Along with several educational camps and workshops, different types of yoga, including aerial and sound yoga, are also planned by different organisations.

"In embracing yoga, we can reduce our ecological footprint and contribute to a healthier planet," she said in a statement on Friday. The International Day of Yoga, marked annually on 21 June, celebrates this timeless practice that nurtures body and soul, she said. It was first proposed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Recognizing yoga's universal appeal, he suggested the Summer Solstice - 21 June - as a symbolic date, Wazed said. With 177 UN member states co-sponsoring the resolution, the proposal received overwhelming support, and the day was first celebrated in 2015, starting a global wellness movement, she said. This year's theme, "Yoga for One Earth, One Health," reminds us of the deep connection between our well-being and the health of our planet, she added. "Yoga is more than just physical exercise. It is a journey towards inner peace and harmony, and teaches us to listen to our bodies and to live mindfully. As we practice yoga, we become more aware of our surroundings, and more attunes to the rhythm of nature," Wazed stated. "In a world facing environmental challenges, yoga offers a path to sustainability by encouraging us to live simply, consume mindfully, and respect the natural world. In embracing yoga, we can reduce our ecological footprint and contribute to a healthier planet," she said. Clean air, pure water, and fertile soil are essential for our well-being. Yoga encourages us to protect these vital resources and ensure a thriving planet for future generations, Wazed said. The benefits of yoga are well-documented, she said. Studies have shown that 77 per cent of people report feeling physically stronger after practising yoga regularly. 82 per cent of patients with chronic inflammation experienced a nearly 50 per cent reduction in inflammation after just six weeks of daily yoga. Yoga can also help mental health, she added. A study by Harvard Medical School found that 60 per cent of participants with depression experienced a significant reduction in symptoms after practising yoga twice a week for eight weeks, Wazed said.

New Delhi: Over 11,000 naval personnel and their family members from the Navy's Eastern Naval Command would be participating in the grand Yoga Day celebrations in Visakhapatnam that will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, according to officials. These naval participants would be occupying around 10 enclosures along the scenic R K Beach stretch, forming an integral part of the historic gathering, a spokesperson of the Navy said on Friday. "In a parallel display at sea, yoga would also be practised on board Indian naval ships anchored off Visakhapatnam," he said. The impressive maritime lineup would include frontline Eastern Fleet ships and two Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessels, stationed at Visakhapatnam anchorage off the R K Beach, the official said. The ships, silhouetted against the Visakhapatnam skyline, stand as powerful symbols of the Indian Navy's commitment to the national vision of yoga . This year's theme of International Day of Yoga is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. Elaborate arrangements have been made across the 26-km stretch from RK Beach in Visakhapatnam to Bhogapuram for the Saturday's grand event. Eastern Naval Command is proud to join in 'YogAndhra 2025', a landmark initiative spearheaded by Union Ministry of Ayush and the state government of Andhra Pradesh, celebrating the International Day of Yoga in the coastal city. Demonstrating commitment to holistic well-being, "over 11,000 naval personnel and their family members from Eastern Naval Command would be participating in the grand morning yoga session", he said.

Vijayawada: Urging people to make yoga a part of their daily lives to stay healthy, health minister Satya Kumar Yadav said it should be viewed as something to be parctised only for International Day of Yoga or other competitions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Chandrababu Naidu have maintained their fitness because they have made yoga a part of their daily lives, he said. Patanjali's 'yoga sutras' mean yoga is about controlling the mind and its fluctuations, he noted. "The essence of yoga lies in the mind, while the body serves as the foundation for practising righteousness. Yoga is the tool to control the body and mind, enhancing health, longevity, and inner bliss," he explained. He noted that the United Nations general assembly declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga due to Prime Minister Modi's initiation. "The 11th edition of the event is being celebrated with the theme, 'One Earth, One Health'. Yoga is a continuous way of life, encompassing not just physical postures but also mental practices like meditation. India's commitment is to global health, and Andhra Pradesh is fortunate to be the platform for this," the minister said, adding that the govt is working to take the yoga program to every home by conducting surveys and understanding the benefits and success stories of yoga.
