Nasha Mukti Kendra in Mohali's Sector 66 upgraded to 100 beds
Punjab health and family welfare minister Dr Balbir Singh on Thursday inaugurated the upgraded Nasha Mukti Kendra at Sector 66, enhancing its bed capacity to 100 and introducing skill training courses with support from the Sun Foundation.
Plans are in place to expand the facility further to accommodate 200 patients by constructing an additional floor, the minister said.
Dr Singh stated that the state had increased de-addiction centres' capacity from 1,500 to 5,000 beds across Punjab and was integrating vocational training programmes to support patient reintegration into society.
The health minister also announced that the Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) centres, now renamed Nasha Mukti Dawai Kendras, have risen to 565 statewide. These centres now operate with digitised medicine disbursement systems for greater transparency and efficiency.
Private medical and nursing colleges across Punjab have been asked to join the anti-drug campaign 'Yudh Nasheya Virudh'. The institutions have offered 1,200 seats to the government for treatment of drug addicts.
Currently, around 2,500 patients are receiving treatment across the state's de-addiction centres.
Dr Singh said drives launched under 'Yudh Nasheya Virudh' campaign have led to large-scale contraband seizures and demolitions of properties of drug suppliers has disrupted the supply chain.
Rajya Sabha MP and Sun Foundation patron Vikramjit Singh Sahney and SAS Nagar MLA Kulwant Singh, who thanked the minister for selecting the Mohali centre for this revamp, were also present at the event.
Dr Singh said that the Punjab government is committed to strengthening the treatment and rehabilitation infrastructure for drug-addicted youth.

A week after a 9-year-old girl was allegedly dragged away and killed by a leopard, and three days after a 40-year-old woman was injured in another such attack, a village in Gujarat continues to be on edge with forest department teams of two other districts deployed in the area to locate the big cat. Though she was rescued by villagers who had arrived at the scene on hearing her screams, she suffered injuries on her hands and legs besides losing a part of her right ear. Following protests in Kolvan village, forest officials handed over a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased minor. Range Forest Officer (RFO) Sagbara Abhay Singh told The Indian Express, 'We have installed 10 trap cages and trap cameras, and also taken help of drone cameras. A special tranquilisation team from Banaskantha, which has helped rescue leopards that stray into revenue areas, has been roped in. We also have one specialist team from the zoo from Kevadia that is helping us understand the behaviour of the wild leopards…' Singh said the forest officials are first addressing the question if the two attacks have been carried out by the same leopard. Singh said, 'The first question is whether the two leopards are same or different. We are trying to ascertain the same by examining pug marks from 550 periphery areas and zeroing down on the routes that the leopard might have taken… We are hopeful that in the next couple of days, we will be able to rescue it.' Singh said since the girl and the woman were attacked within a space of two kilometers, it was likely that the leopard in both the cases is the same. 'The woman, who is the second victim, is also of a small build like the 9-year-old. In leopard attacks, the size of the victim is also of consequence. There is a big possibility that it could be the same leopard but we are trying to confirm this through examination and probe. We have been regularly shifting the cages to increase the chance of the leopard being trapped,' Singh added. Even though the forest department is confident of catching the leopard in a few days, the villagers don't share the optimism. Anil Valvi, the brother of Bebi, said, 'It has been over a month since the leopard attacks have increased in the area and a single person venturing out close to sunset is risky now … We all are scared. The forest department is setting up cages but leopards do not walk into traps these days. They must tranquilise and catch the leopard…' Bharuch MP Mansukh Vasava, who visited Bebi on Tuesday, said a 'taskforce' should be formed to deal with the human-leopard conflict in the region. 'I will appeal to the government to form a special taskforce to tackle the problem of the leopard-human conflict. Sharing the outcome of the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' drive, the DGP said the police have registered 9,087 FIRs and arrested 15,495 drug smugglers since March 1. Additionally, treatment for 5,786 addicts in de-addiction centres has been facilitated by the police and 6,483 others have been motivated to avail the services at Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment clinics. Yadav also highlighted the humane aspect of their strategy, noting that 1,121 drug users, caught with small quantities, have been sent for rehabilitation under the provision of Section 64-A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act instead of being treated as criminals. The DGP chaired a state-level meeting to review the performance of the districts in the ongoing anti-drug drive, law and order situation and internal security situation at the PAP Complex in Jalandhar. Additionally, illegally acquired properties of 144 drug smugglers worth 74.27 crores have been frozen, DGP Yadav added. He said the Punjab Police is also exploring the use of GPS anklets to track and monitor activities of big drug smugglers released on bail, 'We are examining this proposal from a legal point of view to track the movement and monitor activities of bailed-out big smugglers through GPS anklets with the approval of a competent court,' the officer said. The Punjab Police has also been developing an AI-powered hierarchical database to map arrested persons under the NDPS Act with backwards and forward linkages to be traced upto two levels in each arrest, DGP Yadav said.
