North Fort Myers man faces vehicular homicide charges in crash that left one dead
A North Fort Myers man faces vehicle homicide charges after authorities say he raced another vehicle, weaving through traffic, which led to the other driver's death.
Dillon Glenn Sandy, 21, faces one count of vehicular homicide. Sandy's court case file, which would include the arrest affidavit with the victim's identity, was not available by publication.
Around 1:45 p.m. April 18, Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to a fatal traffic crash on northbound Interstate 75, on the Daniels Parkway Overpass, at mile marker 131.

A Hyundai Sonata driven by Sandy and a Nissan Maxima, driven by the victim, a 24-year-old Lehigh Acres man, were traveling north on I-75, at high speed, approaching slower traffic, when Sandy's car entered the right lane to pass the slower traffic, while the victim's car entered the left lane to pass the slower traffic.
Troopers said both vehicles then attempted to change back onto the center lane.
In doing so, troopers said, the left side of Sandy's car collided with the right side of the victim's car. After the collision, both cars collided with the concrete barrier wall.
The victim's car overturned, ejecting the driver. Sandy then collided with the ejected driver, who died on scene.
Sandy and a 23-year-old North Fort Myers man traveling with him suffered injuries and were taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center, in Fort Myers.
Troopers said that on June 5, after an exhaustive criminal investigation, they arrested Sandy.
Sandy remained in custody by publication on $50,000 bond. His arraignment is July 7.

SE Marion: E-bike rider hit/killed by car. Vehicle driver charged with DUI manslaughter
A man riding an electric bike was hit by a vehicle killed just before 2 a.m. June 7 in southeast Marion County. The vehicle driver was arrested by Florida Highway Patrol troopers on one count of DUI manslaughter and four counts of DUI with property damage. The defendant, Janice Schwarz, 34, of Belleview, was transported to a local hospital for treatment after the crash. She was taken to the Marion County Jail after she was medically cleared. She is being held without bail. The crash happened on a dark stretch of County Road 25 just west of Southeast 80th Court. CR 25, a two-lane road, was blocked more than four hours as troopers worked to clear the scene and investigate the crash. Crews from Duke Energy were called to repair a wooden utility pole that was damaged in the crash. FHP officials said Schwarz was behind the wheel of a rented 2025 Chevy Malibu, traveling west on CR 25. The victim, riding an e-bike on the shoulder, also was westbound on the same roadway. The car struck the motorized bicycle from behind, ejecting the rider. Schwarz lost control of her vehicle, which veered off the roadway, hit the utility pole, and then hit a concrete post. Overturning at least once, the car came to rest on its side. Traffic was blocked in both directions and the road was eventually re-opened about 6:25 a.m. Arriving on scene, troopers spoke with Schwarz, who exhibited signs of being under the influence, FHP officials said. Officials said her eyes were glassy, her speech was slurred, and her breath smelled of alcohol. Schwarz completed a field sobriety exercise and failed the series of tests, authorities said. Investigators got a subpoena to take a sample of Schwarz's blood. She declined to undergo a breath test, FHP said. The blood sample will be sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement laboratory for analysis to determine Schwarz's blood-alcohol content. After troopers were finished at the scene, utility workers repaired the pole. Utility officials said service would be interrupted for approximately 20 homes in the area. Locally, Schwarz does not have a criminal history. According to the FHP, Schwarz told troopers she had been headed home from a local bar, where she had consumed one beer. Troopers are trying to identify the victim. They said he was age 37 and from Ocala. Florida attorney general loses appeal to overturn order blocking immigration law
A judicial appeals panel has upheld a temporary injunction blocking the enforcement of a new state law criminalizing undocumented immigrants when they arrive in Florida — notching another victory for immigration advocates in a case that has drawn Florida's attorney general into conflict with a Miami federal judge. The Friday afternoon ruling by a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Atlanta keeps in place a lower court order temporarily preventing police and prosecutors from making arrests and pursuing charges under Florida's SB-4, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in February. The law makes it a crime for immigrants to enter the state of Florida if they have been deported or denied entry into the country, or eluded immigration officers when coming into the United States. 'This is a difficult case, and this order does not finally resolve the issues,' states the order, issued by judges Jill Pryor, Kevin Newsom and Embry Kidd. The unsuccessful appeal at the heart of Friday's ruling was brought by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who sought to stay the temporary injunction. Uthmeier has argued that District Court Judge Kathleen Williams overstepped in April when, responding to a lawsuit brought by several undocumented Florida residents who said the law was unconstitutional, she blocked the enforcement of the law. Williams initially issued a restraining order preventing the enforcement of SB-4, and then ordered a broader temporary injunction after learning that state police had continued to make arrests — including an American citizen. Uthmeier's attorneys argued that while Williams' order had bound them from enforcing the law, it didn't apply to 'independent' law enforcement agencies like the Florida Highway Patrol. The attorney general was so adamant in his position that, days later, he wrote a letter to law enforcement agencies telling them he didn't think Williams' order was legitimate — leading the judge to initiate contempt proceedings. In their Friday ruling, the judges waded into the legal skirmish, writing that Uthmeier 'may well be right that the district court's order is impermissibly broad. But that does not warrant what seems to have been at least a veiled threat not to obey it.' A spokesman for Uthmeier's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The American Civil Liberties Union, whose attorneys have worked on the case, celebrated the ruling as a significant victory, not just in Florida but around the country as red states move to implement strict immigration laws. 'This ruling is not just a legal victory — it's a resounding rejection of cruelty masquerading as policy,' said Bacardi Jackson, executive director of the ACLU of Florida. The case, brought by the Florida Immigrant Coalition, the Farmworker Association of Florida, will continue on before Judge Williams, who has yet to issue her ruling on whether Uthmeier will be held in contempt of court.
