James Cameron to co-write 'The Devil' movie adaptation

Hindustan Times4 days ago

Los Angeles, Filmmaker James Cameron, whose credits include "Titanic", "The Terminator", and the "Avatar" franchise, is set to write a script for the movie adaptation of the best-selling novel "The Devils" by Joe Abercrombie.
He shared the news of acquiring the rights to the novel on his Facebook account on Monday. The director said he has admired Abercrombie's writings for years. Both will write the script for the upcoming project.
Cameron will begin work on the project once he is done with his upcoming film "Avatar: Fire and Ash", which is the third installment in the "Avatar" franchise.
"I've loved Joe's writing for years, cherishing each new read, throughout the epic cycle of the 'First Law' books, especially 'Best Served Cold' and the 'Age of Madness' trilogy. But the freshness of the world and the characters in 'The Devils' finally got me to buy one of his books and partner with him to bring it to the screen," Cameron said.
"I'm looking forward to the writing process with him, though I'm certain this adaptation will practically write itself because Joe writes very visually, almost in scenes, and with a very cinematic structure. I can't wait to dig into this as I wind down on 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'. It will be a joyful new challenge for me to bring these indelible characters to life."
The book revolves around an alternate medieval Europe threatened by an imminent elvish invasion, who are hungry for human flesh.
Abercrombie said he couldn't think of anyone better than Cameron to bring the story to the screen.
"James Cameron has been thrilling audiences, including me, by putting the impossible on film for over four decades. No one can balance mind-blowing action and spectacle with gut-wrenching personal stakes and story the way he does. I can't think of anyone better to bring this weird and wonderful monster of a book to the screen," he said.
Cameron's "Avatar: Fire and Ash" is slated to release in theatres on December 19.

2025 box office report card: How a kids' film beat Mission Impossible, Sinners, Marvel; is year's highest-grossing film

Nearly half of 2025 has come to a close. The summer blockbuster season is set to begin, but already, in the first five months of the year, 2025 has given a lot of reasons to cheer at the box office worldwide. Hollywood films found their footing again, even as Marvel continued to falter. Tom Cruise reasserted his superstardom, while Sinners and Final Destination: Bloodlines raised the flag for horror. But despite all this, the highest-grossing film of the year so far has not come from Hollywood. It has no big stars, and is made for kids. Yet, it has managed to beat studio heavyweights on its own. (Also read: Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible 8 defies US-China tensions, tops China box office with $25 million haul) Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 has been the biggest box office sensation of the year so far. The film, made for just ¥600 million (around $80 million), it has already earned $2.2 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film ever, and one of the highest-grossing films of all time, with only heavyweights like Avatar and Avengers: Endgame above it. Ne Zha 2 pipped Warner Bros' A Minecraft Movie to the top. The second-place feature has earned $948 million worldwide. Disney's Lilo & Stitch is in the third spot with a global haul of $632 million and counting. Another Chinese film - Detective Chinatown 1900 - is in the fourth spot, while Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World rounds up the top 5. Ne Zha 2's success can be gauged by the fact that it has earned nearly six times as much as Tom Cruise's hit Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning or Marvel's Thunderbolts. The Paramount film has earned $389 million, while the MCU's antihero team-up is at $371 million. Despite wide releases globally, they have been unable to match Ne Zha 2's pace. What has made Ne Zha 2 so popular is its universal appeal in China. The film is based on Chinese mythology and legends, and has been seen as a fun, educational family watch in the country. This, coupled with China's impressive 90,000 screens, has meant that the film was able to sustain record footfalls for long durations, selling out theatres for weeks in parts of the country. Ne Zha 2 may be hard to dethrone. Only four films have ever earned more - Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic. Yet, 2025 boasts a strong line-up of films that can break the $2 billion mark. First up is James Gunn's Superman reboot, followed by Marvel's new Fantastic Four film. But perhaps the film that has the best chance of surpassing Ne Zha 2 at the box office is James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash, which releases in December.

Patrick Schwarzenegger wanted to change name to avoid nepotism jibes, Arnold is glad he kept it: 'Now I can take credit'

After years of being known as Arnold Schwarzenegger's son, 2025 was the year when actor Patrick Schwarzenegger finally found his breakthrough. The success of The White Lotus season 3 ensured that Schwarzenegger was a name unto himself. But this fame and recognition have come after years of work. At one point, the actor even considered changing his name as he felt it was an obstacle in his path. (Also read: Arnold Schwarzenegger 'couldn't believe' son Patrick's nude scene in The White Lotus: All of a sudden, I see the weenie) Patrick and Arnold sat down for Variety's Actors on Actors 2025 edition to discuss their careers, acting, and more. When Arnold asked Patrick if he felt his famous last name ever felt like an obstacle, the younger actor replied, "I feel it in multiple different ways. Mike White (creator of The White Lotus) said that it comes with baggage, the idea that when you have successful parents like I do with you and Mom, there's an added level of what other people think. Mike was worried about, if he cast me, what other people would think. Which they did — they did care about that; people said I got the role because of you and Mom. There were times earlier in my career where I was wondering, does it make sense to go under an alias? It took a while for me to get to a point where I was less worried about living in your shadow versus wanting to do it the way I thought I should do it." Arnold Schwarzenegger began his career as a bodybuilder in Europe before finding fame as a multiple Mr Olympia winner in the US in 1970s. He took this fame to the movies and became an action star with Conan, before finding his big break with The Terminator in 1984. In the 80s and 90s, Arnold was arguably the biggest movie star in the world, alongside Tom Cruise and Sylvester Stallone. Needless to say, Patrick faced a lot of comparisons with his father when he first began. Reacting to Patrick's thought about changing his name, Arnold reacted, "I'm glad you kept the name, because now I can take credit. You joined a very short list of people: You know, Jamie Lee Curtis — I think she's one of the greatest actors in history. If you show you have the substance, you can get rid of the whole idea of nepotism." The son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, Patrick began his career with minor roles in the 2000s. As a teenager, he had supporting roles in Stuck in Love, Grown Ups 2 and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. After his first lead role in the 2018 film Midnight Sun, he found fame with a recurring role in Gen V, before The White Lotus became his breakthrough.
