ChatGPT AI bot adds shopping to its powers

BBC News28-04-2025

Overwhelmed by online shopping? Maybe a robot can help. The viral ChatGPT bot is adding shopping features to its powers, extending the reach of its artificial intelligence (AI) into an area traditionally dominated by media sites and tech rivals such as Amazon and Google. It said the update would allow users to see prices and reviews more easily, as well as find direct links to purchase personalised product recommendations.Parent company OpenAI said its selections would be "chosen independently and are not ads".
The company, which sparked the frenzy over AI in 2022 with its technological advances, debuted its search tool last year. It said it was among its most popular and fastest growing features, with over one billion web searches in the last week.Google is still by far the dominant player in search, capturing roughly 89% of global traffic, according to analyst estimates. But its share of the market has been slowly slipping in recent months. Adding shopping to its search puts OpenAI into even more direct competition with Google, as well other websites that offer product reviews, such as the New York Times and other publishers. Amazon unveiled its own generative AI shopping assistant last year, while rival AI firm Perplexity also has a shopping tool.OpenAI said the goal of its update was to make it "faster to find, compare, and buy products". It said the feature would be available to all users but it would take a few days for the rollout to be complete. The change was one of several announced on Monday as part of a wider update to its search product. OpenAI also unveiled a feature that would allow users to text chatGPT for live sports scores and would provide multiple citations in its answers.

Dunelm shoppers love 'stylish' plug-in wall light that doesn't need an electrician

The fixture is ideal for those who don't want to pay out for an electrician to install a wall light - and shoppers are impressed Dunelm customers are raving about a chic wall lamp that's reportedly a breeze to install. The Churchgate Harby Plug In Wall Light is winning over many shoppers with its simple installation process, thanks to its plug-in cord that eliminates the need for complex wiring by an electrician. Usually retailing at £40 per light, the store currently has a sale on, reducing the price to just £32. The lights boast an appealing white ceramic glazed head and are finished in antique gold metal. For those concerned about unsightly wires, the lamp comes with a stylish white twisted cable that looks far more attractive than your average wire. But Dunelm isn't the only retailer offering this type of plug-in light. Lighting Direct's Twiga Wall Light, available in black for those who favour a darker interior style, is slightly cheaper at £30.99. It also comes with a three-year guarantee for added reassurance. Meanwhile, those who detest visible wires might have better luck with retail behemoth Amazon, which sells battery-operated wall lights, reports the Mirror. The Rechargeable Wireless Wall Sconce Set of 2 costs £49.99 and while they do require recharging, Amazon claims the battery will typically last for 40 hours on low brightness and 18 hours on maximum. Conveniently, this set includes two E27 rechargeable bulbs as well, saving you additional expense. One Dunelm light buyer enthused: "Amazing quality and really adds a premium feel to the bedside. Added these to a room refresh for a beachy look and feel and the quality is great. We've had lovely comments already and love the look." Homewares deal of the week It's time to give the home a spring refresh and Dunelm has launched its massive sale. Sometimes it's all about buying necessities for the home, and these Fifi Dining Chairs that have shoppers bagging multiple are now on offer for £31.50, down from £45, saving 30 percent off the RRP. Crafted with a solid wooden frame, these chairs can easily be paired with many different dining tables and decorated with comfy cushion. Designed with a modern curved backrest with a scallop feature, this chair would be a cute edition to any home. Currently available in apricot, blue and natural, there are chairs available for people who want to add a pop of colour to their home, as well as those who want to continue a minimalistic design. This durable seat is said to offer both style and comfort to its users, and is the ideal choice for family meals or entertaining guests. With dimensions of H 80cm x W 44cm x D 52cm, this chair will comfortably fit under a table without taking up too much space. Back to the Fifi Dining Chair, Dunelm shoppers have awarded the product a 4.5 star rating, with the vast majority of shoppers praising the chairs for their colour and how easy they are to assemble. One delighted shopper wrote: "I really love this chair! They are super comfy and they look great! They were very easy to assemble." With another shopper agreeing: "Lovely comfortable chairs! Waiting for them to come back into stock to order two more!" Buy the Fifi Dining Chairs in the Dunelm sale here. Another chimed in with praise, stating: "Looks lovely, good quality and easy to install. Would recommend." A third was equally impressed, saying: "These look lovely in the picture but they are even more beautiful in real life! Easy to install." Nonetheless, despite the rave reviews and a high 4.7-star average from 148 reviews, a few buyers noted minor issues. One buyer remarked: "Really nice lamps but was disappointed when it came with silver coloured screws, especially as they are on the wall plate and are seen. Otherwise I like the lamps. I think they are more of a cream than a white." It's not just lighting fixtures that Dunelm has reduced in its sale, as there is plenty on offer for anyone wanting to give their home a fresh look without breaking the bank. One way of doing this without a major investment is by getting some fresh bedding and the retailer has certainly got that area covered. For instance, Dunelm shoppers are loving this floral bedding that features vibrant patterns with bold colours. For something brighter, this "cheerful" gingham pattern may not be on sale, but shoppers are still snapping it up in multiple colours. Art lovers may want to consider this interesting wall art available for £36.
