One of two people who died on the Mexican navy tall ship Cuauhtémoc, which crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on Saturday night, has been identified as a female Mexican Navy cadet from Veracruz, according to the state's governor.
Veracruz Gov. Rocío Nahle García identified the cadet as América Yamilet Sánchez of Xalapa in an X post Sunday.
"I deeply regret the passing of Veracruz cadet América Yamilet Sánchez," the governor wrote in a translated post. "My love, support, and solidarity go out to her family. My gratitude to the @SEMAR_mx and my wishes for a speedy recovery for those injured. Veracruz is with you."
Sánchez died when the ship, described as an academy training vessel, ran into the Brooklyn Bridge at about 8:20 p.m.
The scene was captured on video by multiple eyewitnesses, showing the ship – which was flying a large Mexican flag – traveling swiftly in reverse toward the bridge near the Brooklyn side of the East River.
As the bystanders continued to watch, the ship's three masts struck the bridge's span and snapped, one-by-one, as the tall ship continued to push into the bridge.
Videos captured heavy traffic on the span at the time of the collision, though nobody on the bridge was reported injured.
Sailors could be seen aloft in the rigging of the damaged masts, though remarkably, officials noted, nobody fell into the water.
The Cuauhtémoc – about 297 feet long and 40 feet wide, according to the Mexican navy – sailed for the first time in 1982. The vessel's main mast has a height of 160 feet, according to the Mexican government. Each year, the Cuauhtémoc sets out at the end of classes at the naval military school to finish cadets' training. This year, it left the Mexican port of Acapulco on the Pacific coast on April 6, according to the Mexican navy.
It arrived in New York City on May 13, when visitors were welcome for several days, the Mexican consulate said. The ship was scheduled to visit 22 ports in 15 nations over 254 days, 170 of them at sea.
It is unclear what caused the ship to veer off course, and investigations are being conducted by several agencies, including the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB).
The Brooklyn Bridge, which opened in 1883, has a nearly 1,600-foot main span supported by two masonry towers. More than 100,000 vehicles and an estimated 32,000 pedestrians cross every day, according to the city's transportation department. Its walkway is a major tourist attraction.
Traffic was halted after the collision but was allowed to resume after an inspection, city officials said.
As midnight approached, the broken ship was moved slowly up the East River, going under and past the Manhattan Bridge, aided by a series of tugboats, before docking at a pier.

As a young chef in the 1950s, I had a bit of a complex about not having an education. I had left school at the age of 13 and learned my trade in the kitchen. I was traveling to New York City in 1959, looking to expand my horizons, when someone on my boat mentioned Columbia University as the best school in the city. A week after I arrived, I took the subway uptown to Columbia's campus. I would go on to study at Columbia from the fall of 1959 to the spring of 1972. During my time there, I proposed a doctoral dissertation on the history of French cooking in the context of history and literature. I was amazed by how many of the great French works contained references to food, eating and the art of the table. The wedding feast in Gustave Flaubert's 'Madame Bovary' is meticulously depicted, and in Colette's 'Chéri,' breakfast becomes an important ritual with sexual overtones. My proposal was turned down. The subject was too menial, too simple — not worth the intellectual pursuit. I dropped out. For many years, the work of cooking was indeed considered too menial. A chef was a physical laborer in a basement kitchen dealing with food, fat and dirty dishes, doing nothing more than creating sustenance. But there is nothing more worthy of intellectual pursuit and respect than food. Not only is it a part of history, it also actively shapes and reflects it. Indeed, my whole life, my history, was molded by it. I was born in 1935, on the eve of World War II. Life was simpler then. The Michelin Guide, whose prestigious designations are now sought by chefs around the world, had only begun awarding stars to restaurants in 1926 and was exclusively the domain of the French. The program has been an unbroken tradition in the community, recognizing Douglass as a prominent figure in local history. The China Institute Gallery in New York is showing one of the world's greatest collections of ancient Chinese bronzes outside of China from a crucial period in the history of human civilization, 12th century BCE to 1st to 2nd century CE. The China Institute Gallery in New York is displaying ancient ritual bronzes owned by the Minneapolis Institute of Art through July 13 Loaned by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Bronze Age vessels for food and wine and imaginative animal sculptures are on view for the first time in New York through July 13. According to the China Institute Gallery, 'The emergence of the culture of bronze—an alloy of copper, tin and lead—remains a crucial chapter in the history of human civilization. Although China was not the first country to enter the Bronze Age, its bronzes from this period are unique in world history because of their variety and intricacy, the ritual context in which they developed, and the sheer number that have been unearthed over China's vast territory. The people of Bronze Age China believed in the hierarchy of beings, from the heavens to the king to the royal courts to the people. They created their art to maintain this order on earth and in the afterlife.' The gallery explained that 'in ancient China, ancestor worship, a practice based on the belief in life after death and the connection between the deceased and the living, played a significant role in daily life. Communal good depended on showing respect to ancestral spirits. This practice led to the establishment of ancestral temples to accommodate such rituals. Bronze vessels were made and then used to offer food and wine to the dead in elaborate ceremonial banquets. Their mystical surface decorations, particularly animal images, served as a means to communicate with spirits and deities. Ritual bronze vessels also gave the living an opportunity to acknowledge their debt to their ancestors, as well as the deeds and virtues of the deceased. In this way, ritual bronze vessels enhanced the sacredness and power of a temple.' It added that 'ritual bronzes were also used as funereal objects, buried in the tombs of nobles to provide the deceased with the same material environment they enjoyed in life, thus assuring immortality.' Large sets of bronze bells were also important elements in the ritual ceremonies that allowed the living to connect with the dead. The gallery said this 'is evidenced by the inscriptions on many musical instruments excavated in the past several decades from sites dating to the Western Zhou dynasty (1046–771 BCE). An inscription on a bronze bell dating to the early 900s BCE reads, 'I made this set of harmonically tuned chime bells. Use it so as to please and exalt those who arrive in splendor and to let the accomplished men of former generations rejoice.'' In addition, the gallery said 'there were profound political implications in linking ancestral rites and music. During the Western Zhou dynasty, the Zhou maintained a strict hierarchy based on a patriarchal clan system. An individual's duties, power and term of service were defined by his social status. Without musical harmony, society itself would become discordant. Therefore, music was emphasized as a means to help the populace follow the moral and social order and to regulate their conduct.' During the Eastern Zhou dynasty (771–256 BCE), the gallery also said there were 'important changes in the function, shape, decoration and style of bronzes. Due to advances in casting technology, changes in social conditions, and evolutions in regional taste, new fashions in ritual bronze casting arose. During the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, bronze vessels were primarily used for sacrifices to ancestors. During the Eastern Zhou, however, bronze vessels diverged from the realm of religious ritual and began to be seen as luxury items in their own right, used by their owners to show off their wealth and power. Bronzes became more ornate in appearance, with extensive use of three-dimensional pendants.' The gallery called the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) 'the epilogue of the Chinese Bronze Age. During this period, the concept of immortality—the physical departure from human society and the achievement of eternal life—became a national preoccupation. This idea, influenced by Daoist teachings on eternity, had a tremendous impact on daily life and extended to representations in works of art, including bronzes.' The image of a goddess known as Queen Mother of the West. the most popular deity during this period, decorates bronze mirrors, while bronze horses like the one in the exhibition were placed in elaborately furnished aristocratic tombs to provide transportation for the deceased in the afterlife.
