Messi leads Inter Miami vs. Crew in MLS clash of unbeatens, 67,000 fans expected
A crowd of 60,000-plus awaits Lionel Messi and his teammates for the second weekend in a row as Inter Miami takes on the Columbus Crew at Cleveland's Huntington Bank Field in a Saturday afternoon battle of the only unbeaten teams in Major League Soccer.
The game was moved from the Crew's cozy 20,000-seat Lower.com Field, which reportedly did not sit well with a segment of the team's fans, who feel this will not be a true home game and view the move as a purely financial decision by Crew majority owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam.
The Haslems also own the Cleveland Browns and will benefit significantly with an expected crowd of 67,000, many of whom will likely be there to see Messi, as is always the case when the Argentine icon takes his show on the road. Instead of a sea of yellow and black, there surely will be large swaths of fans in pink No. 10 jerseys and Argentina national team shirts.
'Hopefully, the fans are more in our favor because this is supposed to be a home game,' said Crew forward Jacen Russell-Rowe. 'I don't think as players it affects us greatly; it just would be nice to have more fans in our favor going out there. But it's going to be enjoyable having a big crowd and a big atmosphere.'
Inter Miami enters the highly anticipated match with four wins, three ties and no losses for 15 points. The Crew leads the Eastern Conference with 18 points on five wins and three ties. Both teams fell short of expectations in the playoffs last season, but won hardware, as Columbus won the Leagues Cup and Miami the Supporters Shield.
Columbus does not match Miami for star power, but its coach, Wilfried Nancy, is one of the most respected in the league and always has his teams ready.
It is the fourth time in MLS history that unbeatens have played against each other after at least five games in the season and the first time since 2017 (Sporting Kansas City vs. FC Dallas).
The last time the teams met, in Columbus in October 2024, Messi scored two goals to lead Miami to a 3-2 victory that secured the Supporters Shield.
'Columbus is one of the best teams in the league, with a very clear identity, which was instilled by their coach, a coach who has won the MLS title and other important titles,' said Inter Miami's first-year coach Javier Mascherano. 'For us, this is a challenge, and for me as a coach, facing a coach who will try to make things difficult. We accept that challenge, knowing this will be a difficult match.'
The Crew recently acquired Daniel Gazdag from the Philadelphia Union to replace 2024 MLS MVP-runner up Cucho Hernandez, the Colombian star who left for Spanish La Liga club Real Betis. Gazdag scored 59 league goals and 72 overall during his five years with the Union.
Gazdag scored the lone Philadelphia goal in a 2-1 loss to Inter Miami on March 29. Messi and Robert Taylor scored for Miami in that game.
'I haven't beaten them in a long time, but I just scored a goal against them four weeks ago,' Gazdag said, smiling, during a Thursday news conference. 'They have a very good team, very good individuals, obviously. They sometimes show the game down on purpose and then try to get the ball to Messi and he just does his thing and they score so many goals.
'We would like to close him out, if that's possible. But we have to play our own game, which the guys proved in the past works. I would like to do that and score against them and keep three points at home.'
Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari, who preserved a scoreless tie against the Chicago Fire last week with a great save in the dying minutes, feels his team is up for the challenge the Crew will present.
'It's going to be an important game because we face one of the best teams in the league, so we have to be careful because we know they have a great coach and roster,' Ustari said. 'But we are confident we have the quality to keep doing what we've been doing.'
Mascherano agreed.
'These are the only two unbeaten teams MLS, both have done relatively well to be in this position, this is an opponent who will test us and make things difficult for us,' Mascherano said. 'But we're ready and it's a good barometer to see where we stand. It's always interesting to face a really good team to see where you stand.'
Miami midfielder David Ruiz, who was recovering from a hamstring injury, had a minor setback two weeks ago, so the team is taking it slow with him, Mascherano said.

Lee Corso's final 'College GameDay' show will be Aug. 30 at Ohio State
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Lee Corso's final headgear pick on 'College GameDay' will be on the campus where it all started. ESPN's iconic show will begin its 39th season at Ohio State before the defending national champion Buckeyes host the Texas Longhorns on Aug. 30. Corso, who turns 90 in August, announced earlier this year that his final show would be on the opening week of the season. Corso began his popular headgear segment on Oct. 5, 1996, before Ohio State faced Penn State. Since then, he has gone 286-144 in 430 selections wearing everything from helmets and mascot heads to dressing up as the Fighting Irish leprechaun from Notre Dame, the Stanford tree and historic figures James Madison and Benjamin Franklin. He has worn 69 different school's mascot headgear. Corso — the lone remaining member of GameDay's original cast — has selected and worn Brutus Buckeye's headgear a record 45 times. Alabama is next with 38. This will be the 26th appearance by 'College GameDay' in Columbus. The Buckeyes have a 19-6 record in those games. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and

NBA trade rumors: The latest on the Knicks coaching search, Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo
Sure, the NBA Finals are in full swing, but fans of the 28 other NBA teams have one thing on their minds: the offseason. Known for big trades and drama, the NBA offseason has found ways to dominate the sports news cycle in times when basketball should be the last thing on anyone's mind. This offseason promises to be similar. Future Hall of Famers like Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo are expected to be available on the trade market, and one of the league's premier franchises — the New York Knicks — are searching for a new coach. Advertisement Where do all those stories stand with the Finals underway? Yahoo Sports has you covered with all the biggest NBA rumors below. Knicks, Jason Kidd still in limbo The Knicks may have narrowed down their coaching search to their top candidate, but there's a problem: He's already taken. The Knicks are reportedly interested in Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd, but New York has yet to ask the Mavericks for permission to talk to the coach. The Knicks like the idea for a few reasons, per Marc Stein. The franchise is familiar with Kidd after he spent the final year of his playing career with the Knicks. The team also believes Kidd could handle the media pressure and spotlight that comes with being in New York. Kidd also has familiarity with Knicks star Jalen Brunson. Advertisement But in order to hire Kidd, the team needs to formally ask the Mavericks to speak with the coach. It's unclear whether the Knicks will do that. Some in the Mavericks' organization believe the Knicks will not ask the team for permission to speak to Kidd, per Stein. It's possible that's because the Knicks believe they will get shut down by the Mavericks, forcing them to look elsewhere for a new head coach. The team finds itself in a strange spot after the surprising firing of Tom Thibodeau last week. Thibodeau posted a .565 winning percentage in five seasons with the Knicks and just took the team to the Eastern Conference finals. Given the strong personalities in the Knicks' front office, the team could have multiple ideas on how to replace Thibodeau, per Stein, so losing out on Kidd might not be a huge barrier for the franchise. Kevin Durant to the Knicks? The Knicks could have an easy time bringing in a new coach, especially if the club acquires Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. The Suns are expected to deal Durant after the team struggled despite bringing in elite talent last offseason. Advertisement While a number of teams — including the Houston Rockets, Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs — have been mentioned as suitors for Durant, the Knicks continue to be one of the teams consistently mentioned in rumors for the superstar. ESPN's Shams Charania mentioned New York as a suitor for Durant in April, and his colleague, ESPN's Brian Windhorst, brought up that possibility Tuesday. The Suns may have struggled last season, but it wasn't due to Durant. The 36-year-old showed little sign of decline, averaging 26.6 points and six rebounds over 62 games in Phoenix. That should make Durant a popular trade target for a number of teams. It certainly sounds like the Knicks want to remain in that mix. Giannis Antetokounmpo could stay put in Milwaukee. (Photo by) (Justin Casterline via Getty Images) Giannis Antetokounmpo won't be traded? There is apparently no trade market for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo right now, per Windhorst. Advertisement Antetokounmpo has not asked the team for a trade, and the Bucks reportedly aren't looking to deal their star. Given how quickly the NBA offseason shifts, that could change. The Bucks have plenty of incentive to deal their superstar now. Milwaukee was once again eliminated early in the playoffs, and the Bucks are in rough shape following Damian Lillard's injury and the team's lack of control over its future first-round picks. Antetokounmpo should bring in quite the haul if he gets dealt. The 30-year-old averaged 30.4 points and 11.9 rebounds for Milwaukee last season, and is under contract through the 2027-28 NBA season. Expect a lot of NBA offseason action soon While rumors are quiet at the moment, things could pick up relatively soon. Windhorst teased the NBA offseason could move faster than normal during an appearance on "First Take" on Tuesday. Advertisement Windhorst mentioned Charania has "cleared his calendar" ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft, which will take place June 25. Windhorst teased, "You're gonna get your action very soon." That action should come once the NBA Finals conclude. If the series goes a full seven games, that would happen June 22, just days before the NBA Draft. It could make for a hectic draft season.

Lee Corso's final ‘College GameDay' to come at Ohio State in Week 1
Lee Corso's final mascot headgear pick for 'College GameDay' will come at Ohio State, where it all began. ESPN's flagship college football show will go to Columbus, Ohio, in Week 1, where the Buckeyes will face Texas in what is expected to be a top-five matchup. ESPN said in April that the 89-year-old Corso would retire after Week 1 of the upcoming season, giving him a celebratory sendoff, but it did not name the location. There was some speculation the show could go to the Florida State-Alabama game, as Corso played at FSU in the 1950s alongside actor Burt Reynolds (and because Ohio State-Texas will be broadcast on Fox). 📍 Week 1: Columbus, OH We're kicking off College GameDay with a trip to Texas-Ohio State, as we celebrate Lee Corso's final show back where he first made headgear history! 🤩 — College GameDay (@CollegeGameDay) June 10, 2025 But the show will send Corso off where the headgear picks began. While Corso has been on the show since its inception in 1987, his first mascot pick came at Ohio State in 1996 for the Buckeyes' game against Penn State. Corso has made 430 headgear picks, from Buckeyes to animals to helmets to full-on costumes. He's correctly picked 66.5 percent of those choices, according to ESPN, including a perfect 11-0 in 1999. Brutus Buckeye has been the most popular pick, chosen 45 times, with Alabama just behind at 38. 'When it was our game, I was always hoping he didn't pick us,' Nick Saban said in April, 'because I knew the players were watching and I wanted reverse rat poison.'
