Victims from Miami's restaurant shooting encouraged to seek assistance from Victims Compensation Program
MIAMI, Okla. — Ottawa County District Attorney Doug Pewitt is offering individuals affected by a recent shooting at a Miami restaurant resources through the state's Crime Victims Compensation Program. 'People who may have been impacted by the May 31 active shooter situation at Mia Bella Italian Kitchen may be eligible for assistance through the Oklahoma Crime Victims Compensation Program,' said Pewitt. The state program covers unreimbursed expenses related to the crime, including medical, dental, and prescription costs, counseling and rehabilitation services, traditional healing, crime scene cleanup, work loss, services replacement, and mileage reimbursement for mental and medical appointments. The alleged shooter, Michael Anthony Cook III, 25, is charged in Ottawa County District Court in Miami with discharging a firearm into a dwelling, felony pointing a firearm, and two counts of shooting with intent to kill. He remains hospitalized after a shootout with Miami police, according to an arrest affidavit. (WJW) — A 6-year-old boy died last month in what the the Wabash County coroner has concluded was a 'tragic accidental death' involving a balloon. First responders were reportedly called to a home in Mount Carmel, Illinois, on May 29 where the boy, identified by family as Gunner Hyatt, was pronounced dead. 'Preliminary findings indicate that the cause of death is consistent with suffocation due to a Mylar-helium filled balloon,' the office said in the report. Wabash County Coroner Shaun Keepes said he wanted to make the public aware of the danger posed by large Mylar balloons, which are often the same size as children. 'While often seen as harmless decorations, these balloons can pose serious risks — particularly to young children — including the rare but devastating possibility of suffocation and/or helium toxicity,' the office said. Suspect arrested for Mother's Day fatal shooting in The Ville
Editor's note: Video is from a prior report. ST. LOUIS – Homicide detectives have arrested a man wanted for a fatal shooting on Mother's Day in north St. Louis. According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's probable cause statement, officers responded to a shooting call on May 11 around 7:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of Maffitt Avenue, in the city's The Ville neighborhood. Officers found the victim, Jorre Hadley, inside a vehicle. Hadley had been shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was 24. Close Thanks for signing up! Within days of the shooting, detectives identified Deandre Miller, 28, as the suspect in Hadley's death. Miller was arrested on Tuesday, June 3. On Wednesday, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office charged Miller with first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting arrest, first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, assault on a law enforcement animal, and two counts of armed criminal action.
