Jalen Brunson's sister trolls Pistons after Knicks win: ‘Left with a 40 piece and a W'

New York Post02-05-2025

There's no other way to put it: Jalen Brunson and the Knicks got the last laugh over the Pistons.
The pot began stirring a little extra with Malik Beasley trolling Mikal Bridges on X ahead of Game 6 — responding 'Minutes?' to a Knicks fan who posted that Bridges would '[go] for 44 Thursday.'
It continued with a paid billboard in Detroit reading, 'Brunson, you're a mother flopper.'

Well, after Brunson delivered the final dagger to the Pistons' season with his series-winning three-pointer in Game 6, the script has flipped with the trolling.
'Left with a 40 piece and a W,' Brunson's sister, Erica, posted to X in response to the viral billboard. 'Next time you pay to have our name up in Detroit think twice.'

As Knicks fans know better than anyone, Brunson thrives with this kind of target on his back — and Detroit certainly provided endless shots and ammunition.
Pistons center Jalen Duren was seen chirping Brunson for his foul-baiting antics earlier in the series, saying, 'You flopping motherf–ker' after Brunson drew a foul on him.

Not only that, but Pistons fans chanted 'F–k you Brunson' constantly throughout the three games in Detroit, and even had a deafening 'Flopper!' chant late in Game 6 just before Brunson ignited a run to come back and win the game for New York.
Brunson finished with 40 points, particularly thriving down the stretch in the fourth quarter to close out the inexperienced Pistons.

The NBA's Clutch Player of the Year did his job time and time again.
Detroit did not win a single game at Little Caesars Arena in the series.
While the Knicks escaped in six games, a different beast awaits with a matchup against the Boston Celtics sitting in Round 2.
Celtics fans also have a history of being quite rowdy, but they may want to be careful with poking the bear that is Brunson.

'Not everybody is marketable.' Purdue coach Matt Painter welcomes 'balance' House settlement brings

WEST LAFAYETTE — The financial allotment for college athletes went from one extreme (legally nonexistent) to another when the NCAA instituted name, image, and likeness (NIL), allowing student-athletes to capitalize on their marketability. The rich, essentially, got richer. On Friday, a nearly half decade battle through the court system concluded with the House vs. NCAA settlement which will allow schools to pay their athletes directly. Purdue athletic director Mike Bobinski stated previously Purdue would be a full participant up to the cap limit, estimated at $20.5 million. After Purdue basketball had its first summer practice on Monday, coach Matt Painter, who currently serves as third vice president on the National Association of Basketball Coaches board of directors, was asked if college basketball got better based on the ruling. "Some competitive balance is all we really want," Painter said. "It wasn't name, image and likeness before. This gives you more of a grasp of having a core amount of money to pay these guys, which is a lot less than the money that's going on right now. And then, anything on top of it is real name, image and likeness." The idea behind name, image, and likeness was for college athletes to capitalize on their notoriety via avenues such as autograph signings, hosting sports camps, or appearing in advertisements, for example. Painter mentioned specifically from his own program since NIL went into effect the names of two-time National Player of the Year Zach Edey, selected ninth overall in last year's NBA draft, and Braden Smith, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year and Bob Cousy Award winner for the nation's top point guard, as marketable athletes who fit the supposed NIL idea. Insider: Newcomers out, or limited, for first Purdue basketball practice: 3 things we learned "When everybody gets money, not everybody in Major League Baseball gets money in name, image and likeness and they're in the big show," Painter said. "If you watch a baseball game and there's 52 guys on two rosters, tell me how many guys are on those commercials. Two? Three? Four? Five? Not very many. That's the market. Not everybody is marketable that plays college basketball and gets paid. ... "There's a lot of things that haven't been fair across the board, so hopefully this equals things out a little bit."

NBA trade rumors: The latest on the Knicks coaching search, Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo

Sure, the NBA Finals are in full swing, but fans of the 28 other NBA teams have one thing on their minds: the offseason. Known for big trades and drama, the NBA offseason has found ways to dominate the sports news cycle in times when basketball should be the last thing on anyone's mind. This offseason promises to be similar. Future Hall of Famers like Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo are expected to be available on the trade market, and one of the league's premier franchises — the New York Knicks — are searching for a new coach. Advertisement Where do all those stories stand with the Finals underway? Yahoo Sports has you covered with all the biggest NBA rumors below. Knicks, Jason Kidd still in limbo The Knicks may have narrowed down their coaching search to their top candidate, but there's a problem: He's already taken. The Knicks are reportedly interested in Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd, but New York has yet to ask the Mavericks for permission to talk to the coach. The Knicks like the idea for a few reasons, per Marc Stein. The franchise is familiar with Kidd after he spent the final year of his playing career with the Knicks. The team also believes Kidd could handle the media pressure and spotlight that comes with being in New York. Kidd also has familiarity with Knicks star Jalen Brunson. Advertisement But in order to hire Kidd, the team needs to formally ask the Mavericks to speak with the coach. It's unclear whether the Knicks will do that. Some in the Mavericks' organization believe the Knicks will not ask the team for permission to speak to Kidd, per Stein. It's possible that's because the Knicks believe they will get shut down by the Mavericks, forcing them to look elsewhere for a new head coach. The team finds itself in a strange spot after the surprising firing of Tom Thibodeau last week. Thibodeau posted a .565 winning percentage in five seasons with the Knicks and just took the team to the Eastern Conference finals. Given the strong personalities in the Knicks' front office, the team could have multiple ideas on how to replace Thibodeau, per Stein, so losing out on Kidd might not be a huge barrier for the franchise. Kevin Durant to the Knicks? The Knicks could have an easy time bringing in a new coach, especially if the club acquires Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. The Suns are expected to deal Durant after the team struggled despite bringing in elite talent last offseason. Advertisement While a number of teams — including the Houston Rockets, Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs — have been mentioned as suitors for Durant, the Knicks continue to be one of the teams consistently mentioned in rumors for the superstar. ESPN's Shams Charania mentioned New York as a suitor for Durant in April, and his colleague, ESPN's Brian Windhorst, brought up that possibility Tuesday. The Suns may have struggled last season, but it wasn't due to Durant. The 36-year-old showed little sign of decline, averaging 26.6 points and six rebounds over 62 games in Phoenix. That should make Durant a popular trade target for a number of teams. It certainly sounds like the Knicks want to remain in that mix. Giannis Antetokounmpo could stay put in Milwaukee. (Photo by) (Justin Casterline via Getty Images) Giannis Antetokounmpo won't be traded? There is apparently no trade market for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo right now, per Windhorst. Advertisement Antetokounmpo has not asked the team for a trade, and the Bucks reportedly aren't looking to deal their star. Given how quickly the NBA offseason shifts, that could change. The Bucks have plenty of incentive to deal their superstar now. Milwaukee was once again eliminated early in the playoffs, and the Bucks are in rough shape following Damian Lillard's injury and the team's lack of control over its future first-round picks. Antetokounmpo should bring in quite the haul if he gets dealt. The 30-year-old averaged 30.4 points and 11.9 rebounds for Milwaukee last season, and is under contract through the 2027-28 NBA season. Expect a lot of NBA offseason action soon While rumors are quiet at the moment, things could pick up relatively soon. Windhorst teased the NBA offseason could move faster than normal during an appearance on "First Take" on Tuesday. Advertisement Windhorst mentioned Charania has "cleared his calendar" ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft, which will take place June 25. Windhorst teased, "You're gonna get your action very soon." That action should come once the NBA Finals conclude. If the series goes a full seven games, that would happen June 22, just days before the NBA Draft. It could make for a hectic draft season.

‘You couldn't pay us enough': Stephen A. Smith relays Rockets' response to Ime Udoka rumor

'You couldn't pay us enough': Stephen A. Smith relays Rockets' response to Ime Udoka rumor Stephen A. Smith on potential Rockets-Knicks talks: 'Ime Udoka ain't going anywhere, I got that text message. 'You don't have enough,' they said.' The New York Knicks reportedly have interest in hiring Rockets head coach Ime Udoka, but Udoka remains under contract with Houston for multiple future seasons. Coming off a season with the NBA's fourth-best record and a young and improving roster, the Rockets like the course they're on. Moreover, Udoka finished third in 2024-25 NBA Coach of the Year voting. So, there's not much incentive for Houston — even if offered lucrative compensation — to consider letting Udoka out of his contract to speak with the Knicks. Per ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith, who happens to be a longtime Knicks fan, that's the message he's seemingly heard from Houston. On Tuesday's First Take, Smith said: Ime Udoka is one of the best coaches in the NBA. This brother is something better. When Jay Williams brought up about the New York Knicks reaching out to Houston, I got a text. 'You don't have enough,' they said. 'You couldn't pay us enough.' Ime Udoka ain't going anywhere, I got that text message, he's not going anywhere. And damn right, they should hold onto him for dear life. Smith's complete comments on Udoka and the Rockets can be viewed below. In recent days, the Knicks have seemingly shifted their focus to Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, who does appear to have some level of interest in the New York vacancy. It is possible that New York's interest could be leveraged by Udoka and his representation in upcoming negotiations with the Rockets, who are likely planning to give him a contract extension by the 2026 offseason at the latest (his current deal will end after the 2026-27 season). Stay tuned! More: Reports: With sudden coaching vacancy, Knicks intrigued by Houston's Ime Udoka
